Unless you have been living under a rock, or alternatively simply do not have Dat Matt on Facebook, you may be mildly aware that we have undergone a massive watch of all the Disney Animated Classics (and their questionable sequels) over the course of the past 12 months. It has been a long trip, but we have finally come to the end of it.

Fairly early on, we decided to keep track of what we would consider to be our “favourites”, ranking them numerically. We could see how our tastes differed, and also have numbers associated with them making it easy for us to compare. Also numbered lists are cool.

With our list of 100 movies ranked, we averaged them out and found our combined Top 10, which you, lucky Eyes on Final Fantasy forum goers, will get to find out about right here!

Are you ready for some ~*~magic~*~? Because here we go!

http://i1280.photobucket.com/albums/a498/Sheetlebug/Disney%20Thing/DisneyHeader_zps94f7c447.jpg

Note: There are actually 13 movies because a number of them had the same average score and after some mild discussion over what would go higher, we decided to not bother trying to do that anymore and instead have some movies share a place. We will also post our individual lists at some point, so you can decide who the most objectively correct Disney media consumer is. Nonetheless, I do hope you enjoy our list, and our shoddily put together header image.

We will slowly be releasing out the top 10 because hype, probably one film a day. Feel free to make predictions on the contents of the list before it is made. I want to see your tears when *INSERT DISNEY MOVIE HERE* is not on the list.

#1 will be a tie for Up, Wreck-It-Ralph and Lilo & Stitch.

I actually really enjoyed the apparently shoddy header image.

It's a good thing you specified animated because it's obvious Mary Poppins is the greatest ever Disney movie.

Dat Matt

We did watch Cherry Bobbins, but due to reasons no live action movies are on the list. So Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End is not #1

PS - Shauna made the header. I would have just used this if I were in charge.

To be fair, *INSERT DISNEY MOVIE HERE* was a tad overrated. The characters were pretty bland and when you hire Phil Collins to do the music... it never stood a chance.

Guessing by the header image that we're not counting Pixar?

Pixar is included, because... why not.

The header is shoddy because I stole a stock image from the Internet and put word art on it. xD

10.
Monsters, Inc. (2001)
Matt ranked it at 16. Shauna ranked it at 11.
OVERALL SCORE: 13.5

Matt: Monsters, Inc is one of those movies that you can just watch constantly on repeat. Because the world is filled with monsters rather than people living day to day lives they make the mundane and ordinary situation of living entertaining.

This movie reached #16 for me because of how convincing the movie is. Starting off with the main characters, the friendship between Mike and Sully is one of the most believable love stories in a Disney movie. You can see they are best friends, and this is portrayed really well throughout the movie they fight, they laugh, they love. It's all very believable because of the little interactions which are missing from most other movies. Sully also carries this over to Boo with the parental desire to protect her and get her home. It's an angle that isn't really explored with animated movies.

One of the things I really like this movie for is the visuals. It was the first movie I remember that was so large scale. Take the door warehouse room near the end of the movie. That place is huge and for early 2000 nothing like that had been done before. You can also tell even the background characters needed a lot of design compared to other Disney movies as every monster is unique. It was unique for the time, and is easily on par with movies released to this day.

The main reason I like this movie is because it flips the idea that monsters are bad guys. With Boo entering the monster world and scaring everyone so much that the city essentially goes into lock down it's interesting to see the contrast. Also she's adorable, which is another big factor.

http://33.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m22d1xpKkN1qctfszo1_500.gif

Shauna: I still remember when Monsters, Inc first hit cinemas. I remember seeing the trailer and thinking it was a pretty cool concept, and I remember my Dad talking about he always comes up with stories that flip the traditional tales, quoting his improv Little Red Riding Hood where the wolf was the misunderstood good guy. We saw it as soon as we could at the cinema, and I loved it. It was one of the very first DVDs we owned, and I had solidly done and seen everything on that 2-disc special edition on more than one occasion. Suffice to say, when I was younger I was a pretty massive fan.

When it came to watching all the Disney/Pixar movies, it’s the ones that I remember responding to positively to such a degree that I worried about the most. What if it didn’t hit the heights that I remember it having? What if I not only did not love it as much, but I found something that I simply could not agree with?

Fortunately for my childhood, I still found it to hold up really well. Of course, some nostalgia affected my feelings on the matter, but really it’s just an excellently put together movie. The story is solid, and the characters are believable and loveable. They managed to make a small child who doesn’t actually use any real words not the most annoying thing to exist, which is quite a feat. The villains are threatening, with well played out motivations. Although, that all being said, Randall is just a petty jerk who needs to get over himself. I love the unique and interesting designs for all the monsters too, there are no two that look the same which gives Monstropolis a varied and vibrant feel.

The laughs still get me every time, and I will always love the “Put That Thing Back Where It Came From” skit during the credits. I suppose the most important thing though, is the emotional impact it leaves, which has come to be expected from Pixar in particular. It doesn’t have a massive emotional gut punch, but I still get teary when Sully has to say goodbye, and subsequently his smiling face on the final scene before the credits… Makes me reach for the tissues every time.

So yes, a solid film that I admittedly don’t love as much as I did when I first encountered it, but it will likely stay with me as one of my all-time favourite Disney Pixar movies, and that old DVD will definitely get plenty more action in the years to come.

Yeah, we watched the animation hybrid movies but decided not to include them in our list because it opened a door to a whole bunch of other films being included in our list. Would Tron count? The Muppets? Causes too many issues - just stick to the animated ones and be done with it.

As you can see, too much thought was put into this.

Scotty_ffgamer
11-09-2014, 08:00 PM
Oh, you put in just the right amount of thought, haha. I'd love to see a top ten live action list thing someday. I'm not as familiar with those really.

Shauna
11-09-2014, 08:12 PM
I would need to research that, because I am unsure of where the boundaries would go for what I'd include or not! After a brief look, there are too many. Erk, National Treasure... Beverly Hills Chihuahua... I don't think we'll be undertaking that.

Oh, another honourable mention would go to The Nightmare Before Christmas. It was high up for both of us, but it was a tricky one to place with technicalities all over the shop. xD So we decided to leave it to give us a nice round 100 films.

Anyway. Monsters Inc is pretty good.

9.
The Rescuers (1977)
Matt ranked it at 24. Shauna ranked it at 1.
OVERALL SCORE: 12.5

Matt: So in terms of my personal Disney List, this is the lowest down of all of the entries you will see on the top 10 ranking at #24/100. It made the cut because someone put it at number one. However it's still a good movie regardless of Shauna's enduring nostalgia for the flick.

I don't have much to say about this movie except that it's a good little adventure romp that features two little mice, an orphan girl and Disney's Most Diabolical villain. Turn into a Genie to rule the universe? Na. Kill your brother to usurp the throne? Don't wanna hear it. Tell an orphan girl that no one will ever love her? Now you've crossed the line! I mean look at this witch

http://i.imgur.com/8G2YJXE.jpg

The Rescuers is just a wee charming movie in that period where Disney was kind of rubbish.

Shauna: Admittedly, the reason this even made it on to any sort of Top 10 list is because of my nostalgia and the permanent childhood affection I hold for this movie. Yes, the original is my personal favourite Disney movie, not the supposedly superior sequel (which, just for the record, I also thoroughly enjoyed). This was that one movie for me – the one that when it was your turn to pick what movie to watch, you always picked it no matter what. I watched the video so much that I wore it out, and then cried until my Dad did some DIY on it at the expense of another VHS.

Unlike Monsters, Inc., I’m not sure that I would ever be concerned that I’d wake up one day and find that I suddenly don’t connect with The Rescuers. Nothing will ever make me stop loving those little mice and their adventures in being the littlest heroes.

Honestly, I’ve been sitting here a while trying to properly articulate why I love this movie as much as I do, and I am really struggling. When writing things like this, you try to justify why you enjoy something and that’s often a difficult thing to do. But in this situation? I will admit that many other Disney movies do what this one does, and often do it so much better, yet I will put this on top every time.

I just love this movie for being what it is.

I love the characters, Bernard and Bianca are wonderful together as partners. I love Rufus the cat. I love Orville, that stupid albatross. Heck, even Penny is pretty alright in my books. Special mention goes to Evinrude the dragonfly, who I have always considered to be the most adorable guy with his little turtleneck. The villains are something special here too – Madame Medusa has pet alligators! What is up with that? She is quite possibly the most evil villain out there too – who tells a poor little orphan girl that she is too ugly for anyone to ever love and adopt her, and then puts that her in a death trap after stealing her Teddy? Madame Medusa, that’s who. Also Mr Snoops, I guess. Forget murdering people, hurting a kid’s feelings is way worse. I love the little Rescue Aid Society song they sing. I love the little mouse community the mice have all built – Bernard using the comb as ladders has always blown me away. I love the entire ridiculous climactic ending in the swamp, with all the little critters helping out and drinking their moonshine, and Madame Medusa water-skiing on her alligators…

I could probably go on, so I’ll stop here. It is definitely not the prettiest film, nor is it the greatest on any technical level by any stretch of the imagination. But damn, I just can’t get enough of it.

