The Mystic Knights (or any of those names you mentioned) in FFV technically weren't a magic class. They were more of a speed class because their speed bonus was high & their magic bonus was low. Then Square just gave their abilities to warriors anyway.

Red Mages because they are in good in everything.
I never really like the red mages all that much. Although they could dabble in white and black magic and wield a weapon I preferred full white / black mage as they could excel where the red mages couldn't.

I'm going for black mages as it makes it easier when there are monsters with weaknesses to certain elements. Makes you feel powerful dealing such large amounts of damage so early on :D

I always find White Wind and Mighty Guard useful so probably blue. Though I wished I was a Time Mage.

Also Geomancers are pretty swish.

For me it is only really a competition between Blue and Red. All the other non-sword mages blow in comparison.

I went Red because they appear in more games, and don't require as much foreknowledge of the game.

I like the idea of green magic, as Status effects are always the best magic.

Considering how many times you say "Grrr I've been blinded, how annoying". No one uses them for the enemies though.

White is still my favorite, but green is the best.

My vote goes to Blue Mages. It may take a bit to get them rolling, but they always have a great selection of spells once they get started and cover every role the other mages do. Well, except physical combat, which the Red Mage generally seems better at.
