View Full Version : Pike Plays Literally Every Game on Her Steam List (Current Game: Blood Bowl)

Steam says I own 354, however I think that it counts DLC and expacs as games so the real number is probably closer to 250ish.

Because finishing each game would probably take approximately ten billion years, my goal is to dump at least one hour into each game (more if I like it or it's engaging), post screenshots and the like, and talk about it. Then move on to the next one on the list.

Anyone interested?

Edit:

All right let's do it.

I'll be going in vaguely alphabetical order, so we're going to start out with a game I have never played before called

10,000,000
RPG/Action/Puzzle/Indie
Steam Link (http://store.steampowered.com/app/227580/')

So with no idea what I was going into I opened up the game and immediately this popped up:

60602

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a109/Pikestaff/smiley/emot-ohdear_zps1e0d1059.png

But it turns out that this just means it's a point and click game, don't worry :shobon:

You start out as a guy in a dungeon. You have a bunch of broken rooms and trout that you can repair, but you don't have any dosh, so you get to try to escape or something. This is where puzzle stuff starts happening!

60603

Basically by sliding tiles around and matching items you can create combos which allow you to do things like, you know, hit the enemy guys or unlock chests.

60604

Every item does something different! HOT DAMN!

60605

Also you can get materials to repair your castle and trout.

The first level is pretty easy. Unfortunately after that the game becomes hard as balls. Basically you need to match up certain items to pass certain checkpoints (i.e. if you find a treasure chest you have to match up the keys) and if you're not in a particularly easy position to do so, then you're boned. This happens more than you would guess. Treasure chests will quickly become the bane of your existence.

On the plus side the music is really REALLY good and if you like chiptunes you should probably get this game just so you can bounce along to the bleeps and bloops.

Eventually you can rebuild stuff!

60606

Each room has different building requirements so you have to run the dungeon until you actually meet them. But once you do you unlock cool upgrades for yourself, like so:

60607

In a way this game is a lot like Rogue Legacy or Dark Souls, by which I mean you're going to have to run the dungeon loop a million times, and die a million times, to get anywhere. But the upgrade system makes things pretty addictive.

60608

Like, really, really addictive. :shobon:

So yeah. Nothing much else to show. It's a puzzler with some RPG elements and you'll happily waste a ton of time on it.

THE VERDICT:

Good
Worth a Steam sale buy
GREAT MUSIC
Addictive
Hard
Really hard
oh god hard
I never asked for this
Dark Souls if Dark Souls was a puzzle game with great chiptunes
Say goodbye to your life it's seriously addictive

That games looks like something I'd love! Do you fight any enemies, or is it all puzzle?

Pike

You fight the enemies by doing the puzzle. For example matching up swords does physical damage.

Age of Empires II
Real Time Strategy
Steam Link (http://store.steampowered.com/app/221380/)

Ah yes. Age of Empires II. We all played this, right? ...right?

Okay. You played this if you were a strategy nerd a la Civ and StarCraft. Turns out I was, so of course I played this back in the day.

Supposedly this is an HD edition of it, although I can't tell much of a difference. That's okay because NOSTALGIA.

60617

Look at that image. You know what that makes me want to do? It makes me want to

http://i.imgur.com/IZWOeV0.gif

That's what.

Okay let's get a game started, I'm picking random because that's how I roll as a grognard and AWWWW YEAH I'M THE AZTECS http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a109/Pikestaff/smiley/getin001_zpscd2687d5.gif

60618

It soon becomes clear that I haven't played this game in forever, because I suck, as can be seen by the score counter on the right side of the screen.

60619

The Persians and Mongols (filthy dumb foreign scum) quickly decide that sending in horses one by one is the WAY TO VICTORY, unfortunately for them I have Eagle Warriors :smug:

60620

I spend the next 70 minutes gathering resources, upgrading, falling further and further behind my opponents :shobon: , and building a derpy wall.

60621

Which the Persians proceeded to smash right through and then it was game over for Pike. :(

60622

final game military score smurfIN LOL

60623

And that, my friends, is the story of Pike Plays AoE II HD.

THE VERDICT:

GREAT STUFF
PLAY IT WHILST DRUNK
NOSTALGIA
MULTIPLAYER
Worth full price if you remember this from back in the day, otherwise wait for a sale
CLASSIC RTS one of the best of all time
It's like Civ if Civ was an RTS instead of a TBS/4X
You should probably buy it

I have successfully completed the tutorial mode of AoEII. :smug:

I also played it multiplayer with Matt and a friend, as my first experience with the game, before I did any tutorials. The two of them played it when they were younger, so knew what was up. I was all "Ooh, I managed to get two people to collect wood!" and "I upgraded to the second age!", while they were going on about collecting relics and killing each other. Needless to say, I didn't win at any point over the course of our 4/5 games.

Now that I remembered how to actually play AoE II, I did a second game and did considerably better.

This is a fantastic idea for a thread and thanks to this post, I am officially subscribing to it. Keep them coming!

I used to play AoE with my cousin and a few friends when they would gather all these PCs and put them in one room on a table so we couldn't see each others screens and then we would just hear sniggering every now and then and otherwise spend time lolling and betraying each other to much dismay and it was amazing.

Airline Tycoon II
Simulation/Management/Economy
Steam Link (http://store.steampowered.com/app/201490/)

Things started out bad when I had to sign up some sort of account with my email in order to play the damn game. Honestly, were it not for this thread and my resolve to play every game I own, I probably wouldn't have bothered with it.

Then things promptly got worse when I saw the horrifying graphics, which primarily revolved around various stereotypes lovingly rendered by the original PlayStation or something.

60678

I opted to go with Buttchin, because he appeared to be the least offensive option.

He also has a whole backstory where he is Citizen Kane or something.

60679

And apparently his phone is the Eye of Sauron.

60680

I proceeded to pay a visit to Albert Einstein. This is where I made the rather horrifying realization that nobody in this world has a neck.

60681

Anyways, here you can mess with all the parts of your airplane, Kerbal Space Program style.

You can also customize the interior, which begins by looking like a submarine manned by this rather flamboyant fellow.

60682

After this you get to customize the livery of your plane. You can pick from any color of the rainbow (the best part), and then add ridiculous logos like biohazard signs if you want because why not.

60683

Ultimately I went for a nice teal color with green trim, which makes it look like the official plane for the Seattle Seahawks or something.

60684

At this point I have to go talk to the manager of the airport, who I guess is actually Don Corleone. The Don lets me set up a route so now my airplane can go from Hamburg to Heathrow and back (this game is made by the Germans if you haven't figured that out)

60685

Finally things start to get interesting. I can set up a schedule for my plane, so it can depart Heathrow at 9am, sit around in Germany for maintenance, and then head on back in the afternoon. So what can you do inbetween flights?

WATCH YOUR PLANE FLY THROUGH THE SKY

JUST LOOK AT THESE SICK GRAPHICS

60687

Alternatively you can walk around the airport. One perk of being a 1%er: I can stroll in and out of security whenever I want to:

60686

Or you can go chat with the Don again

60688

At this point the tutorial finished and it kicked me out into the real game, which I guess is the exact same thing except that a.) you have to start from scratch and b.) you're competing against other 1%ers. I decided I didn't feel like making my fancy airplanes and routes all over again so I called it good for now.

Honestly considering that this has like a 90% "negative" score on Steam it was considerably more fun than what I was expecting. It's ridiculous and absurd, but I could actually see myself playing this for a few hours if I feel like being grognardy with things like load factors and buying airplane components.

THE VERDICT

Incredibly ridiculous
German
Surprisingly spreadsheety
Not really sure who the audience is?
I think it's too dense for most gamers but not "serious" enough for sim fans
Maybe pick it up in a Humble Bundle

Note: Probably spoilers.