9.
The Lion King (1994)
Matt ranked it at 10. Shauna ranked it at 15.
OVERALL SCORE: 12.5

Matt: A joint number 9 with the rescuers, The Lion King is the first one on this list to make my personal top 10. The Lion King is a special movie to me as it is the very first movie I recall seeing at the cinema at the age of 4. This was my first Disney Movie. The Lion King is pretty much the whole package. Slap bang in the middle of Renaissance Disney they knew what they were doing to make a good movie.

I'll start with Music. Renaissance Disney was known for its musical score and by golly is this one good. “I Can't Wait to be King”, “Hakuna Matata”, “Can you Feel the Love Tonight”, “Be Prepared” my lord does this movie have amazing songs. They are all catchy in their own way and all tell their own story unlike more recent Disney Movies (I'm looking at you Chicken Little). Each song feels necessary and adds that extra level of depth to the story. Based on my top 10, this is the highest ranking “Musical” movie, meaning to me that this musical soundtrack is the pinnacle of Disney.

The Characters are next. Every character is unique and feels necessary to the story. Simba is a brilliant protagonist in that tries to run from his problems but he has the bravery to stand up to them (eventually). Scar is an amazing villain being equally slimy and intimidating, as well as having Disney's best villain Song. Timon and Pumba although designed for comic relief actually have a role in the movie outside of a few laughs. Nala is the inspiration needed to having Simba return to Pride Rock. Mufasa as Simba's idol as well as his biggest regret. Zazu is the loveable Servant, Rafiki the Eccentric Sage, the Hyenas all play a necessary role in this movie and feel like the movie would be lessened without them.

Finally, the story. The story speaks to me unlike a lot of the other Renaissance Disney movies like The Little Mermaid. The Little Mermaid follows the same sort of story in that Ariel and Simba both want to run away. The difference is that Ariel is looking for something while Simba is looking to run away from everything. It's more empathetic than other stories. It's especially touching when Simba realises that he can't run from his problems anymore and it's a good moral to be teaching. Running can only get you so far. Sooner or later you need to face your problems. Also, Regicide? What a hell of a story to tell to the kids.

http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m5topv3ADJ1r1ibsxo2_500.gif

The Lion King is just an all-round outstanding movie.

Shauna: This movie is not high up enough on the list, right guys? Down with us!

I think The Lion King is a wonderful piece of film. It is definitely heralded as one of the Disney greats for a reason. This wasn’t one of the movies I had when I was younger, but I was exposed to it enough growing up – a lot of my cousins watched and rewatched this movie, which I was pretty okay with. Also, it had a frickin’ kick ass video game to go along with it! Again, not something I owned, but I played it at Electronics Boutique and PC World when we’d go there for… reasons. But yes, because of my limited exposure to this one growing up, I don’t have a lot to say in my old lady reminiscing portion of the review.

What can I say about The Lion King that hasn’t already been said a million times over? It is a brilliant piece of cinema, and it deserves every praise given to it. I can think of little this movie does wrong. Except rip off some old movie literally nobody cares about and take the plot straight from some ancient play. How unoriginal.

When I think of The Lion King, my mind definitely goes straight to the soundtrack. Which is filled to the brim with ridiculously catchy tunes. Be Prepared is a delightfully chilling villain song, one of the best in my opinion; and the Circle of Life? These days it makes me tear up something chronic, and I am not sure why. Other than the sheer beauty and majesty of the song, of course. But a solid soundtrack is nothing without a stellar cast to back it up. Lucky, I think The Lion King nailed it in that respect too.

I have always had a soft spot for Zazu – don’t know whether that’s just Rowan Atkinson, or whether I just have a thing for stick-in-the-muds. Who knows? Timon and Pumba were alright with me too. A lot of films have the annoying comic relief sidekicks who do nothing except do and say stupid things, but The Lion King balanced it nicely so that they were more than just forgettable caricatures and had a decent impact on the story. And the villain? Scar has the perfect balance of menacing and vague campiness that makes him a great villain, and you can’t go wrong with some Jeremy Irons, that is for certain.

It is a beautiful movie too, visually. It helps with all the emotional scenes to have some pretty backdrops. The emotional scenes can be pretty intense too. I’ve already mentioned how the opening scene gets me with all the music, but there are others! Simba (somehow) calling the rains back to Pride Rock, and taking his place as the king? Wonderful. Really, it is all the more beautiful to watch brave and wise Mufasa fall. Who didn’t tear up when Simba was nuzzling in to Mufasa in the gorge asking him to wake up?

That was me. I didn’t. Whoops.

8.
Beauty and the Beast (1991)
Matt ranked it at 22. Shauna ranked it at 2.
OVERALL SCORE: 12

Matt: So, this movie is another one of those movies that didn't make my top 20, but is on our joint top 10 because Shauna loves some movies. This places at #22 for me. The movie itself is pretty good, but I don't have much to comment on about it.

Beauty and the Beast for me isn't about the romance between Belle and The Beast. It's not about the morale that beauty is only skin deep, it's not even about the curse turning all the castle staff into cutlery and furniture. It's all about Gaston. Gaston is probably my favourite Disney villain. He is an arrogant jock that is used to getting his way all the time. The whole town loves him, and he's used to getting his way all the time. That why he wants to marry Belle over any of the bar wenches he could easily bang whenever, because he wants the pretty girl who isn't smitten with him at first sight simply because she isn't smitten with him at first sight.

You also totally know in most stories, Gaston is the good guy. Storming the Castle of a monster to save a girl is the common trope for stories like this. It's refreshing to see it reversed.

Shauna: When I was younger I watched a fair bit of Disney, believe it or not. Although, back then following The Rescuers as my favourite movie was The Little Mermaid. Not so much these days, since it appears that Beauty and the Beast currently sits in my #2. Which in a weird sort of way makes it my favourite Disney movie, as my #1 is there because of blind nostalgia and an inability to let go of my childhood or something. Thinking back on it though, it makes sense for this to be the case. The first Disney DVD I really wanted to own was Beauty and the Beast, and I totally bid on “legit” copies of it on eBay back in the day. My Dad bought me the special 2-disc/format edition the year it was re-released, so all was right in the end. This was the one that started my collection, and it’s probably the one I’ll go back and watch before the rest.

Beauty and the Beast is about a brunette who likes reading… well, that’s enough for me to have someone to relate to! Particularly as a bookish child. When do you ever see bookworms getting anything good? I don’t think in the media I consumed as a child there was much, and to have Belle being portrayed in a positive light only made it better. Okay fine, the townsfolk thought she was a bit weird for reading and generally not being dumb, but who cares what others think? She certainly didn’t. A little bit of a role-model to me, I think – not a bad choice though. She’s kind, caring, unselfish in her acts and pretty smart to boot. Not too bad a combo. Anyway, enough gushing about how Belle is the greatest ever, there are other things I enjoy about Beauty and the Beast. Promise.

The rest of the characters are excellently put together too. Beast has a well-rounded character arc, starting off as an angry evil guy and becoming less so as the movie goes on. Redemption! Gaston is possibly one of my favourite villains – he is just so ridiculous, but damn does he become menacing as the plot progresses. Also his Mob Song quotes Macbeth, can’t go wrong there. The side characters are all a lot of fun, and they don’t feel like pointless padding despite there being quite a few of them. Lumiere and Cogsworth have a wonderful banterous relationship, and Mrs Potts is the caring motherly (grandmother? What age is she?!) type that we all need in our lives. All in all, a fantastic cast of characters.

I think the last thing I’ll talk about here is the whole host of excellent musical numbers that accompanied the movie. From Belle’s opening number to Be Our Guest, they’re all damned catchy and wonderfully put together. And really? No one’s as good at expectorating as Gaston. If they say it in a song, you know it’s true. The stage show is also pretty rad, I thoroughly enjoyed myself when I saw it, and it was great to hear all the classic songs performed live in a theatre.

It is a really gorgeous movie, and the fact that we watched it on Blu-ray in all its high definition only made it more beautiful! It’s the only Blu-ray I own, so I had to try that old thing out as soon as I got the chance. And by damn, it only made me want to have my own giant library with books from the floor to the ceiling, except this time in glorious HD.

