Where do you rate Vayne on your list of best Final Fantasy villains? Do you rate him pretty high, low, or somewhere in-between?

I enjoyed him both as a character and a villain and I'd rate him...

1.) Sorceress Edea
2.) Lord Vayne
3.) Sephiroth
4.) Seymour
5.) Kuja

Pretty smurfing high.

Only included the villains out of the games I replayed this year.

Discuss.

I don't rate him as villian. He wanted better future for mankind, one that they can actually create themselves and not be puppet strings of those gods. I hated defeating him because I agreed with his philosophy, I feel like I was the ultimate villian of the game.

This game has a very gray morality. You're fighting one side against another, one group of kingdoms vs an empire. If you lose, the world goes to war. If you don't, war can be prevented. It isn't so much about the sides' philosophies, but about preventing war.

IMO, this one has the most "realistic" storyline of any FF. You're not fighting some ultimate evil, but you're taking a side in a battle between two morally questionable sides.

I'm afraid I don't see the gray area as much as you guys do. From the beginning it seemed very obvious to me that the Empire were meant to be the bad guys. Stop the Empire. A couple of them weren't complete dicks, but the rest of them could hang for all I care. I do have a "love to hate" relationship with Vayne, though. That's why I rate him so highly.

How do you rate him as an antagonist, then? Because you don't have to be a villain to be an antagonist and vice versa.

Towards the top, not quite as bomabstic and memorable as say... Golbez or Kefka but certainly more entertaining to watch than Sephiroth or the Sorceress Ultimecia.

I still stand by my conspiracy theory that he was meant to be a more tragic figure in the script, especially since I still believe his actions were meant to always help his brother Larsa, but got re-written as a catty world conqueror at the end due to the writer's not really knowing how to finish his character arc.

I rank him at the lowest because I don't even know his motives were. He was definitely one of the least memorable villains in the series right up with Cloud of Darkness.

not very high
i mean he pretty much just hangs out for most of the game
tbh if they didnt' want to kill him i'd reckon he'd wanna chill w the main party and have some colas

Vayne's motivations are moral but for them to reach fruition requires the success of The Empire as the well. He seeks to emancipate humanity while commanding a force that shackles them. A rather gray villain, but a villain nonetheless.