So as Mister Adequate told me as I loaded up this game, "Basically someone turned a Stephen King novel into a video game." And you know, I can see where he's coming from with that pretty much immediately, as the first five minutes of the game involved being chased by some creepy homeless guy who wants to chop me into little pieces. Once you get to relative safety, things don't let up, as you can probably tell by this screenshot:

60707

Oh boy! I can't wait to die, die, die, die, die!

Fortunately the voice of god arrives and gives me a flashlight and a gun.

60708

To kill creepy ghost zombie things you have to use both. Flashlights, as it turns out, are pretty deadly.

60709

OH HEY JUST KIDDING IT WAS ALL JUST A DREAM! You're actually on a rinky dink ferry boat in rinky dink Washington (at least I would assume, judging by the license plates and scenery)

60710

"Honey, I think you should stop playing those scary zombie games before bed every night."

60711

Oh cool, I'm a famous writer. Gee, that must feel nice. :(

My wife has some errands for me to run. Scary places abound, even if you just want to use the bathroom.

60712

"Aww man, I just gotta take a dump."

Later we head to some cabin we rented, which it turns out is (*gasp*), also incredibly dark and spooky.

60713

My wife and I promptly get in a big fight. I'm going to presume it's because she promised me a "big surprise upstairs" and then, after showing herself off in nothing but her underwear, she told me that she is not actually the surprise and that she got me a typewriter. Since I am a man and I was actually hoping for some action, I storm off into the super eerie and not at all pleasant woods, which is clearly a great idea.

The joke is on me, because the next thing I know... ... ...? ....??.... .. ...I don't know but it involves my wife screaming and me suddenly being somewhere else entirely, and my car falling off a cliff. http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a109/Pikestaff/smiley/emot-psyduck_zps6d3d0257.gif

I spent the next hour or so wandering around the forest, shooting people with my flashlight, and running into an unusually high number of old abandoned logging camps.

60714

Seriously, I found like three all within about half a mile of each other.

The goal at this point is to get to a rickety and not at all shady :roll2 gas station in the distance, and frankly I would have kept playing until I got there except that I'm not feeling great right now and I kind of think the game was starting to give me motion sickness or something, compounding my current head cold. :shobon:

I leave you with PRODUCT PLACEMENT!!

60715

(Next up I'll have to fight spooky ghost Energizer Bunny).

THE VERDICT:

Spooky scary skeletons

So the second you wake up in some hospital you're trying to escape. Guess I'm not terribly impressed with lying around all day. Deus Ex vibes start happening right from the start, which is always a huge plus.

60781

You can heal at these little first aid kits on the wall. This amuses me greatly because upon healing your character essentially wipes out the entire contents like some sort of vicodin addict.

60782

This is one of those games where you can choose how to reply. This affects other peoples' opinions of you, and apparently it can also be a helpful tactic to make people mad on purpose. At least, that's what the game tells me!

60783

AWW YEAH RPG TIME

60784

Oh right, apparently you get bonuses from how you talk, too. So that's pretty nifty.

60785

Oddly enough, this is the point where you finally get to do some character customization (to an extent-- this isn't TES or anything). You can, however, give yourself some FANTASTIC hats.

60786

Apparently I have dual PhDs and speak a dozen languages. I am jealous of my virtual self :(

60787

Next up it's time to do a tutorial and practice shooting people, in true Deus Ex fashion.

60788

It's pretty fun.

60789

This is followed by about ten trillion years of talking to the guy in charge (for the life of me I can't figure out how to make him like me, my rep with him keeps bouncing up and down), and then the next thing I know I'm in this baller house in Saudi Arabia.

60790

I'm having a lot of fun with this game so far so I have a feeling that this is to be continued...

One great thing about AP to note is that, no matter how you play, and no matter what you do, you'll get bonuses. Be nice and sympathetic and solve problems carefully and considerately? You get bonuses. Burst in with guns blazing? You get bonuses. Stealth through it like a Stealth Bastard? Bonuses.

And Yet It Moves
Platformer/Puzzle/Casual
Steam Link (http://store.steampowered.com/app/18700/)

This is a puzzle game where you are made out of paper. Your goal is to get to the end of every level. You can rotate the screen around on a central axis in order to escape tricky situations (and get yourself into trickier ones).

60841

This fellow tells you where to go so you go where he says.

I have some of these games :D Also, I will second what Spuuky said, if you manage to get through your entire library, and he gets through his that doesn't overlap yours, I'll go through mine (what I can anyway, cause this computer lacks the power to play high end games) and do the same thing for any that aren't on your guys's. And given that my library is at 672 (653 not counting free games) I have a feeling there'll be some not overlapped xD.

As for the games, I've played 10,000,000 and it is quite great, And Yet It Moves is meh, and I rented AP on 360 and it was pretty fun.

I'm probably in the minority, but I didn't think And Yet It Moves was bad so much as uninspiring and mediocre. There were some clever puzzles, but it's still not really worth playing to get to them. I got it in a humble bundle & that's probably the best way to get it.

This is a reverse tower defense game, where you control the mobs and try to get through a bunch of towers. Your job is to keep your units safe and buy new ones.

Aquaria
Metroidvania/Adventure/Exploration
Steam Link (http://store.steampowered.com/app/24420/)

So in this game you play some sort of water sprite. You swim around and it's really comfy and cozy.

60943

Ecco the Dolphin vibes happen pretty much right from the start.

60934

You can learn songs (Ocarina of Time style), which you can then sing to accomplish varying things, such as giving yourself a shield or moving rocks around in order to explore new areas.

60935

Speaking of exploration, I feel like that's a pretty big part of the game. A story starts to unfold, but frankly all I want to do is clear out every unexplored area on the map (the map lets you know where you haven't been to yet.)

60936

There are a lot of little things to do, like collect food ingredients so you can cook them, find magical artifacts, and so on.

60937

But come on, the point of this game is exploring in a comfy and relaxing environment.

60938

It's pretty metroidvania, and I have a feeling that this game is going to ramp up in difficulty at some point if it truly is as Ecco-ish as it feels. But frankly I'm in no rush to get there because just swimming around is nice.

THE VERDICT:

Comfy
Relaxing

Archon: Classic
Strategy/Board Game/Retro
Steam Link (http://store.steampowered.com/app/65400/)

You either grew up playing Archon (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archon%3A_The_Light_and_the_Dark) or you didn't, and I certainly did, which meant that this game was a delightful nostalgia fest. Unlike many other remakes of retro games, Archon: Classic is pretty much the an exact copy original game under the hood; it's just got a shiny new coat of paint and a modern remix of the theme song (which is awesome by the way). I think there are options to let you play with new mechanics, but I just dove right into the oldschool mode and was not disappointed.

60957

(this is the only screenshot you get because, as with some previous games, this game hates screenshots and they didn't work most of the time.)

For the unfortunate among you who haven't played the original classic game, this is a board game that looks superficially similar to chess, but the similarities end there. Basically you fight for your right to own a square: every time you land on a square that is already occupied, the game switches to an arcade-style battle. Different game pieces have different abilities and some are considerably more powerful than others, but don't be fooled: if you're careful and know what you're doing, you can make a longshot matchup work for you.

There are also spells to cast (in limited numbers) that allow you to summon elementals to fight for you, revive a piece of your choice, teleport across the board, and so forth.

60956

(have a screenshot from the original amazing game in all its C64 glory)

You win by occupying all the power points on the board (five particular marked spaces), which is easier said than done because each team starts out with their most powerful piece parked in one of those slots, and that slot is always advantageous to that team (as the game goes on different spaces on the board grant bonuses to a different factions).

If it sounds complicated, it's because it both is and isn't at the same time. It's easy to learn and a delight to play - this is one classic that has certainly held up, and the retro sound effects (which I think were lifted right from the original game) and the option to play it with the old-school graphics is just icing on the cake for nostalgia-hounds like myself.

THE VERDICT:

10 out of freaking 10
Faithful remake of one of the best gems of the early 80s
FUN
If you liked the original, you should get this
If you haven't played the original I still recommend it
Come see what all the fuss is about

Aquaria looks okay. I don't think I'd enjoy it for very long, though, for some reason.