So yes, Beauty and the Beast is brilliant. Am I missing anything from my commentary? Oh, right. Something something Stockholm syndrome, something something bestiality. Happy?

7.
Bolt (2008)
Matt ranked it at 2. Shauna ranked it at 21.
OVERALL SCORE: 11.5

Matt: When it came to my number one spot, Toy Story held the top spot for a long time. Enduring the Trials of Renaissance Disney, beating off all the terrible Disney sequels. Some rivals attempted to to take the #1 such as The Goofy Movie and Atlantis the Lost Empire. It remained unbudging at #1. That is, until Bolt.

https://38.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m74lzeZ3WE1rxgdkqo1_500.gif

Bolt is likely so high on my list for one main reason. It's about a dog. I love dogs. Dogs are the coolest animal ever and I would totally live on a farm surrounded by dogs if I had the finances to support it. I always grew up with dogs rather than cats due to allergies, so until my university days I always had a dog friend. As such I can see the little quirks this movie has to offer. Bolt being distracted by the carrot toy when he is trying to remain attentive in the watch for the Green Eyed Man, or when he does the “dog face” at the caravan park. I can see all the attributes I love about dogs in this movie.

https://33.media.tumblr.com/d80bdaf1803d80125838151755e88ab5/tumblr_n6avbnRPLQ1s19bh8o3_500.gif

Now to actually describing why I like this movie. Bolt is just one of those movies that I feel works start to finish. The story of a dog that gets adopted by a little girl, they make it into show business and he lives his life as a dog with super powers based on regular actives a dog would perform like walking or barking. Ratings are bad, so they have Penny kidnapped and end the episode on a cliff-hanger. Bolt is distressed, escapes and goes on the search to find her. To me this mirrors what a dog would probably do. Go crazy until their person is returned safe. Penny doesn't have much of a role in this movie except being a teenage star who can't live her own life, which makes it funny they hired Miley Cyrus to voice Penny. There is a connect there between the two as you can assume Miley also didn't get her way all the time in her earlier career.

After escaping, Bolt runs into Mittens. The straight man in this comedy sketch. Mittens is genius. She's street smart and always finds ways to poke fun of Bolt underneath the radar. She's also the main focus for the progression of this movies' plot, being the navigator for the journey and the brains behind most of the operations. That is of course unless Bolt attempts to do something crazy like jumping on a train. Mittens is a great character as she's adapted to her situation of being abandoned which is reflected in her character. She doesn't trust humans so is reluctant to help Bolt find Penny when they do make it to L.A.

Comic relief is also a thing that is more present in movies than before. Bolt has one too in the form of Rhino, a hamster. It's probably one of the better examples of the character archetype along with Timon and Pumba. He's around for a laugh or two, but he is also integral to the plot. He's not just around to check a box, he's here to kick ass! Rhino is one of a small pool of main characters in this movie, but he doesn't receive any character development. He doesn't need it. He's exactly where he needs to be at the beginning of the movie and remains there at the end of the movie.

Before getting onto Bolt himself, I want to talk about the story. Bolt has so many amazing moments for me. The Caravan Park scene for example where Bolt realises he's hungry and acts like a normal dog and begs for food is charming, and hilarious when they tell Mittens to bugger off because she's a cat. When they escape the pound and they end up blowing the place up is the most ridiculous thing Disney have put onto film. The Road Trip Scene where they travel from place to place and Bolt's scar fades to symbolise his past life fading away is very touching and shows him becoming more dog.

http://25.media.tumblr.com/72b9a4a7b47170f5f2a70c55be27184c/tumblr_mx60g4TLY51qgwqw9o1_500.gif

Finally, Bolt. Bolt is one of the best characters I've ever seen Disney put out. Most of the Disney characters have an incentive to progress the plot and put themselves in danger for love, for example, Aladdin. What they miss is this love from the get go. They focus on the development of this relationship during the story and then use this as the incentive to fight the bad guy at the end to live happily ever after. In Bolt they have this from the very start. Bolt loves Penny, Penny is in trouble and he needs to save her. No big end movie set piece required for that aspect of urgency and danger he just does it. How he progresses through the movie from super serious super-dog to just regular dog feels natural. He's so stuck up and serious for most of the movie it's easy for Mittens to make fun of him in ridiculous manner such as using Styrofoam to subdue him. He changes all this and then is 100% dog when he returns to L.A and finds his trailer.

Then that scene where he sees Penny with another dog, and then the heartbreak sets in and then there is a fire and Bolt runs in recklessly without care for his own safety as Penny is in danger and then they use all of Bolts superhero moves to navigate the fire and then they can't get out and then he uses the Super Bark to call for help through the vent and then I cried and then everything is okay and they live happy ever after.

Bolt is a rare movie for me. A lot of the Disney movies on our list are good movies. They are enjoyable watches and I can recommend that people check them out. What Bolt does differently is simple. This movie makes me happy in the right ways. There is a feeling of joy and sadness that comes through in this movie, something that only my #1 “Wreck it Ralph” can also provide. That's why it's my #2.

Shauna: In what is the complete opposite situation from Beauty and the Beast, we have Bolt, a movie that Matt loved more than many things, and that I think is entertaining and cute, but not enough to hold a candle to a lot of what I consider to be much better movies.

But here it is and I have to say some nice things about it, of which I have plenty.

It is a very charming movie, and you can’t help but fall in love a little bit with the main three characters. Even Rhino, who in every right should have been more irritating and obnoxious than he ends up being, endeared himself to me a fair bit. I don’t care that much about the human characters, though. But that’s okay, it’s not about the little girl and her terrible, yet hilarious, agent. It’s about a dog and a cat on a roadtrip movie as they learn to have fun and all that sort of thing.

Perfectly fine and enjoyable movie.

Mittens is definitely my favourite character though. She’s just so savvy and totally knows how to deal with the incompetence she has around her, despite her being essentially crippled. An inspiration to us all, indeed.

I wish I could say more about the eponymous character, but he was just a dog learning to be… well, a traditional dog. Which isn’t a complaint, by any means! I thoroughly enjoyed their silly animal escapades, their adventures in the trailer park are great and are a highlight of the movie.

Maybe I can’t connect so much with this movie as I’ve never actually had a dog. Or any other pet for that matter. As emotional as some of the scenes are, and even I teared up a little bit at the climax, I’m sure they’d hit me even harder if I knew the feelings of having a pet.

I may never love this movie as much as Matt does, but all in all I like it. This is a good little movie with loveable characters, and I would recommend if you never gave it a watch.

12-02-2014, 02:46 AM
The odd thing I found out about Bolt is that I thought the dog was quite relatable. Being born after the mid 80's in the middle class, I was taught the "You are special, you can grow up to be anything" spiel most kids are taught. And while I still think that second half is semi-true, for the first half, most people at some point most will realise is not true. At some point in life we learn that we may not be special, we're just like everyone else and Bolt deals with what it means to be normal. And through out the movie he learns that being normal, isnt that bad as long as you have good friends or a family who love you. Because in the end it doesnt matter whether or not you are the perfect superdog because you will always be special to them.

The scenes where I laugh the hardest were the ones where he tries to use heat vision.

I also cried at the superbark at the end.

I didnt know anything going into this movie and was actually about to turn it off in the opening 10 minutes thinking "this is dumb" before it took a turn into mind blownville and now it's one of my top 5 disney movies and probably my favourite Disney 3D animated film (tied with WallE)

Bolt is pretty much every hard hitting moment in th Toy Story trilogy rolled into one tight film. Bolt goes through Buzz LightYear syndrome (thinks is super, isnt), Mittens goes through the Jessie/Lotso complex (Abandoned and prefering to take what they can get rather than trust again) and they have the were about to die in a fire scene from TS3 and just like crazy imagination Andy lets go of his toys, crazy imagination Rhino lets go of television.

7.
Alice in Wonderland (1951)
Matt ranked it at 13. Shauna ranked it at 10.
OVERALL SCORE: 11.5

Matt: So this movie is 63 years old. Think about that. Back then people didn't have electricity, lived off the land and everyone was called Frank. Out of nowhere a man, we'll call him Dis Knee, had an idea. To take the cave paintings that everyone enjoyed so much and to put them in order very fast. It was called a motion picture. It was a huge success and then there was Dis Knee Land.

The end.

Alice in Wonderland is actually a messed up movie. Nothing makes sense, everything is bonkers and things are often mad. That's why it's amazing. It's off the wall nonsense from start to finish jumping from Random plot to random plot is very enjoyable. One minute you're drinking a million cups of tea, the next you are running away from a deck of cards run by a crazed queen. Nothing makes sense.

