Book or movie versions (even though they're soooo different!)

Who is your favorite? Why? What do you think about their extended or changed roles from books to film?

Obviously my favorite is Eowyn. Obviously.

Are we just doing LotR?

I don't have a problem with what they did with Arwen, only that it came at the expense of Glorfindel. I thought Liv Tyler did a great job and, this is going to sound really weird coming from me, but the costume designers did an amazing job with her. As a visual spectacle alone it helps to create the image of the wonder and beauty of the Elves, and I think it's good they kept up a love story arc. Though some of her appearances were certainly shoehorned in for the sake of it.

Eowyn is a great character but I don't think Miranda Otto did a good job of potraying her. A lot of her line delivery is slightly wooden or forced. I find myself finding it hard to believe her, I guess. Much preferred the book version. Off the top of my head I'm struggling to think of any main characters - Legolas, perhaps? - who were as ropey as her.

Galadriel is incredible, of course, and Cate Blanchett was wonderful. I like her less so in The Hobbit movies though. Like, I always kind of interpreted hearing her voice in your head is really your own thoughts, fears and nagging doubts bubbling up in your mind, she is sort of like a mirror that makes you see into yourself. Not Galadriel literally having psychic powers and being able to telepathically communicate with people. I dunno. I just felt my interpretation seems a bit more magical and mysterious and the second is just beating you over the head with it. Again, like Arwen, I did feel there was some unnecessary shoehorning in LotR. Just keep her in Lothlorien and only have her pop up at the White Harbour (and Minas Tirith, which they didn't do in the movie) as she was meant to. Actually, scratch that. Show her smashing Dol Guldur if you want more Galadriel action, that would've been amazing - though I know we're going to get the Guldur smashing 1.0 in the Hobbit so whatever. Just please no "Hello Frodo how's Shelob? Get up you lazy bugger."

Rosie Cotton is, of course, a babe.

Rosie Cotton IS a babe. Seriously, the woman who plays her is goooooorgeous.

And nah, you can talk about any of the women in any of the books. I just specifically stated LotR because I haven't read any of the others, but feel free!

Galadriel is the winner here. Did not like film Eowyn at all.

Legolas was the best lady of the movie. Orlanda Bloom.

They should have had Tilda Swinton play every elf the movies.

Oh man, I thought Galadriel was horrible in the first movie. Her whole "now you temp me with the ring" part was completely cringe-worthy. I still don't like watching it after all these years.

Books: Éowyn
Films: Éowyn

Wow there weren't many women. I'm with hero re: Galadriel - she was neat in the books but I really didn't like the portrayal in the films.