I did not grow up on Archon. I am slightly below average at chess (despite loving it as a kid) and too impatient to spend time improving myself in that regard. Other than the initial look of the board and pieces, I can assure you that Archon has nothing to do with chess! The fighting bits feel more like an oldschool platform game than anything. It's all top-down. And it's difficult to describe. xD

Assassin's Creed is an interesting series for me. On the one side, I've poured quite a bit of time into the games because they're pretty fun. On the other hand, they never quite grabbed me enough to make me one of those superfans. And despite all the time I've spent on the games, I've never actually beaten an Assassin's Creed game. Atom Zombie Smasher
Tactical/Zombies/Sort of Tower Defense
Steam Link (http://store.steampowered.com/app/55040/)

This is a vaguely tower-defense style game where you kill zombies. It's all done top down, like so:

61129

As you go along you get to unlock fun things to kill and/or troll zombies with (such as snipers, dynamite, missiles, and so forth), as well as upgrades, and your goal in every round is to get as many civilians evacuated as possible. The more you rescue, and the more zombies you kill, the more points you get.

61130

(the pink dots are zombies and the golden ones are civilians)

It's actually a lot of fun. I'd definitely recommend this one to people who like RTS and tower defense style games (it's sort of a blend of both genres, with a tiny bit of X-Com thrown in for flavor).

THE VERDICT:

Fun
Catchy music

RPG/Turn-based/Isometric
Steam Link (http://store.steampowered.com/app/112100/)

This game is an RPG and it's old-school.

61179

First off you get to pick your class. I'm choosing to be the swordsman, because come on, big strong guys bashing heads in is where it's AT.

61180

Remember when I said that this was old-school? It's really old-school.

61181

This is, like... Fallout tier.

61182

This is the battle screen. It's turn based so you and any party members you have take turns attacking the monsters.

Now there's some sort of storyline going on, but I'm mostly ignoring it as I charge into the nearest dungeon.

61183

This is followed by several minutes of dungeon crawling and killing the obligatory rats and spiders. It's nothing particularly special, but still pretty fun.

Back to the Future

Steam Link (http://store.steampowered.com/app/31290/)

Note: Spoilers.

Great scott! We've made it out of the "A" section of my Steam list and into the "B" section!

VkAVfsw5xSQ

Way back in the day before Telltale Games turned The Walking Dead into a huge thing, they turned Back to the Future into a moderately huge thing.

61254

It all starts out pretty familiar.

61255

It also turns out that I have the film script memorized well enough that when it asks me to choose the next line I can pick the correct one.

The familiarities end quickly, though, because you soon discover (through a couple of familiar franchise in-jokes) that this was all a dream and that it is 1986, several months after Doc went flying away in his time traveling train at the end of the third film. They're selling off Doc's estate so I get to look around.

61256

Turns out Doc is in TROUBLE in the 1930s, and after some shenanigans it's time to hit 88 miles per hour and see some serious trout.

61257

Doc has given himself an appropriate pseudonym so as to hide his identity.

61258

And shortly after, I get to choose one for myself, as well.

61259

Did I mention that Doc is voiced by Christopher Lloyd himself? It's pretty awesome.

61260

Doc's plan is for me to enlist the teenage version of himself to invent a gadget and bust Doc Prime out of jail.

61261

Annnnnd to absolutely NO ONE'S surprise, Mini Doc is a huge turbonerd.

61262

I quit playing not long after this - only because I was short on time, though!

THE VERDICT:

Mega fans (or anyone who grew up with BttF) will love all the little in-jokes and references
You can tell that Telltale is still "learning", some things are kind of awkward
There's a comprehensive hint system if you want it, although you can also turn it off if you don't
It's not exactly "The Walking Dead" but it's still pretty fun
Get it if you like point and click and/or Back to the Future
(come on who DOESN'T like Back to the Future)

The Banner Saga
RPG/Turn based/Tactical
Steam Link (http://store.steampowered.com/app/237990/)

So to start out with I spend about 15 minutes browsing the hundred-odd chivalry banners that come included with the game.

61315

Once that's all finished up we can actually start the game!

Right away I like how cartoony everything is. It's not a style you see often in games.

61316

OH HO HO, IT'S TIME TO FIGHT

did I mention that you are viking giants? Because you're viking giants.

61317

Basically this is a tactical RPG. You can also kill like two people at once because you're viking giants with horns growing out of your heads.

61318

SICK BURN

61319

MORE FIGHTS

There is a lot more to this game that I can tell, such as skillups for your characters, keeping everybody's morale up as you travel around, and so forth. Unfortunately I ran out of time and wanted to make this post before bed. Maybe more tomorrow if people are interested?

THE VERDICT:

pretty interesting art style
YOU ARE GIANT VIKINGS WITH HORNS
pretty fun so far
UI is kind of awkward in places
I haven't played enough yet to make a decent analysis, sorry

I only played Factions (the PVP-only one) but I enjoyed it briefly. I didn't have the heart to go through the grind, though, so I stopped pretty fast. Too much level-up/collection/purchase stuff like in every microtransaction-style PVP game. I imagine the single-player story game is good.

Rather than playing a new game today I decided to play some more Banner Saga because I decided it needed a bit more attention.

Before long I'm fighting giant... robot golem things?

61341

Fights are difficult. Your guys regularly die. Think X-Com.

Also if you run out of supplies, your guys actually starve to death.

61342

The game kindly points out to me that it is hard and that there are difficulty settings.

61343

Also, it turns out our gods are dead. http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a109/Pikestaff/smiley/rip_zps25ca20b1.gif

61344

All in all, the more I play this game, the more I like it. It's got an interesting story going on, too. I'd recommend it to fans of tactical RPGs as well as anyone who likes squad based challenges a la X-Com.

Vyk
12-22-2014, 03:16 AM
Yeah, I always got an X-COM vibe from it. And love the Bakshi art style. I bought it when it first released, but never got around to playing it. I read all the controversy about King.Com suing everyone that had "Saga" in their name, and getting in a lot of trouble with the press and general public for being a douche. And The Banner Saga boys were actively stirring the pot, and getting a lot of love for it. And somehow that satiated my desire to support their game, and I never actually played it much... Weird. I'll get around to it one day, as it seems to be very distinct. There's not much else like it out there

I just can't get into the theme of the Banner Saga. I like me a good SRPG, but there's something about the art and the Vikingness that doesn't appeal to me.

Bastion
Action/RPG
Steam Link (http://store.steampowered.com/app/107100/)

This is a game I've heard much about but hadn't actually haven't gotten around to playing yet. ^^; Fortunately, we've reached this game on my list, so it's time to rectify things.

61383

Right away the world is unique and interesting. Things drop in from the sky, and the entire story is being narrated for you by a... narrator. My favorite part about this is when you fall of the edge and he goes "And then our hero fell to his death. Nah, I'm just kiddin' ya."

61384

Soon I get some fancy weapons, like a bow and a hammer.

61385

Once you get out of the intro sequence you can start building things to give yourself swanky upgrades.

61386

Like so!

61387

Then you can fly around to different worlds in order to get more materials to build things with.

61388

And then do more upgrades!

This is how most of the game goes. Granted, I didn't play for longer than an hour (although I'd like to play more), but I found it to be pretty fun. Note that this is mostly an action game with RPG elements. For some reason I had it in my head that this was a mostly-RPG game and being thrown into a world where I had to smash things up with a machete was a bit surprising (although I liked it.)

THE VERDICT:

I'm liking it so far

Like you I've never played it (well, unlike you I guess) despite hearing a lot about it. Like, what is the point of the upgrades? Are you going around bonking stuff on the head?

Pike
12-25-2014, 09:21 PM
The upgrades give you things like either a faster or stronger weapon, faster reload or more ammo (when it comes to ranged weapons), or various "procs" like AoE damage.