It's quirky, random and enjoyable. Very few movies manage to replicate this which is why it's a unique entry to this top 10.

Shauna: In an entry that surprised everyone, I’m sure, we have Alice in Wonderland. Closest agreement in ranking we’ve had so far, which is interesting. Curiouser and curiouser.

I didn’t have much exposure to Alice in Wonderland as a child – this movie or the original tale. Luckily for me, I chose to read the book not too long before I watched this with Matt, which gave me a whole new insight into how good this movie actually is as an adaptation.

As a little bit of background, Alice in Wonderland as a novel is essentially a bunch of individual set pieces that are unrelated to each other, and are generally just utter and complete nonsense from cover to cover. That is pretty much all there is to it. They are wonderful little nonsense set pieces, but nonsense nonetheless. Going back to the 1951 animated feature, they portrayed this entire concept rather well. Moving from piece to piece was about as seamless as it was in the original novel, which is to say you turned a page and suddenly you were somewhere new, which I didn’t have a problem with at all.

The colourful world of Wonderland is fun and weird and wacky, and the individual set pieces they chose to animate were wacky and weird and fun, just like it should be. Characters appeared for their bit and then left and Alice continued on acting like nothing had happened, other than being in a kind of crazy place. Alice adjusted to all the stuff rather well, actually, considering her situation. Ever the straight man, that Alice Liddell.

Anyway, I just really enjoyed it. I really like Wonderland and how they portrayed it. Thinking about it, I don’t really know how they could get it all that wrong!

…oh… Look at you, Disney Alice in Wonderland (2010)… How did you get everything so horribly dreadfully dreadfully horribly wrong?

Mulan (1998)
Matt ranked it at 14. Shauna ranked it at 8.
OVERALL SCORE: 11

Matt: Mulan is one of these entries that are high up on both of our lists. I have a strong preference for current Disney movies rather than the older entries if we ignore that awful period that was the early 2000s. Mulan is one of the pieces in Renaissance Disney that made the cut for me, which is why it is nestled here at #6.

Mulan being the story of a woman being pretending to be man really speaks to me.... Nah, just kidding, I can't relate to someone in that position. What Mulan does well though is to take the traditional female Disney character searching for love or to searching for something more (See Ariel, Jasmine etc.) and tells them to stop letting the men do all the fighting. Most female characters in Disney movies prior normally sit around picking flowers and singing about love. With few exceptions the female characters are normally the main focus on the movie until a big set piece at the end where the men take over and have a bit of a rumble. Mulan takes this differently by saying “Let’s give her a sword and have her sort things out”.

The movie starts off with Mulan prancing around the stables feeding the animals and then getting nagged at as she need to dress up like a ghost woman otherwise no man will want her. After some hijinks she is kicked out of marriage school and her dad is asked to fight some muscly dude because a weaselly dude asked him to. Mulan steals all her dad's stuff and runs away from home. After an 80 minute long training montage she fights the muscly dude and Mulan is named winner of China. The end.

Mulan overall ranks pretty high for me as it has a darker tone than most movies. Mulan is the story of the woman living in a man's world, but everyone ends up sharing the same experiences. Take heading to the destroyed village. The war affects everyone, but men are traditionally the only ones sent to fight. Previous Disney movies have villains with conquest as their goal but Shan Yu's methods are much more severe. Jafar is power hungry and wants to run Agrabah, but he uses internal corruption and his power to get there. Straight out murder and raiding towns gives much more of an impact.

Mulan is filled with great moments for me though. I made fun of the training montage earlier, but it's really a fun scene. The scene on the mountain side with the fireworks is also edge of your seat stuff. The only real thing limiting it is comic relief. I keep talking about comic relief in my reviews as it makes or breaks a movie for me. Mushu is not a good example. Other than the fact the Movie would be boring without anyone to talk, Mushu offers pretty much nothing of value to this movie and seems really out of place in this movie.

Mulan is a great movie start to finish but is faulted by a poor sidekick.

Shauna:As much as I loved watching Disney flicks as a kid, I never watched anything that was released past 1995. Classic Disney was what my parents knew, and they passed what they knew on to me. The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast made the cut too, for some reason. Most likely because they were released when my sister and I were younger. So when it came to 1998 and Mulan hit the silver screen, it didn’t even make the smallest blip on my radar. I don’t remember it being released. I don’t remember seeing adverts for it on the telly. It was a nothing for me.

My first exposure to Mulan was quite a while later, around 4-6 years after its initial release. I’m sure if you do the math there, you’ll work out what could have possibly prompted my venture into the world of Disney at that age. I was a little bit wary of Mulan, if I’m honest – I was coming off my pre-teen “Disney is for super babbies” thing, and this was the first “new” one I watched, so I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about it.

And to say I loved it would be a little bit of an understatement. I really love The Little Mermaid, but that is peppered with nostalgia. My enjoyment of Mulan was not, a genuinely good movie that was funny and emotional, and honestly, it spurred me on to watch all the rest of the Disney movies I missed. If I could be wrong about this one, what other excellent pieces of work did I pass by and wave off? But enough about Shauna’s own personal Disney Renaissance, let’s talk a bit more about Mulan.

I remember being impressed by the art style of Mulan. How it looked kind of traditional Chinese painting-ish. As I said before, I found it funny where it was due to be funny. I found it emotional when it was due to be emotional – god damn did I tear up something chronic when they passed through the mountain village and found that it had been destroyed and the army had failed. Why did I get so emotional at that point? I don’t know, I was a hormonal teenager. Judge me as you will. I found out that I knew what a concubine was, despite having no prior exposure to that word (that I can recall).

The characters are all likeable and entertaining – even Eddie Murphy as Mushu didn’t overstay his welcome. Mulan learning to be who she wants to be is an excellent message for anyone. Mushu was a bit of a dick, but he learned his lesson which is alright in the end. Shang and the rest of the new recruits are wonderfully entertaining. Shan-Yu is an intimidating villain, and it’s pretty impressive that he can survive an avalanche. All in all, it has a fantastic cast.

As always we touch on the music in this entry, which is also excellent. Pop “I’ll Make a Man Outta You” on at any party and everyone will be singing along, even if it is Donny Osmond. Although this is definitely the crowning jewel of the movie, I don’t say no to a little bit of “Reflection”, or “Honour to Us All”. Even if the Granny does have a magical voice change when she sings.

In terms of the plot, it is nice to see a woman take centre stage in a role that had her doing more than just falling in love. She fought her own battles, and stood her own ground, and showed that she was just as capable of doing the things she was told by society she wasn’t allowed to do. Which again, is a good message to send. That’s basically the entire plot in a nutshell, and I have little to complain about here.

As my reintroduction to the Disney Animated Classics, I probably couldn’t have chosen better than Mulan. It had everything I loved about all those old movies, and it added a whole new layer of what they could do. It made me excited for what I had missed, and for what could possibly be tacked next. Overall, definitely a movie worthy of being in my Top 10 personal favourites.

The thing that's so beautiful about Mulan isn't the gender nonconformity. If you zone in on that you're totally missing the actual point of the story, which is that she loved her father so much that she was willing to die for him so that he could be safe.

Seriously powerful stuff.

I mean, it's definitely also about breaking gender barriers. I think it's probably the first Disney movie with a female lead that wasn't about princess romance (which aren't bad, by the way). I think that's part of why it's so beloved.

But the real driving point of the story is familial love, but it's really subtle. I don't blame you for missing it, because it's not nearly as much in your face as SHE DA MAN!!!!!

Still, the transformation scene brings tears to my eyes EVERY TIME. When she sets down her comb and picks up her father's orders...just...tears. And when she's walking towards her ancestors to the beat of the music...CHILLS.

I think I should also mention that Mulan is hands down my favorite Disney movie of all time. The summer I was eight, I literally watched it and rewound it, then watched it again. I probably watched the movie six or eight times a day. I used to know every single line ever. Yeah.

I don't think they are. Matt dislikes them more than I do, for some reason. x} We have extensive discussions about them IRL.

I don't blame you for missing it

I didn't miss it, heck the movie makes a point of highlighting that entire thing when she's been found out to be a woman. Although, there Mulan herself says she did it for her Daddy (which is lovely), but more importantly she also did it so she could feel like less of a complete failure (which is also a fine thing). I just failed to comment on the entire plot thread. xD

Man, that music, yo. I think it's my favourite piece of music from the whole damn movie.
And then when her dad is running outside trying to find her in the rain. Many sads. I also love the scene at the end when he takes the gifts from the Emperor and just chucks them away because screw that, he just loves his kid and is happy to see her alive.

