So Square Enix have announced the first expansion to FFXIV, titled Heavensward, that is due to launch in Spring 2015.

Details are still coming in via live blogsand attendees, but Ishgard, a previously un-enterable city-state north of Eorzea’s wintery Coerthas, will be at least one of the expansion’s settings. The story will focus on the Dragonsong War, a thousand-year conflict between Ishgard and its neighboring dragons. The level cap will increase from 50 to 60. A new race will be added, with both male and female genders, alongside multiple new jobs.

The expansion's new zones will include the Dravanian Forelands and the Dravanian Forest. Other new zones including floating landmasses accessible beyond the sea of clouds. A multitude of dungeons will also debut.

More information about the expansion, including its new jobs, will revealed throughout the weekend and at other Fan Festivals later this year.

I wish you could still do a free trial on ps3. I've never played an mmo but i'm interested by this one.

You can buy the PS3 version for dirt cheap now, and it comes with a 30 day free trial. I'd suggest you try it if you get a chance. FFXIV has been my first MMO as well, I've only subbed twice since ARR launched but when I play it I really enjoy it. Definitely going to try and get in to it more! Currently on route to unlocking Dragoon.

When I first started playing I started off as a Marauder, which was a tank. As a newbie to MMO I didn't understand all the mechanics of what a tank should be, keeping hate from monsters etc. Found myself running around dungeons and such not knowing what to do! But now I've switched to Lancer which is a DPS (damage dealer) role I feel much more comfortable on the battlefield.

That's the good thing about this game: you can be whatever class you want to be at any time. I've barely scratched the surface content wise. And if you don't want to commit just sub for a month, then come back to it later and continue from where you left off.

No worries :)

I'm surprised this isn't garnering more attention as I believe quite a few people here at EoFF play FFXIV.

A 30 day free trial you say....hmmm now im very interested. I see it's only 24 bucks at gamestop but it doesnt say anything about the 30 day trial you speak of. Are you sure about this? And what are you playing it on?

When you register an account you get the 30 day free trial, it's not for 'buying the game' really it's for playing :)

Yeah, like Lockharted says you automatically get 30 days to play once you start playing.

I'm on PS3 at the moment. I'll upgrade to PS4 when I can (I have one) but as I bought it for the family it's in the front room, so I get more time to play it on the PS3 in my room. There can be a bit of lag and slowdown at times, whether that's the inferior console version or my internet I don't know, but it's not all the time.

It'll take you a while to get used to the UI with PS3 controller, though! And chat is harder without a keyboard but I *think* the game supports keyboard and mouse. The controller is mapped great for battles, though. You can set abilities to each of the face and directional buttons and access them by either holding L2 or R2. Can get a bit hectic when there's tons of enemies coming at you in a dungeon though, but you can cycle through enemies by pressing left or right on the direction pad.

Yes, the PS3/4 does support keyboard and mouse.

^ Thanks for clearing that up :)

One thing to mention Hannibal is that I've heard that the PS3 version doesn't handle things so well in later content. Things not loading properly etc. So far I can't say I've ran in to any issues though (except sometimes takes a while for NPC's to load while at an inn or somewhere).

Can you have multiple linkshells? As I'm already in one. But would be good to join another as well. As for free companies I'm not really sure how they work.

You can have up to eight linkshells, but only one Free Company.

To switch between Linkshells, you can type /l1 or /l2 and press enter to permanently change which Linkshell all your messages will go to, or you can type /l1 hi or /l2 hi and press enter to send a message to a linkshell without changing which linkshell your default chat is going to.

Protip: Make your linkshells slightly different colours so you don't get confused, and get used to typing mt because you put something into the wrong Linkshell.

I have eight linkshells, I wish I could have more to be honest! I keep two chat windows visible on my screen...

1) My main chatter window which has all chat from /say, /yell, /shout, /party, /tell, /l1, /l2, /l3, /l4, /l5, /l6, /l7, /l8, /alliance and /fc.
2) My 'general' window which has chat from only /l1, /fc, /party, /tell along with things like battle/crafting/system messages. That way I can keep track of all the chat going on in one window and focus on the linkshell most important to me in my general window.

Hope that makes sense. xD Obviously everyone will set up their chat windows in different ways.

I play on PS3 so it's slightly different for me. Gotta press select to choose the little chat bubble to change things.

Now another n00b question: I know that party is for party chat, say is for proximity chat...but what's yell / shout mean?

(Edit: sorry for going off topic here!)

/shout covers the entire map, /yell covers the nearby area of your map. :)