You go around bonking stuff on the head but you can also pick a ranged weapon and a "trinket" of your choice. The trinkets are things like tripwires, lures to charm the enemy with, that sort of stuff.

It's pretty fun and well-made if you like going around killing things.

Batman: Arkham Asylum

Steam Link (http://store.steampowered.com/app/35140/)

This is yet another highly acclaimed game that I never got around to playing. Well, best fix that.

61436

Already 2spooky :ohdear: :ohdear:

61437

We start out by escorting Joker into Arkham Asylum. Joker's gonna joke, it looks like.

Looks like someone's happy to see me!

61439

WHAT? You mean this was a trap set by Joker all along?? THIS IS 100% COMPLETELY SURPRISING AND NOT AT ALL WHAT I THOUGHT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN!

61440

You can activate a Detective Mode, sort of like Eagle Vision in Assassin's Creed, that lets you see what you can interact with and what your goals are. Also it helpfully tells you that the poor sod who is currently being held hostage by Victor Zsasz is "terrified".

61441

61442

61443

61444

The game also lets you glide around, which is pretty great. I AM THE NIGHT.

61445

Also you can fling Batarangs around like there's no tomorrow.

61446

Oh look Bats, your friend is back! (Note how incredibly done Bats is at this point.)

61447

LEVEL UP :hyper:

61448

I can't wait to see what else Joker has got on his YouTube account.

THE VERDICT:

Just being Batman is a load of fun
Because you're freaking Batman
Fighting is pretty great because you can slow motion roundhouse kick guys in the head
At one point Bats saves a guy from certain death and then knocks him out cold
I laughed really hard
Although the grunts can all live in Joker's toxin for 15 minutes and Batman dies in 5 seconds what's up with that
Get it if you want to be Batman

Had a similar experience with Origins, to tell the truth. I just wanted to follow the main story, but the damn thing kept throwing side-quests at me left and right. I didn't even bother with the Riddler puzzles, then what does the game do when I beat it? Send me back to the city until I finish all the side-quests and trout. FFFFFFFFFF-!

Yeah, I feel like they do take a bit too much inspiration from Assassin's Creed at times. Asylum was much more focussed, but City and Origins felt the need to add tons and tons of 'stuff' in to try and pad the game and add 'value' for the completionists. It's like a film director who refuses to cut anything after the rough edit. Sure, the film is longer, but that doesn't make it better.

Having said that, that tendency is one of the only things the Batman games get wrong. For the most part they're incredible, and I can't wait for Arkham Knight.

Batman: Arkham City
Action/Adventure/Open World
Steam Link (http://store.steampowered.com/app/200260/)

You start out the game as Catwoman. It's pretty awesome. also dat ass

61498

This doesn't last very long, though, because moments later it's time to be Bruce Wayne in a brutal opening that has poor Bats all tied up in a chair and facing good ol' Hugo Strange:

61499

I manage to make an escape and beat up a whole bunch of thugs as well as The Penguin despite being tied up and handcuffed. :smug: I get my batsuit delivered to me and now it's time to seriously kick ass and chew bubblegum.

61500

My next stop is finding Catwoman, beating up Two Face but deciding not to kill him (I'm sure that won't come back to haunt me at all :greenie: ) and doing some detective work.

61501

And then it's off to flirt with Harley Quinn :flirt:

61502

Before promptly taking everyone out in a church

61503

And smashing two guys into the ground in one move. :shobon:

61504

It's pretty good!

THE VERDICT:

It's a lot like the first
Good for Batman nerds or basically anyone who wants to be Bats
You can punch guys out from behind walls and stuff

And hookshot like Link
And you get a move where you can summon bats to attack people
It's pretty great

For those wondering, Asylum is very much a Metroidvania-style game where you get increasing tools and powers that open things up, while City is more open from the start, and has a vast number of collectables to collect. As Fox and ToriJ have been saying.

Beat Hazard
Music/SHMUP
Steam Link (http://store.steampowered.com/app/49600/)

I'd actually spent about eight hours on this game before playing it for this go-around, so I'm not new to it. This is a shoot-em-up game that is set to your own music. You pick a song and try to survive for the duration of that song.

61535

Along the way you collect power-ups, points to help you progress in rank and money to allow you to buy upgrades.

61536

There are also huge boss battles.

61537

Some of the power-ups that you collect increase the volume of the music as well as your weapon's strength. If you max out both you get a message that says "Beat Hazard" and... I'm not sure what it does, actually. I think it just makes the pulsing lights on the screen more intense.

61538

And yeah, the game gets pretty colorful.

61539

Although most of the gameplay is pretty straightforward, you occasionally get bullet-hell inspired bosses. Sometimes two at once. :ohdear:

61540

Since it's a "survival" game the difficulty is largely determined by the length of the song you pick. In the above screenshot I've got two minutes left in the stupid song and am already out of lives. (I did manage to survive, though, by being really liberal with using my powerups. By the end I was out of powerups but I WAS ALIVE.)

It's a surprisingly fun little game but I feel like its biggest flaw is simply that in an age of Spotify and music streaming, not everyone has all the songs they want to play lying around on their hard drive. I kept catching myself thinking "WAIT I KNOW WHAT SONG I REALLY WANT TO DO NEXT oh wait that's on Spotify/YouTube/etc. I don't actually own it. Damn."

If they rigged it to somehow be able to hook up to your Spotify account I'd dump a heck of a lot more time into this. I don't know if that's technically feasible or not but man, I'd even pay money to buy a sequel with that feature.

THE VERDICT:

Surprisingly fun
I'll happily dump a couple hours on it when I'm bored
Best for people with big music libraries
SERIOUS: seizure warning. No for real, the entire game is about flashing lights
If you are sensitive to that kind of thing this game is not for you
Other than that this is pretty good stuff!

Ben There, Dan That!
Adventure/Point-and-click
Steam Link (http://store.steampowered.com/app/37400/)

This is a point and click adventure game in the vein of old-school ones like Sam and Max. This particular one is very indie (I think it was made by two guys who self-inserted themselves into the game), and, like many games made by very small teams, sports an interesting art style that borders on being grating.

61594

Also, welcome to Britbongland.

61595

I didn't take many screenshots of this one partially because there's not much to screenshot in a point and click and partially because a lot of the good stuff had :ohdear: swears :ohdear: that are not acceptable for virgin ears on EoFF.

Anyways you end up making an "aerial" for your "knackered telly" before being kidnapped by aliens and taken to their spaceship.

I'm kind of torn on how I feel about this game. On the one hand, the people who made it are clearly fans of the genre - shout-outs to classics exist on nearly every other screen. The game is also legitimately funny, and there are plenty of dialogue bits that had me laughing out loud. The characters aren't afraid to break the fourth wall on occasion and it's handled smartly.

On the other hand, the weird art style and similarly weird (and very repetitive music) hold it back a little, and frankly I'm not a big enough fan of old-school point-and-click to be able to put a lot of time into it.

THE VERDICT:

It's Bri'ish, innit?
Genuinely funny
Mega Indie
Suffers from indie "we didn't really have a lot of art assets" syndrome
Old-school Sam & Max diehards will probably love it
If you're on the fence, wait for a cheap bundle

Beyond Good and Evil
Action/Adventure
Steam Link (http://store.steampowered.com/app/15130/)

This is a game that I unfortunately was not able to put much time into because it was chock full of distracting graphical glitches which I'm assuming are due to running an older game on my system or something. I say unfortunately because what little I played of the game was a load of fun.

61630

Pretty much right away you're flung right into the action and an interesting world and story that has you really curious to learn more about it.

61631

KILL IT, KILL IT

61632

AUUUUUGGGHHH

Anyways, this game has a sci-fi setting but it certainly feels different from other sci-fi games, which is another neat feature of the game. It's hard to pinpoint exactly why, but maybe it's the personality of the characters (such as a dashing holographic Spaniard.)

61633

Now it turns out that you are broke and can't pay the power company, so you get a camera and can go around taking pictures of the native wildlife on your planet. You can then upload these to the museum and get money.