I know, right! "The greatest honor is having you for a daughter." LIKE DANG!

Also, I forgot to mention your comment on the art style. It's really great. The only other Disney movie (from what I can tell) that does that is Hercules. Which is part of the reason I like it so much. And those movies came out back-to-back, I think.

Yeah Mulan is my favourite 'Princess' movie - although yes, I know she's not a Princess yada yada... :roll2 It is a fantastic movie. You know when Mulan can smurf off? When her make-up just smurfing slides off. It's never that easy. I can believe she took down all the baddies and saved China, but I aint believing her sleeve cleaned her face like that.

Also, Shaunas. I watched Bolt today and I found it incredibly hard to hold in my feelings. I'll have to watch it again when Phil isn't sat in the same room so I can let out ALL DA TEARS. The fact that he is a white German Shepard has absolutely nothing to do with it at all... nope.

The second least believable thing about Mulan after the makeup removal is when Shang tells Mulan she is unsuited for the rage of war during the training montage he returns the horse to her whereas in reality he wouldve probably commandeered it for the greater good of China.

5.
Toy Story (1995)
Matt ranked it at 3. Shauna ranked it at 18.
OVERALL SCORE: 10.5

Matt: Before there was Bolt, there was Toy Story. Toy Story sticks out at my #3 in my top ten for being a fantastic movie. Incidentally, based on the average review score on Rotten Tomatoes (My point of reference for comparison) this is ranked #2 overall with a review score of 9/10. Surprisingly though there isn't much I can say about it. Toy Story is just filled with an endless amount of great moments that I will now share for you.

DwN6efmhp7E

Buzz appearing in the room and breaking the status quo immediately. Woody being the unquestioned leader and then Buzz shows up and shows that he's being replaced with better toys.

LGc894z7IPg

Until 2:30 – The driving scene to Pizza Planet is comedy gold.

N-Esh4W3dfI

The clawwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. I love this little scene because it just goes to emphases how helpless Woody has become since Buzz Showed up.

HAHpE_8IDOQ

Buzz after coming to the realisation that he might not be special, having one last shot at living up to what he's always believed. Triumphant music as he tries to live up to his destiny, and then the slow-mo crash landing leading to his broken dreams.

D5m33zK6ZlA

Mrs. Nesbitt.

okbdbbVyTbA
gsusakRf7T8

This entire escape plan and the scene in the yard with Sid afterwards.. Showing how Woody is a born leader and is improvising with the resources he has.

dIsFg3FSpEQ

This scene bringing the entire movie full circle. Woody regaining his trust with the other Toys Buzz making fun of Woody by referencing “Falling with style”. Triumphant music when neither of them die and then making back to the car be conclude the story. Brilliant.

Basically what I'm saying is go watch the movie.

Shauna:Reached the half way point on this list, and we have the movie that started it all. For Pixar.

I remember how amazing this was when it first came out, with its realistic looking graphics and great story with enjoyable characters. It’s still a great piece of film today, but as expected some of the animation just doesn’t look as good anymore. Not that it detracts from my enjoyment of the movie, it just made me go “Ohh, that dog looks really really weird”, as an example. But, regardless of that, it is still great for what it is, and what it did at the time.

Now that I have my “It looks a little bit funky here and there” out of the way, time to press on with things that made this film great!

…And I am really struggling, for some reason. It’s not that I don’t like Toy Story, because I do. I really enjoy everything this movie does.
The characters are well put together. I really like Woody’s character arc, and how he comes to accept the changes in his life. Buzz’s realisation that he was just a toy never fails to bring a single tear to my eye – and then moments later Mrs Nesbitt is making me howl with laughter. True Pixar form there, not letting you have one emotion for too long.

One thing I really loved about this movie was the inventiveness of the mutant toys in Sid’s room. Although the Baby-Spider-head was absolutely terrifying with its missing eye and, well, spider legs, it was also pretty damned cool. The rest of the mutant crew were also cool, the dolls with the dinosaur heads – amazing; the fishing rod-legs – amazing; strong-arm ducky - amazing… And they were all so nice too, despite how creepy they were. Don’t judge a book by its cover!

I do feel sorry for Sid though, what kind of terrible trauma must that kid have gone through after the toys attacked him. But it’s all okay, because the toys are the good guys!

Don’t feel like I have too much more to say on this. I guess it just didn’t leave as much of an impact on me as other movies on this list. Well, not so much less of an impact… I don’t know. I guess I just think it’s a well-rounded movie, which has a lot of fantastic things going for it without anything that particularly stands out to me. It makes me laugh, it makes me sad… I’m at the edge of my seat when Woody and Buzz are attached to that damn firework… It does everything right! I just wish I had more to say.

What a terrible note to end this on. xD

4.
Wreck-It Ralph (2012)
Matt ranked it at 1. Shauna ranked it at 16.
OVERALL SCORE: 8.5

Matt: Right, it's game time. Get it, because this move is about video games, heh. I am funny, laugh. Anyways, this is my #1.

Wreck it Ralph for me is an exceptional movie. Minus the fact it has all the video game cameos and references it has at its heart it's all based on Video Games. When I had to decide if this would make number one I had to decide, does this beat away dogs to the #1 spot? It does. I'll break this down into categories cause this will be looooong... First the setting/environment and then the characters.

http://31.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_md57er0Izc1rrgn4qo1_500.gif

#1 – Setting / Environment

Starting off with the setting and environment this movie. Everything is based on a video game. It would be considering its set in an arcade. It's funny that I've never, and will never experience the joy of waking up early in the morning with a pocket full of change running to an arcade to play video games. It's primarily an American, 80s kid thing that I am neither of. For those wondering, this is another reason why I'm not a fan of retro gaming. I never had that connection until the N64 and I only saw games getting better at that point so why go back.

So being set in the arcade we see games come and go, but we only really see the environments of 4 Games. Fix it Felix Jnr, Tapper, Hero's Duty and Sugar Rush. One criticism I will hear about this movie and accept is that it's very narrow considering the multitude of games that it could contain, but it think it keeps the story concise. The area of Fix it Felix Jnr is linked to the retro gaming environment. Basic looking, basic gameplay. Nothing too taxing which is standard from 30 year old games. Tapper is the same, but we are only very briefly in this bar. Not much to say here.
Hero's Duty is where the movie opens up for me. Throwing Ralph into a modern game is amazing. Several things are contrasted from Wreck it Ralph here. Firstly, the gameplay is different from “one guy destroy a building” to “AN ARMY OF ALIEN BUGS WANTS TO DESTROY EVERYTHING”. Next the music, from charming loops of music to dubstep, Inclusion of guns and we see exactly how “violent and scary” games are these days. Comparing Hero’s Duty to Wreck it Ralph shows how much both gaming, and our culture has changed in the last 30 years.

https://33.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mcz6dk4LkF1rk24w8o1_500.gif

Second big point of call here is Sugar Rush. There are three main things in sugar rush. Sweets, Go Karting and the Japanese Style. I'm not a major sweet nut, but Go Karting and Anime are two things that I've been brought up with and love to death. Mario Kart is my second favourite franchise behind Zelda, and I love seeing all the aspects I love about Mario Kart in Sugar Rush. Shortcuts, obstacles, weapons, ridiculous circuits it's all in there in the short time we actually see kart racing. One thing you may not have caught is that the song “Sugar Rush” is sung by Japanese idol group AK-0048. All of the characters are stylised to look like children but I believe this is a chibi art style employed by the artists which can be supported by the theme song being in Japanese. I'm a big fan of the entire sugar rush environment and everything about it, even if we spend 60%+ of the movie in there,

#2 – Characters

4 main characters, one main overarching villain. Standard format. Playing with the characters we have though is what makes the characters goods. I'll run down the list of my least to most favourite

King Candy

King Candy is a jerk wad. Ruling over the candy kingdom, he wants the game to run according to the program. This is the normal for most games, sticking to what they are designed for and rarely deviating from the path. King Candy is an enigma wrapped in a sugary outer layer. He wants the program to run smoothly, and needs to be the bad guy to do it. He does this by testing Ralph's resolve towards the end of the movie. Then that – that he was a virus that had affected sugar rush and knocked Vanellope out from her rightful place as ruler of the candy kingdom – at the end before the final boss. I actually didn't see if coming in the cinema when I first saw this and was genuinely surprised and shocked. It all plays well and goes to establish his power hungry character.

http://media.tumblr.com/ada6d8472cbbe5c941a4ebe82b027feb/tumblr_inline_mls8taoFdf1rnc69n.gif

Fix it Felix Jnr.