61634

I really wish I could do that in real life!

I stopped playing not long after that because the graphical glitches were intensifying and they were getting really irritating. I was sad to have to stop because I would have gladly played more - the world was quite interesting and engaging. Maybe I can mess with the settings later and see if I can fix it.

THE VERDICT:

Neato world

Oh man one of my favorite games ever. I'm so sad they never brought the HD version to the PC. I've looked into it and all the elitist fans are like "Why? It supports HD resolution already". But game mechanics have changed. And obviously the game just doesn't run very well on newer systems. Glad to know that before I bought it off of GOG. But the main reason I didn't buy it sooner is it doesn't have native controller support. Which I'm sure would come with the HD version. Augh. I'm sorry it didn't work well for you. It truly is a fantastic game. I need to add it to the thread Wolf made about thought provoking games. And Beyond Good and Evil is definitely one of those stellar experiences for me. I was so mesmerized by that game and absolutely enjoyed it from beginning to end. Highly suggest anyone curious about it gets it on PSN and XBLA if they can

The Binding of Isaac
Action/"Rogue-Like"/Zelda-Like, to be honest
Steam Link (http://store.steampowered.com/app/113200/)

Like many of the other games on this list, this is one that I've put a lot of time into in the past. It's a pretty well known game by this point, but for those who haven't played it, the gist of the game is that you're a naked child who crawls around in muck and basements, fighting monsters, because your mom is terrible.

61676

The controls are relatively simple, as can be seen in the above screenshot, and along the way you collect a wide assortment of items to help you on your quest.

61680

There are also a lot of horrifying bosses to fight.

61677

A lot of people call this game a roguelike due to the permadeath and randomly generated dungeons. Personally, I see this game as being like The Legend of Zelda more than anything. Between the idea of fighting monsters room-by-room (or screen-by-screen), the fact that keys and bombs make up the bulk of your inventory, and pretty blatant shoutouts like the shop design, this is basically the original Legend of Zelda with a little bit of roguelike spice thrown in for flavor.

And because the original Legend of Zelda is genius, this is, of course, all a good thing.

61678

Along the way our hero Isaac has little flashbacks to horrifying moments in his life. Such as this one, which we can all relate to.

61679

I feel like there's a lot to say about this game despite the fact that the basic gist of it can be conveyed in just a few screenshots. But basically, between the weird and grim artstyle and story and the solid mechanics, there are a lot of hours of gameplay to be had here. This is frequently regarded to be one of the best indie games to hit the market in the last few years and I have to agree. If you enjoy a challenge and a lot of action, and you're fine with a vaguely disturbing setting, then this game is for you.

NOTE: The game has since been remade (http://store.steampowered.com/app/250900/) with a new engine and various other changes. I have yet to play the remake, so this review is based on the original game.

THE VERDICT:

Challenging
Addictive
It's "The Legend of Zelda" with permadeath and random dungeons
Weird, squicky artstyle/story might be off-putting to some people
Plays solidly, good game design
Basically a must-have if you like this type of top-down action game

Rebirth added:

150 new items
4 new playable characters
New levels
New bosses
New enemy types
New endings
New challenges
New level curses
New graphics
New music
Savegames
Local co-op

The game now runs at steady 60fps, compared to ~30fps on the old one (which seemed to drop to to ~2fps when a lot of stuff is happening).

Tons of bugs are fixed, caps for number of familiars / bullets on-screen are gone, enemy AI is better... There are a lot more items that interact with other items to make awesome synergies, and the physics engine for projectiles is a lot more complex and robust. And so on.

I put 200 hours into BOI:R in the past 2 months, and yesterday I tried to play the original BOI and as good as it is (which is very very good), it's total crap compared to Rebirth. Rebirth is amazing. Also an expansion is in the works.

Bioshock Infinite
FPS/Action
Steam Link (http://store.steampowered.com/app/8870/)

Warning: Possibly some minor spoilers.

Alright, apologies for the delay. First I got busy, and then I wanted to put a little bit of time into this guy before coming to conclusions.

Basically I feel like my review for this game can be split into two separate halves. The first half of my review revolves around how this is, possibly bar none, the most breathtakingly gorgeous and visually rich game I have ever played. The first half hour of the game is a true feast for the eyes packed with utterly beautiful cinematography and aesthetics. I found myself taking a screenshot probably every thirty seconds. Here's a (very) small sample of them:

61833

61834

61835

61836

61837

61838

61839

61840

61841

61842

61843

61844

61845

This is a game world that is rich, flavorful, atmospheric, and overflowing with cinematic influences. It's like stepping right into the pages of one of those "The Art of [Whatever Video Game]" books. The entire game feels engineered to give provide maximum visual delight from every angle, and in that aspect of things, the game is an immense success.

That does, of course, bring us to the second part of my review, which is that this is a fairly standard shooter wrapped up in a (very, very) shiny skin. The controls and general gameplay are at best pretty average for the genre, and although the trappings of a good story seem to be shaping up here it all really felt like I was spending far, far too long shooting endless waves of enemies in the face between getting to the interesting things happening.

That's not to say it's a bad game - it's got a lot of great reviews, after all. But FPS games were never really my "thing" (unless it's with friends on the couch or something), and I can't really see myself putting a huge amount of time into pushing my way through this one. Supposedly the story is amazing, so maybe I'll try again someday, in the future, when I feel more in the mood for a shooter. For now, it's simply not holding my interest.

THE VERDICT:

Easily the prettiest game I have played in years
The whole game is just a feast for the eyes
Almost worth the price for the game's atmosphere alone
But I dunno it's all about shooting people
And I don't really do FPS games
If you liked Bioshock gameplay or story-driven FPS games you'll love this one
Otherwise probably wait for a sale

One of my favourite games ever, and that is despite my agreement with you that the gameplay is quite bland. Every other aspect of the game was just that good though. Hopefully you go back to it and finish the story in its entirety, you'll be glad you did.

I only picked this up and played a week or so ago and I fell in love. The art design and sound direction (both music and ambient sounds/talking) are simply beautiful. Absolutely stunning and it took my breath away. Never have I ever played a game as gorgeous as this and whoever did the art direction is a genius. The story and characters were fantastic - Booker and especially Elizabeth just felt perfect and I really liked that.

For combat, I think I agree with Pheesh. You have a couple of neat unique gameplay elements like vigors, the rails and the tears to mix combat up a bit from your standard shooter, which I enjoy a lot. However, what it really does well with all of that is give you choice. There's one moment I remember where you try to go out of a door and you're pinned down by snipers who are on a rooftop. What do you do?!

Grab the sniper rifle that's to the side of you?
Have Elizabeth tear in a couple of air hooks and swing your way up to the snipers, engaging them at close quarters?
Use your vigors! I think there's a water spill you can use to shock those foo's, or maybe you can possess one and have him fight the others?!

I think that's superb game design. Presenting the gamer a problem, encouraging them to look around for a variety of solutions and then letting them pick one that suits their style of play.

The only thing that I think irks me is the ability to only carry two weapons. I get why but then I think when you have heavy weapons with such a low ammo count as an option it doesn't really encourage me to use them. Two and a pistol would've been nice! Two, a pistol and a heavy would've been even nicer ;)

I played this a little more today (I was going to play the next game on my list but it didn't have a volume option for some reason, and I wanted to Skype Mister Adequate at the same time xD) and I am finding myself getting drawn into the story and characters. I have played this one and it was pretty nice, but I agree regarding gameplay - it's alright, but it's nothing that keeps me going. I hope to finish it someday, I have no idea how far in I am but I don't suspect it's that far in and I did really love the characters (well, character: the girl is awesome), "world" and story. But yeah, that gameplay can be boring on occasion.

On another note, I discovered that I had The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth via PS+, and played it the other day. Oh man is that game freakin' awesome fun. Wow. Eventually got through the first dungeon. Will definitely play again.