I had a think about this. I feel that there isn't much to Felix's character, at least when compared to the others on this list of good guys. Felix is a nice guy, a supposed direct parallel to Ralph. Felix is down pretty low because outside of the interactions with the other characters, he doesn't really have a character himself. He's the one in this list that goes through the least development. He's nice to a fault and this gets him in trouble often, the moments that he does make an appearance are always either awkward or hilarious (see party / laffy taffy).

http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_ma9l8q6Mpn1qbxfjqo1_r1_500.gif

Sergeant Tamora Jean Calhoun

Not going to lie, I had to look up her name. I call her Space Marine Chick. If she heard me call her that though she would murder me. I have voiced my complaints about previous female Disney characters in that they traditionally have a lot of development before stepping aside at the last moment to let the men fight it out. Space Marine chick takes the helm as leader of her squadron and chases after danger herself. In scenes where she could be considered to act feminine (example – after the laffy taffy scene with Felix) she tends to brush them off and traditionally break the gender stereotype. Perhaps one of my favourite female Disney Females ever, just for the fact that she is totally in charge of every situation she's involved in.

http://static.tumblr.com/5f5c6d82796ff6ea8d749b9e1299bad7/l8wvcpr/RhVmylku5/tumblr_static_tumblr_mjczwop1571rmfaevo10_500.gif

Ralph

Ralph's not #1? Yeah, I love Vanellope but he's a close second. Ralph is the one on this list that goes through the most development. He starts the movie upset with his dead end job which is immediately relatable. He's hated for doing his job and wanted to be appreciated. Interacting with those people that he works for made it worse and he runs out to find something to win their approval. #officelyfe. Queue attempting to win reward elsewhere and failing, causing issues down the line before meeting Vanellope. Meeting Vanellope, lying to her about his intentions and then being wrecking everything in site until they come to a deal. Ralph finding an ally for the first time ever, breaking into the factory and destroying everything in sight in a great scene for me because Ralph thinks he's trashed everything again, but really he's created something just for Vanellope when she has nothing of her own. It's touching how excited over something that he thinks is a failure. His “Liar Reveal” stage where he's given his medal back by King Candy to realise his actions hurt everyone that depended on him before coming back and trying to resolve the issues. All before the Final Boss fight where Ralph gains the closure that he doesn't need the approval of everyone. Just one person is enough.

This is a great message, especially to me. As a nerdy kid, I feel like my childhood was terrible because I played games. I was an outcast and people would spend all their time hanging with their friends. For the longest time I thought my childhood was crap because of this, but I had friends that shared my interests so in retrospect, I too found the closure I needed to accept my childhood wasn't awful. Here's an interesting thing to note. Wreck it Ralph, Bolt and Toy Story are my top 3, and all are about closure of who you really are. Think about that.

Vanellope

Time for a massive wall o' text on Vanellope. Nah, I'm not gonna do that to you this time. Vanellope goes through two major scenes of development. 1 – Ralph wreck the car and she's upset. 2 – Ralph fixes the car and she forgives him. Other than that it's business as normal for her. Vanellope is a bratty kid, but in all the right ways. She's wise cracking, but also very childish. She's intelligent, but also cocky. She's easy to forgive and shows genuine excitement for most of the movie. She's a very genuine character. Consistently funny and just pulls it all back before she reaches into the “Annoying” category of bratty kids.

http://31.media.tumblr.com/750bb5585fa621c7d7fc60693a6ebf4c/tumblr_n0wkrpEKXD1sqn3nno1_250.gif

I've pretty much covered everything above related to story, but the story of accepting who you are is a big hit for me, and features as a key point in each of my top #3. Ralph accepting who he is and willing to sacrifice everything to save Vanellope, the one person that cared about him made me cry. The twist with King Candy actually caught me off guard, Generally Vanellope, Felix and Space Marine Chick doing their business, the video game references, the hidden messages, the ending credits, the music the EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS MOVIE. I do wonder “When will I see you again” Wreck it Ralph.

Shauna:Wreck-It Ralph. It is a movie that has lots of video game stuff in it. What more could you want from a movie?

I apparently wanted more from it as I ranked it anywhere except #1.

Nah, I think this a great little film. It is a bright and colourful movie, with characters that I couldn’t help but fall in love with, just a little bit. Although, Fix-It Felix could never be anyone except Kenneth the Page in my mind, which made for some interesting viewing. It blends comedy light-heartedness and serious excellently, leaving me coming out the other end feeling happy with what I just experienced.

Right, let’s get to it.

The video game setting was a pretty cool one. I feel like they could have rested on their laurels a little bit and let the video game excitement carry it a lot more than they did. Nope, they had a solid plot with a great cast peppered with so many video game Easter eggs. They just enhanced an already excellent movie-watching experience. It really was great, though, seeing a whole host of random video game characters just floating around in the background. Always catch something new on a subsequent rewatch. Eventually I’ll have spotted them all!

There are some excellent comedy moments in this, particularly from the character interactions. Ralph and Vanellope play off each other very well. Speaking of Vanellope, I was genuinely surprised that she didn’t annoy me more. She had all the makings of a character I could easily hate, but I didn’t. She tugged on my heartstrings when she wasn’t making me giggle with her childish commentary. Back to the comedy stylings. I also really liked the visual puns (would this even be the right term? Eh) in Sugar Rush - the oreos made me laugh more than I’d care to admit, as an example. Some of the video game related jokes were great as well – as terrible as it is, Calhoun being programmed with the most tragic backstory ever will never not make me grin. Speaking of, Felix and Calhoun are pretty good too, although I feel like they were designated a little bit to comic relief back up. But that’s fine, it works well within the film.

As expected, I also got a number of swift punches to my general feelings area from this film. Ralph tends to be the cause of many of my sad feelings. Whether it’s because he’s being a massive jerk because he wants the best for Vanellope, or when he is accepting who he is… it all makes me very sad. Admittedly there were one or two tears shed. Ralph is a solid character himself, starting off doing things selfishly and thinking only within his tiny little game world, but coming to care about someone else, and being willing to give everything up for that little girl… great.

Overall, this is a fantastic movie. It’s not my favourite, but it is super fun and the soundtrack is not too bad either if you care about that sort of thing. If you passed on this one, I’d say you should give it a go. My Mum, who went into this expecting to hate it, found something to enjoy about it, then you can too!

3.
The Emperor’s New Groove (2000)
Matt ranked it at 6. Shauna ranked it at 7.
OVERALL SCORE: 6.5

Matt: So when you think Disney you think of magic and wonderful movies like Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Frozen etc. How many of you've actually watched “The Emperor's New Groove”? Most of you? Oh. Well for the few that haven't The Emperor's New Groove is one of those rare Disney Movies that flies just below the radar.

The reason this ranks at our number 3 isn't because it's has grand set pieces, is beautiful or has a great musical score like most other Disney classics. The Emperor's New Groove is a whirlwind of Laughs from start to finish. Legitimately if you've not laughed at least once every minute something is wrong with you. From Kuzco being a massive narcissistic jerk, Pacha being the straight man even in the face of death, Kronk being a loveable dumbass or Yzma being legitimately the worst Disney villain of all time everything seems to roll together in one massive package so neatly. There is no room for breath before the next set piece or joke is set up.

I'm not going to sell this more than it needs to. If you've seen this, you know what this movie is. If you've not, go watch it. It's like an hour long.

Shauna:Unlike Mulan, I remember this movie coming out pretty vividly. A few of my friends went to see it at the cinema, and raved about how good it was. I didn’t see it though because I wasn’t invited along, not that I’m sore about that or anything. But it didn’t matter anyway, because I specifically remember being right in the middle of my “Disney is for smelly babbies” phase of my life, and I definitely didn’t want to see this dumb kids rubbish anyway. So I didn’t see it, and I didn’t care to see it.

Roll on my Disney binge and this was one of the ones I was a little bit hesitant about, because of my initial childish “No thank you” reaction to it, all those years previous. But. I watched it because that’s what I was doing. It was a Disney movie and it needed to be viewed.

To say I was pleasantly surprised would be an understatement. I don’t think I have laughed so much at a movie in my life. This may be an exaggeration, but I’ll let it stand since this movie really is just that good. It is just pure comic genius from start to finish. The visual humour is fantastic, and it is a really well written movie. Some of the lines they come out with are hilarious. A lot of the movies so far on this list have been touching and emotional and there may have been tears, but The Emperor’s New Groove needs none of that to be a fantastic piece of work. Except tears. Of laughter.

The story is mainly nonsense, and the characters are all super goofy. But it all comes together nicely in the end. Although they are silly, the characters really are the ones who make the movie worthwhile. Kuzco and Pacha are our, well, heroes I suppose you could say, despite Kuzco being a massive twat for the whole movie (even when he half turns over a new leaf). They have a pretty amusing bromance and they play well off each other.

But really, the stars of the show are Yzma and Kronk. The least threatening and villainous Disney bad guys to grace our screens – and that’s okay, they really don’t need to be. Much like our heroes, these two are an amazing tag team of laughs. Kronk in particular. I definitely came away from this movie with him as my favourite character. He’s just so delightfully dense. Pity his sequel wasn’t fantastic – he’s just not a deep enough character to carry his own film. None of them are, really, but that’s why The Emperor’s New Groove didn’t focus on just one of them.

Really that’s all there is to this movie. Laughs. And then some more laughs. I can’t think of many other Disney Animated Classics that tried to do this. And succeeded too – Meet the Robinsons tried, but they didn’t seem to know what it was that made The Emperor’s New Groove so fantastic. If you haven’t seen it, give it a watch. You’ll probably like it.

I'm a little surprised to see this so high, but pleasantly so. What made the movie for me was Yzma and Kronk playing off of each other. Patrick Warburton & Eartha Kitt were perfectly cast as those two, and their back-and-forth creates some of the most memorable humor in Disney animation history. I love Eartha Kitt (MSRIP).

I love how oblivious so many of the characters are. Kuzko is oblivious of his own idiocy, as well as Yzma's complicity, even though she barely even tries to hide it. Yzma seems oblivious to Kronk's incompetence (otherwise, what's her excuse), and Kronk seems oblivious to, well, everything.

The poisoning scene is fantastic, the scene at Pacha's house is great, but the scene that made me laugh the most is Kronk hauling Kuzko's body to dispose of it. Kronk's humming, his attempt to hide against the wall, the...here I'll just post it.

3.
Tangled (2010)
Matt ranked it at 4. Shauna ranked it at 9.
OVERALL SCORE: 6.5

Matt: So Tangled. This one comes out of left field for me because I have had a habit of not enjoying “Disney Princess” movies. Tangled for me is different though and hits at my #4 spot.

Rapunzel acts like a shut in teenage girl should act. Shy and timid. At the beginning of the movie when she captures Flynn and is super arrogant that she managed to defend herself against a home invader. She is blissfully unaware that anyone can be evil when she reaches the bar because she has never seen a person act evil before. The joy of seeing the festival. Taking a stand against Mother Gothel. It's all action that feel real which emphasises Rapunzel as a character. Intermingle this with the little scenes like her flip flopping between being amazed and distraught that she actually fled the tower make her my Favourite Disney Princess

http://stream1.gifsoup.com/view2/3390496/rapunzel-best-day-ever-o.gif

Flynn too is brilliant. His level of characterisation is on par with Rapunzel as they both go on an adventure of self-discovery. Flynn comes to terms with the fact that there are more important things than stealing and getting rich when he has someone to protect. He still keeps his smug jackass attitude throughout which is amazing. Comparing that to Maximus who is just a start to finish badass pull it together really well. Funny how Disney Princesses manage to tame animals so well.

https://38.media.tumblr.com/132f6a8b000506d2960d7fa74877f814/tumblr_mjgd3bSD0j1s4o1sbo1_500.gif

So right, this one may be tipped in the scales slightly, but Mother Gothel really hits a note for me. Until I was about 12 years old I had an evil stepmother. I have now become a Disney Trope. Lady Tremaine and Mother Gothel stand out as villains to me as I feel I've been in that situation. Being asked to do all the chores as a 10 year old without any thanks gets to you. Mother Gothel stands out as she is so very selfish. Every action she takes is in her own best interest with the exception of going to get Rapunzel the paints. That's one genuine act of selflessness, and it only comes about to get Rapunzel to shut up. It's not the same sort of worry you get from villains like Jafar where you know he'll make your life agony using superpowers, it's more you know she's capable of doing horrible things when she gets mad. That fear of the unknown is scary.

http://cdn4.teen.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/tangled-mother-gothel-bad-guy.gif

Tangled sticks out as my favourite Disney Princess movie, because everything seems so genuine (Well, exception that action scene at the mine). It all comes together for me in one brilliant movie.

It also has my contender for “Best Disney Song”

yD_IEqxp-e0

Shauna:I love Tangled. I went into it expecting to enjoy it, and I really did – it did not disappoint. When I watched it, I had a distinct feeling of Disney going back to a better place with their movies, a return to form, almost. Their entries in the 00s were not fantastic overall, but Tangled just ticked a lot of boxes for me in what I always enjoyed about Disney movies. Everything comes together into a fantastic package.

All of the characters are great. Rapunzel really grows throughout the movie, transforming into someone who will defend herself and will not be talked down to or made to feel stupid or that she’s constantly doing things wrong. The moment that this movie hooked me (not that the parts before were bad, they were great too), was when Rapunzel had escaped the tower and she was flipping between being the happiest person ever, and hating herself for being a terrible person and lying to her mother. It just felt so genuine – I know that I’ve mentally flip-flopped over things I’ve said or done in a similar way. It kind of just cemented this movie as something great in my mind.

Flynn Rider is hilarious from start to finish, and his interactions with Maximus are some of the best parts of the film. He is arrogant and egotistical, but he’s just about as amazing as he builds himself up to be. The joy of building a perfect persona, eh? He’s a good guy though, and that comes through when it needs to.

Villian-wise, Mother Gothel is sinister. We know that she only loves Rapunzel because of her magic, and boy does she really loves that flower! But yeah, what makes her really effective is the way she can be quite motherly to Rapunzel, but it’s always just… off. Obviously all the cruel and cutting things she says to Rapunzel do not fall under that category, those are just her being her true terrible self. But, other interactions… Oh that’s nice that she’s going to make a long journey to get some bits for paint! But we know as the audience that she’s just doing it so Rapunzel will stay in the tower and not try to run away – she needs to keep her precious flower close. I found her to be very well written. Also “Mother Knows Best” isn’t too shabby a song, particularly the reprise.

The set pieces in this movie are fantastic too. The Snuggly Duckling is amazing and is overall comedy gold. The entire mine battle? The most ridiculous thing I’ve ever seen. The entire stretch of being in Corona was beautiful – that music they played over the top of the dancing, and then the lantern scene… I tear up man. Every time without fail.

Yeah, it’s just a gorgeous movie, with just the right amount of heart. I could probably gush about it some more, but I'm trying to keep this concise! It’s definitely one I will go back to for years to come, and it deserves its spot in my own person top 10 alongside Beauty and the Beast and The Rescuers.

Also Rapunzel looked way better with blonde hair. Nothing wrong with the brunette look, of course, she just suited blonde way better.

It's overrated, I agree. It's only overrated because they kept making a kabillion different covers for that one song and instantly including them in Once Upon a Time and Kingdom Hearts III without letting people get so much as a breath. If Disney knew how to pace themselves it wouldn't be so bad.

Tarzan (1999)
Matt ranked it at 8. Shauna ranked it at 4.
OVERALL SCORE: 6

Matt: Look guys. I legitimately do not know why Tarzan is at #2 on this list. This one caught us off guard when we made up this list. We've crunched the numbers twice and it's our #2 and no one really knows why. It's one of those rare films that myself and Shauna both put in our top 10, which is why it's soared past by clearly better movies like Wreck it Ralph or Bolt. Obvs

That being said, Tarzan's pretty good. This made my #8 just because of the setting and the music. I think Two Worlds One Family makes four appearances in this movie for real. Never gets old. This song is also amazing.

-rxOVpetZTY

Putting together a huge number of seeming random noises and bringing them all together for one amazing song after it gets going.

In terms of actual characters and story, there are two things that really stick out for me in this movie. The first is Tarzan's curiosity after he finds out that he's not the only human. Flipping through the photos that they have and learning English stand out here. The wonder in Tarzan's eyes when he learns there is a much larger world out there. The second is all the delightful English characters. I mean, I love pompous English characters, they are always hilarious. Clayton, Jane and Archimedes just being so prudish about pretty much every situation are always entertaining and you know it.

That's all I got tbh. I just think this is a good movie filled with great music and curiosity.

Shauna:When going into this Disney watchathon, I did not expect Tarzan to hit my Top 10. I mean, I always imagined that it would be high up, because I do really like the film. But to be #4 for me? Honestly a shock to myself, even now. Again, this wasn’t one that I watched as a kid aside from some clips here and there at my aunt’s. Tarzan was essentially another Mulan for me.