I've not liked any Bioshock's gameplay much, at best it's risen to the heights of "completely generic shooter" and normally is rubbish. I haven't honestly been too taken by the stories either. Settings and visuals though, yeah, worth it just for that.

BIT.TRIP BEAT
Rhythm/Music
Steam Link (http://store.steampowered.com/app/63700/)

Hi friends, and welcome to the BIT.TRIP block of Pike's Steam List. I've got four of the suckers in this series, and I've only played one, so let's see how things go.

BIT.TRIP BEAT works off of the premise: what if Pong was a rhythm game?

No, really. That's the game.

61887

Little dots come at you in the rhythm of various funky chiptune songs and you have to hit these dots back with your Pong paddle. A miss slowly but surely fills up your little miss bar at the bottom of the screen.

61888

Things get kind of difficult as you go on.

If the miss bar fills up, you wind up in Pong Purgatory and are given a chance to redeem yourself. There is no music in Pong Purgatory and it's actually kind of terrifying.

61889

Survive Pong Purgatory and go back to the game; fail it and it's game over for you.

And that's about it, that's the game.

Also there's a Portal level.

61890

THE VERDICT:

It's a casual game more than anything
It's fun but unless rhythm games are your thing you probably won't spend more than an hour or so on it max
Good music though

BIT.TRIP RUNNER
Rhythm/Music/Platform
Steam Link (http://store.steampowered.com/app/63710/)

This is a game that I have in fact played before and oh I love it. I just love it. It's one of my favorite "chill out" games.

In it, you play Commander Video, who I think is an alien or astronaut or something? I'm not sure. Either way, it doesn't matter, because the point is that in this game he is merrily dashing along in time to some immensely cheery music and it is your job to help him avoid obstacles and collect gold and power-ups.

61955

So you jump...

61956

And slide...

61957

And kick, and bounce, and other fun things. This is all done in time to the music and the sounds all blend together wonderfully. The song also increases in intensity as you go along.

If you collect all the coins in a level, you get to go to a fun bonus level inspired by Pitfall and other old Activision games.

61958

The bonus level, by the way, is even more difficult than the normal levels.

If you mess up in the middle of one of the levels, you are sent back to the beginning. In most levels this isn't a huge deal, but in some of longer marathon levels you will definitely regret every little mistake. Especially since these levels love to throw bouncy balls at you and you have to remember which ones to duck under and which ones to jump over. So if you start playing this game and want it to be more difficult, don't worry - it'll get there eventually.

I'm not sure what it is about this game, exactly, that makes me love it so much. It might be that the music is so happy and pleasant, or it might be the solid gameplay, or it might be the fact that even when you get thoroughly frustrated at it, you just can't hate it. It's too cheerful to hate it. It's too relaxing to hate it.

Anyways, get it. It's one of my favorite Steam games.

THE VERDICT:

So fun, so relaxing, so happy
I honestly think pretty much everyone would like this game
Definitely pick this up if you see it unless you really hate music games or something

BIT.TRIP PRESENTS RUNNER 2
Rhythm/Music/Platform
Steam Link (http://store.steampowered.com/app/218060/)

After having loved the first game, I was excited to play the second. And it turns out I was right to be excited - this is a perfect example of a sequel, a game that that kept all the best parts of the first, tweaked the worst, and added a few new things.

Also, the updated art style is gorgeous.

62072

The general playstyle to the game is almost identical to the first...

62073

Right down to the rainbows.

There are a couple of new moves added, for example, this Sonic-esque spin around a loop-the-loop.

62074

Another very welcome addition are checkpoints, which means you no longer have to worry about getting sent to the start of a marathon level for one mistake - you can go back to the checkpoint instead. It's a fantastic addition to the series.

Collecting all the gold in one stage lets you shoot yourself from a cannon into a target for bonus points.

62075

And it's hilarious.

62076

The game also lets you compare your score with your Steam friends, which so far has done little except point out to me that I will never match Dr Unne.

62078

Overall I'm quite impressed. This is a sequel that improves on the already brilliant original, and basically I recommend it to... just about everyone.

Pretty sure enemies spawn and move around in sync with the tempo/intensity of the music. More lively music = more and faster-moving enemies.

Whoops, missed this thread a couple weeks ago, so late answer.

In Beat Hazard, the enemy spawns, speed and movement are linked to your music tempo/rhythm. In particular, when the music gets near silent, enemies will also stop moving (but keep spawning because spawns are calculated on a moving window). It's completely deterministic. The difficulty setting will change how many and how fast they move/shoot iirc.
One very nice effect is that it means that if you and your friends share tracks, you can compete :D.
There are leaderboards for various categories, too.

Your ship's firing rate is also directly linked to that tempo/rhythm, meaning that in silent section, your main gun won't shoot squat.
Re: "Beat Hazard" effect : it increases firepower, adding more fire lines to your main gun.

The Shadow Ops DLC added customization of ships (you can create your won or downloaded custom models from Steam works), and different ships have different firing angles, movement speed and maneuverability.

Re: streaming. Beat Hazard supports custom radio stations (http://steamcommunity.com/app/49600/discussions/0/558751179441298059/). Spotify and the like is problematic to add for a game because Spotify and the like don't want you to stream for free without an account and at the very least listening to ads, and usually won't allow third party clients unless you pay premium.

BIT.TRIP VOID
Rhythm/Music
Steam Link (http://store.steampowered.com/app/205070/)

Bit.Trip Void is sort of similar to Bit.Trip Beat; it's not really a "bigger" game like the Runner games, instead it's more of an extended mini-game.

In this game you are a sphere that needs to collect black dots whilst avoiding white ones.

62166

You start out small, but as the game progresses and you collect more black dots, you grow bigger and bigger...

62167

62168

You do eventually get to a point where you're too big to dodge those white dots anymore.

62169

Seriously, you'll fill up the screen.

62170

And at that point hitting a white dot will make you small again, and the process begins anew.

It's certainly a neat little game although as I said earlier it feels more like a mini-game than anything. If you like rhythm or music based stuff you will probably enjoy dumping a few ten-minute stretches into this though.

THE VERDICT:

Mini-game style rhythm action
Works best with a controller
Worth getting in a BIT.TRIP bundle if you like this sort of stuff

And so that concludes the BIT.TRIP block of Pike's Steam list. Hope you all enjoyed it!

Blackwell Convergence
Point & Click/Adventure/Mystery
Steam Link (http://store.steampowered.com/app/80350/)

Well the game starts by defaulting my screen resolution to 800x600 or something, which isn't exactly the most promising start.

62255

The generic Indie "retro" look and amateur feel of the voice acting also aren't doing much to gain my favor, but then this happens:

62256

One of the main characters is a ghost  That certainly escalated quickly.

62257

Overall this is a fairly standard point and click game. There is nothing particularly new or exciting about the mechanics. You can switch between being a ghost or a human and each one can do a few interesting things, though, so that's kind of neat. I think the main draw of this game is the premise, which is genuinely interesting, because it's not often that you see games (or any media, for that matter) where the paranormal is mixed with real life and it's just a normal thing. I think the two characters are some sort of detective team and that's a pretty fun idea.

62258

This middle aged ghost thinks that he's still alive and wants to fling himself off the ledge. Your job is to help ghosts stuck in limbo to move on, so you get to spend some time trying to talk some sense into this fellow (it's not easy)

62259

You get multiple options, as well as options within options, when you talk to people. I sort of suspect that all of the options inevitably lead to the same path, though - i.e. most of the options are going to fail and bring you back to square one.

62260

Eventually the ghost gets sucked into the girl's body (I guess?) and she takes them through a portal or something? That seems to be how it works around these parts.

Not long after this my power died :greenie: So that's about where this particular incarnation of the Let's Play ends.

THE VERDICT:

Once the premise got going it actually gained and kept my attention
But ultimately you've gotta be a really good point-and-click game to keep me playing
Some of the voice acting is grating but you can turn it off
The 800x600 resolution blown up to fill your screen is kind of obnoxious
Point and click fans will like it
People who like ghosts and detective stories will probably like it too, actually
It's surprisingly interesting!

I'm glad indies are keeping point-and-click games relevant though. And its also extremely nice that they're legitimate trying. I have one of these games and Gemini Rue and Resonance. I haven't tried the Blackwell game or Resonance. But Gemini Rue is really interesting. I don't think it's going to compare to Grim Fandango, but new games from small/new developers probably shouldn't immediately have to compete with the greats from decades ago from studios who could afford decent writers and stuff. Not really saying "passable" is my benchmark. Just that they merely have to be good, rather than great, for me to feel like I haven't wasted my money. And Gemini Rue was different enough. Not fantastic, but it kept my interest for a bit. I imagine the Blackwell games would have the same effect. Sadly my life seems too fast and frantic these days for low profile relaxing games like point-and-click. I should probably change that aspect though. That mindset keeps me from also enjoying things like The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us, which are also on my Steam library :(

But hey, thanks for giving a little known newer point-and-click some attention. I know a lot of people think the genre is dead, and this may open their eyes that things are still out there if they're interested

The Blackwell Legacy
Point & Click/Adventure/Mystery
Steam Link (http://store.steampowered.com/app/80330/)

I think this might be the first game in the series, since our heroine doesn't have a ghost friend yet. Instead, her story revolves around trying to get past some punk teenager kid who won't let her into her apartment...

62363

...talking to a doctor, who happily informs her that going absolutely insane runs in her family...

62364

...and getting cockblocked by Bill Paxton anytime she tries to do anything else.

62365

"Game over man. Game over!"

The story was actually shaping up to be fascinating and more interesting than the first Blackwell game I tried. Unfortunately I got frustrated after trying several things and failing to figure out what I was supposed to do or click next. I think I just suck at point and click games in general.

The gameplay, from what I can tell, is the exact same as that of Blackwell Convergence (the last game in this series that I tried out.) So I think it's just the story that's different!

THE VERDICT:

Blocks That Matter
Puzzle/Platformer
Steam Link (http://store.steampowered.com/app/111800/)

"A puzzle-platformer indie game that is full of little nods to other games."

Although from first glance this sounds pretentious at worst, and "just like every other indie game" at best, this is a surprisingly sharp little puzzle game that is a lot of fun.

62661

This game features a couple of famous block-mancers, namely Notch (of Minecraft fame) and Alexey Pajitnov (of Tetris fame). You are a little robot that they've invented, and your job is basically to go around, well... collecting Minecraft blocks and turning them into Tetris blocks. The game has two different interfaces. The default one...

62657

And the block-building one.

62658

You can only build your shapes in the form of Tetrominos (Tetris shapes), which throws an interesting twist into the puzzle aspect of the game. Your goal, then, is to use blocks get to the portal at the end of each level so you can rescue Notch and Alexey, who have apparently been kidnapped (presumably by EA or Activision or something.)

62659

As you progress, you learn that different blocks do different things, and also get upgrades.

Oh, and there are Big Bads that you have to run away from. It's pretty tense because you have to build as you go.

62660

There are also a lot of little secrets that you can collect. These secrets unlock bonus levels and reference other Blocks That (Have) Mattered in video games, such as the Companion Cube or Mario's ? blocks.

In short, this is a surprisingly fun game that you'll probably have trouble putting down. One of the better indie games I've played lately, for sure.

Braid
Puzzle/Platformer
Steam Link (http://store.steampowered.com/app/26800/)

Up next for your consideration I present... an INDIE PUZZLE PLATFORMER (who would have guessed?)

So yes, Braid. If there was a poster child for artsy indie games than this would be it. Most people who haven't played it have at least heard of it, for better or for worse.

62880

You know from the start that you're in for an art game. To the game's credit you can play right from the title screen - no waiting around for opening cutscenes or exposition.

Granted, that's because all the exposition begins on the next screen, and boy, is it wordy.

62881

Time and Forgiveness? What?

62882

Oh, okay. Each book is going into huge detail about... I don't know, author filibuster (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/AuthorFilibuster), I guess.

ANYWAYS, now that that's out of the way, we can continue on to the gameplay. The game's art direction and music is actually really relaxing, and all in all it's a standard Mario-style platformer that involves jumping on bad guys and collecting items.

62883

The primary gimmick of the game is the ability to reverse time. This means that if you die, instead of restarting the level, you can just back up a few seconds and try again. This is actually nice and keeps the game from being overly frustrating, a problem that I feel many other puzzle-platformers fall victim to.

As you continue along, the time control becomes less of a life-saving device and more of a part of the puzzle, because certain objects (denoted by sparkles) are immune to the effects of time. This makes manipulating time an integral part of the gameplay, in a way that's difficult to explain but really quite ingenious. It also keeps Braid from being Yet Another Indie Game With One Minor Gimmick, a la Fez, for example. Because the gimmick, in this case, is actually interesting.

It also does tie in to the story (or Author Filibuster) about the rhetorical question "What if we could redo our mistakes?" So that's pretty admirable.

Anyways, Mario references abound.

62884

62885

I seem to recall a Donkey Kong reference from the last time I played, too.

Ultimately if this game falls victim to anything it's its own sense of self-importance. This is just me speaking, so others might have a different viewpoint, but when I play a puzzley-platformer I'm not looking for a grand, thoughtful essay about the meaning of life. I just want to play the damn game. Braid seems to want to stuff the aforementioned author filibusters in whenever possible, and although I'm sure some people really like this aspect of the game, I just find it to be superfluous.

TLDR: If you don't mind Braid's ego, and/or you can look past it, you really will find an interesting game here with some ingenious puzzles. Brace yourself for a couple of (fortunately largely skippable) philosophy dumps, though.

THE VERDICT:

Kind of full of itself (to no one's surprise)
But the gimmick is actually really interesting and well done
Probably a bit of a polarizing game
The art and music is really relaxing, though
Worth a look if the concept of time manipulation intrigues you

I freaking loved Braid. It was like stumbling into anime for the first time. I thought mario had gotten stale. And playing a mario-like with a weird and intriguing story

It reminded me of watching Memento or Donnie Darko. Just trippy and I was always interested in what came next. And I adored the music and art style. To me it was an artsy fartsy story game with good gameplay. To everyone its its a platformer with good gameplay and a useless story. But if I just want gameplay, there's always things like Escape Goat (or whatever was available back then. N+ or 'Splosion Man or something)

So to me it filled the same void as Cave Story~ But I totally get why people hate it. It's definitely not just trying to be a game. It's attempting to be more. And for some people that's okay, for others its annoying

I'm pretty indifferent to Braid. I liked some of the puzzles, and didn't really like others, and the non-gameplay elements barely mattered at all. It's just a slightly-below-average indie puzzle game overall, I think.

I think I beat Braid in like 3 hours. And that's probably mostly because puzzle platformers weren't really a thing to me at the time. Especially ones involving time manipulation. I think speed runs do it in like 20 minutes. So it can probably really be done in an hour or so. Its not a very long game. But don't force yourself or anything

Breach & Clear
Turn-based tactical/Squad
Steam Link (http://store.steampowered.com/app/266130/)

aka X-Com: Less Brutal Edition, although let's face it, basically any turn-based tactical game that isn't X-Com or one of its spinoffs (like Xenonauts) is X-Com: Less Brutal Edition.

The game throws you into everything right away, letting you pick a squad...

65018

and then customize different guys in your squad...

65019

until you have four different guys with job classes and names of your choosing. (I just went with the default names they gave me but there is the potential here for glorious X-Com-esque customization.)

65020

This is a turn-based tactical game similar to, well, X-Com as well as Frozen Synapse and other things in that genre. You have one turn to position your guys and then tell them what direction to face - you get a white cone indicating everything in their field of vision, so you can see exactly what they are able shoot at. Things like cover do matter, and your guys have a small handful of special skills depending on their class. However, the game automates shooting for you, unlike certain other squad-based tactical games.