Thinking about why I enjoyed this so much… I’m not sure. I remember talking to Matt about it after we watched it, and I said something like it just struck the perfect balance of funny and serious for me. It’s never tearjerking, but various points did make me sad, and they are paced well throughout the whole movie. Some of the lines in it are very clever, and over the many times I’ve watched it, it never fails to make me laugh. A good example is the introduction of Tarzan and Jane to each other - it is amusing then very suddenly it becomes touching within moments, without feeling like there’s emotional whiplash going on.

I also really like the soundtrack. All that classic Phil Collins. One of my favourites, for reasons unbeknownst to anyone.

The characters hit all the right spots for me too. Tarzan is a bit bland, but his heart is in the right place, and I really felt his frustration at being different. His animal best friends are also okay – they toe the annoying line, but don’t ever outright cross the line - and I really love the “Trashin’ the Camp” scene. The ape cast are pretty good – Kerchak and Kala’s extremely polar opposite reactions to losing a kid unfold well throughout the movie. The human bunch are pretty good too – the Professor gets a good few laughs out of me as the quirky old guy. Clayton is a great villain, you always know he’s no good, but then when he betrays them all… Argh, you evil man! I should have expected this! Can’t go wrong with Brian Blessed either.

So. Writing this up, I realise my favourite part of this movie. Jane. So delightfully British. So funny. I’m not sure why she resonates so much with me. She just… does. She’s adventurous, wandering around jungles by herself. Well, that’s a bit stupid of her. That scene where she meets the baby monkey gets me every time, it is just so over the top. Despite the stupidity, you can tell she cares about the animals and the jungle, refusing to follow the Clayton destruction paths and frowning upon the incessant shootan’ Clayton does. She’s also kind of weird and awkward particularly when trying to deal with uncivilised Tarzan, which makes for a lot of comedy moments. Man, I dunno. I just think she’s great.

It all just comes together into a movie I really enjoy – admittedly, some parts more than others – but yeah. A fun jungle romp.

This is the rest of our "Top Twenty", so these are essentially the honourable mentions!

Lilo & Stitch (Matt: 17, Shauna: 12, Score: 14.5)

The Little Mermaid (Matt: 26, Shauna: 3, Score: 14.5)

Brave (Matt: 15, Shauna: 17, Score: 16)

A Goofy Movie (Matt: 7, Shauna: 33, Score: 20)

Frozen (Matt: 21, Shauna: 20, Score: 20.5)

Cinderella (Matt: 39, Shauna: 5, Score: 22)

Lady and the Tramp (Matt: 32, Shauna: 13, Score: 22.5)

We had to both really enjoy the movies for them to make this list. So while perhaps looking at our individual Top lists you may go "Yes, I see that this is acceptable", they need to cross over on both our lists. Which is how weird ones like Tarzan sneak their way in, perhaps not the greatest by any means, but if they hit the right chord with both of us... Here they are.

1.
The Great Mouse Detective (1986)
Matt ranked it at 5. Shauna ranked it at 6.
OVERALL SCORE: 5.5

Matt: So here's the thing about Basil the Great Mouse Detective. More than Emperor's New Groove I feel that this movie is one of the true overlooked Disney Classics. Rarely is a Disney both filled with such nonsense as well as being so dark. It blends the two together so well. Like Tarzan, this one is a sleeper hit we did not intend to see so high, but were pleased when it was. As it's the #1, I can't just say “Hey this movie is something you should watch because it's good” You'll want more than that won't you? You monsters.

https://38.media.tumblr.com/affe747981e84b85b808da7bc274f564/tumblr_ne49f0BcHQ1s00mlso7_500.gif

This movie is so ridiculously camp, but so sinister at the same time. The start of the movie starts off looking at a toy maker and his daughter before a peg legged bat breaks through the window, beats him up and kidnaps him while his daughter watches. The adorable little Scottish Mouse seeks the help of Basil the Great Mouse Detective after having nowhere else to turn. Basil takes the case after finding out that it is directly related to Professor Ratigan, his nemesis.

https://33.media.tumblr.com/9f7a181a3c153ea808ab2c3fc1da619c/tumblr_mny6q80aPf1rt1ivno7_500.gif

Professor Ratigan is the most wonderful villain in all of Disney. You may not know what a pantomime is outside of the UK, but it's a silly stage show. Villain is a pantomime villain through and through. Take his song The World's Greatest Criminal Mind” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QP8QdFttugg ). He sings about how he's the smartest criminal in the world, and everyone sings to his success. That is until someone correctly calls him a rat and he has them straight up murdered (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TjGi3s8P3FA) . It's fresh to see a villain that is silly and also so menacing. He also has big goals where he straight up wants to kill the queen to rule the British Empire (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQxYubh-ffc). It's a amazing.

http://media0.giphy.com/media/4QkmcoddJZUU8/200_s.gif

The good guys are also Superb in this. Basil, much like Sherlock Holmes, is an eccentric genius. In the later part or movie, the whole crew is kidnapped facing certain death until within his madness Basil uses complex mathematical equations to stop 4 individual methods of certain doom from killing himself and Dawson at once (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=taMg5VN83tM). This is the setting for the entire movie. Basil gets out of stupid silly situations using hilariously ingenious methods. I mean, look how he puts together a clue for how to get to his next location (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLU-HjJW0SM ) which is followed up by the smuttiest song in Disney's History (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2IctxaCPqw). Even the final battle between Ratigan and Basil atop big ben is concluded in such a fantastic way. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ye4cbL77dw4 ) Truly concluding that brain is better than Brawn.

http://i.imgur.com/3iVl6.gif

Basil the Great Mouse Detective may be an out of nowhere hit for our #1, but it is definitely deserving of the top spot. I suggest that everyone seek it out if they haven't already done so.

Shauna:Hipster enough for you all, Eyes on Final Fantasy? Are you not entertained?! How much do you hate everything we stand for?! Bring it on, nerds!
What can be said about The Great Mouse Detective? It’s a fun little mystery movie, set in the mouse world. For anyone who doesn’t know, it’s essentially Sherlock Holmes, if he were a rodent. Wait… I think I see a trend in the movies I enjoy. Mice + Adventure = Shauna’s faves.

This is just a great film. As I said before, it’s a fun adventure through mousey London, but it can also be quite dark at times. Some of the things that happen in it are silly and ridiculous, but the seriousness of the plot balances that out and keeps everything moving forward. Really, you’re going to replace the Mouse Queen of Britain with a clockwork creation? Sure thing.

I really enjoy the cast of this movie. I mean, yes, they’re pretty much Sherlock Holmes and Co, but that’s perfectly fine. Basil is a bit of a prat, disregarding his team because he is on a superior level to everyone. But you can’t deny that he is brilliant, and the movie makes a point of showing this off when it can, with ridiculous deductions from almost nothing. Some of the best parts are when Basil is onto something and he just says and does a bunch of smart sounding and scientific things and boom, he has all the answers. It’s great. Dawson is very much just the Watson character, Basil’s faithful sidekick, helping out to solve the mystery the best he can, slapping some sense into Basil when necessary. Olivia is an adorable little Scottish mouse who is adorable and that’s pretty much it.

As for the villain, Ratigan is impressive. Voiced by the eternally wonderful Vincent Price, he gets the character just right. He is brilliant, just like Basil. He is seriously campy, singing songs about how wonderful he is; wearing top hats and a cravat. At the same time as all this, he is openly evil – kidnapping children and having his henchmen fed alive to his cat. But, when he cracks when his plans are all falling apart, he becomes truly menacing. A terrifying animalistic… well, rat. And it is a chilling transformation.

The location pieces are really great too. From the furious battle in the Tower of London between Basil and Ratigan, to the reveal of the replacement Mouse Queen in Buckingham Palace. I also really like all the scenes in the tavern and Ratigan’s base, that’s where the whole two musical numbers take place, which are wonderful, and also where the funny moments of the movie really shine. Oh that Dawson, drinking the spiked alcohols. What a character!

Honestly, this movie is just a lot of fun, while still keeping an edge of the serious matter at hand. Unlike the Emperor’s New Groove, which is fun, but it focuses on the silly. I guess I just like a little bit of a serious and dark tone in my movies. Oh, also, mice having crazy romps rescuing people.

Don't care. I still liked it. Melody being similar to her mother made sense to me, and I liked her relationship with Ariel. Morgana constantly being in her sister's shadow and surpassing her by holding the trident longer than she did was something I always enjoyed as well. It's definitely straight to video worthy, but not a bad movie to watch to kill the time.

It just felt incredibly cheap and lazy. They pretty much just made the same movie all over again, except it was significantly worse than the original.

Brother Bear 2 was one that did that too, but I don't think it hit the same heights of "Can you be any lazier with this?". They at least made some kind of minimal effort to make the movie even a little bit different.