65021

All of your guys move on the same turn, which really gives me Frozen Synapse vibes more than everything. Once your guys are in position you hit the "breach" button to execute the turn. This gives you the ability to plan their actions as a group rather than individually.

65022

After a successful mission you get experience based on how successful you were (I've yet to determine the variables for that - I think the time you take has to do with it?) and you can distribute skill points among your guys.

65023

And that's the game. It's easier to learn than it sounds (or looks), and as the missions are short and quick it will probably infect you with One-More-Mission Syndrome. At least, it did for me. :shobon:

It's certainly not the deepest thing in the world and you aren't going to find ~serious hardcore tactics~ here but if you want a grab and go squad based game that's based in the real world then it's worth a look. Save it for a sale, though - its full price is $14.99 and I wouldn't pay that much for it.

THE VERDICT:

If you like turn-based tactics/squad-based tactics games then this is a decent enough entry
It really doesn't do anything new but there's really nothing wrong with it, either
Pretty easy to learn
Good for picking up and playing for twenty minutes
Probably worth picking up on sale if you like this kind of game

Breath of Death VII
Old-school JRPG Parody
Steam Link (http://store.steampowered.com/app/107300/)

This is a game where you are a skeleton. In fact, the story is that basically everything is undead.

65045

It's old-school. It's really old-school. I mean, seriously, look at this picture:

65046

It also likes to make fun of itself, and games in general.

65047

Anyways, I clear out the quick initial cave and walk out into the bright sunlight of... oh my good lord what is this anyway? Dragon Quest? FF1?

65048

The town comes with everything you expect. An inn (which restores your mana - HP is automatically restored after a successful fight), an item store...

65049

...and, well, this guy:

65050

Pretty soon I run into this chick who is really overly excited about this adventuring thing.

65051

And she forcefully joins the party. No, really.

65052

I'm not sure what she is, exactly. Some kind of mermaid snake thing?

65053

TIME FOR THE OBLIGATORY SHOT OF OUR ADVENTURERS GAZING AT THE LANDSCAPE *cues up appropriate music (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CX7kKUQtW-Q)*

65054

I get to dig my way through my first major cave, which is full of undead things (like the rest of the game). Our hero has some words of wisdom about, well, RPG heroes:

65055

BOSS FIGHT :ohdear:

65056

One interesting thing this game does is that after every turn, the enemy gets 10% stronger. So the longer the battle takes, the more horrifyingly intense it gets. Suffice to say the boss gets to something like 170% power and it was TERRIFYING but we managed to take him down. Whoo!

Sage words from Sara:

65057

And we reach the next town.

65058

...I get that reference. :shifty:

Overall this is shaping up to be a game with a lot of charm and some interesting mechanics that I haven't seen before. Don't go in expecting Straightforward Generic JRPG parody #384 because there are some neat things you can do. For example, after a character levels up, the game gives you two choices of new skills or perks that you can pick. This allows for considerable amounts of character customization after you're several levels in. Throw in an interesting combo mechanic as well as the "Enemies increase in power" thing I mentioned earlier and there's enough variety here to keep even the most seasoned veteran interested.

Also yeah, all those dumb video game references. I see what you did there, devs!

THE VERDICT:

You should probably get it if you like old-school JRPGs from the 80s and early 90s
I mean seriously, it's $2.99, you should probably get it anyway
It's funny
It has some interesting new mechanics I haven't seen before in this type of game
The boss music is great. A+

The game is about 5 hours long. Also, she's a ghost =/

It's a good game but very limited in some ways, which makes sense for the first game ever from a 2-man dev team. I enjoyed it because I love Dragon Quest. Now is the time for my obligatory reference to the game they are currently making which was on display at E3, Cosmic Star Heroine. It's going to be so good.

This means you'll undoubtedly get to Cthulhu Saves The World later in your backlog. Actually not THAT much later, if you ever get done with B.

Bridge Project
Simulation/Physics/Building
Steam Link (http://store.steampowered.com/app/232950/')

This is a game about building bridges. Straightforward, right?

65702

WRONG.

Oh so very wrong.

Actually this is a game about watching your bridges fail in grand, cinematic fashion.

65703

65704

It's also about sending trains to their doom, if you're sadistic and like that kind of thing.

65705

("Bridge Failed". Really?)

Basically this is a physics game that assumes you already know how to build a bridge. There is no help. You're on your own. Oh and also you have limited funds and resources. Good luck.

THE VERDICT:

Brothers - A Tale Of Two Sons
Adventure/Puzzle
Steam Link (http://store.steampowered.com/app/225080/')

I really had no idea what I was getting into when I loaded this up, since I'd forgotten how I wound up with this game to begin with and I didn't know anything about it. What I got, however, was a beautiful little atmospheric puzzler that really feels like an interactive art piece more than anything - and not in the obnoxious "Braid" sort of way.

65752

This game is pretty and atmospheric; like a storybook come alive. And yes, there is a story. It's sparse and simplistic, but that's the point. One neat thing that this game did was make it so the characters speak a fictional language. And since there are no subtitles, the entire story is told through inflection and gestures. But it's really well done.

65753

On to gameplay: this is a game where a controller is very much recommended, and for good reason: the entire game depends on controlling two different characters simultaneously, and this is somewhat more intuitive with a controller. Most of the puzzles revolve around character co-operation or taking advantage of the (very few) differences between the two brothers. In this way, a lot of the puzzles feel fresh, such as this one where I had to dodge an angry dog by "ping-pong"ing his attention between the two characters.

65754

As you progress across the story, you come a cross a helpful giant troll or something, who proceeds to add some new puzzly mechanics to your gameplay while he's around.

65755

And then I wound up in some steampunk Dwemer ruins or something.

65756

Anyways overall I was happily surprised by this game; I've played so many indie puzzlers in this list so far that I was kind of hoping this wouldn't be Yet Another Indie Puzzler but this game pulls it off better than most of the others. The puzzles feel organic and intuitive, so instead of sitting around scratching your head forever you can work them out pretty quickly and then be on your way. And there are a lot of little touches and characterizations to the brothers that fit in with the story and give you a surprising amount of feels.

Also you can pet a cat:

65757

THE VERDICT:

Gorgeous and relaxing to play
The perfect game for if you want to lean back and chill with a controller
Brilliant way to tell a story (IMO)
Neato mechanics
Short and sweet

Blood Bowl - Legendary Edition
Sports/Turn-based/Board Game
Steam Link (http://store.steampowered.com/app/58520/)

It's American football.

But dice-based.

And with Warhammer.

Basically if you ever wanted to play a game of handegg with orcs, dwarves, and elves, you should probably get this game. And even if you thought you didn't, you should probably get this game anyway, because it is freaking addictive.

65786

Also, terrible humor throughout.

So this plays differently to more action-oriented sports games; it's turn-based and dice-based. You're gonna roll for pretty much everything you do. Kind of like D&D.

65787

It sounds obnoxious or complicated, but it's really not, and even though the tutorial makes it all sound kind of difficult it's actually very intuitive to play once you get into a real game. It's much like actual football, except that you can punch people and kill people. Because Warhammer. (You can try to rez them, but it doesn't always work.)

An immense variety of races are available, including lizardmen, vampires, skeletons, and eldritch horrors, so the game essentially gives "fantasy football" a whole new meaning.

65788

TLDR I was kind of assuming I was only gonna mess around with this for a half hour or something but instead I played it for two hours and I'd still be playing it right now but I have to do boring stuff like eat dinner. This is really fun and addictive. Seriously. I love it.

65789

And yes, I did skip backwards in the alphabetical list because I bought this recently and I figured, why not, let's cover it for completion's sake.

THE VERDICT:

Great stuff for Warhammer, football, and/or tabletop fans
Heck, it's great stuff even if you're not
There's a lot of depth here (Campaign mode, story mode, etc.)
Seriously you can be pretty much anything like you can have treants on your team
