Is it the best Trek? It might just be the best Trek. Let's talk about it.

Favorite episode? Mine's Trials and Tribble-ations, of course.

It's definitely damn good. I don't know if I have a favorite episode.

I'd say Far Beyond the Stars and In the Pale Moonlight are my favourite. Trials and Tribbleations is cool as hell, but it's never really anything more than a cool nostalgia Madden fanboy freakout.

Also, everything involving Garek is pretty fucking sweet too. Especially the one where he goes nuts and plays a game of cat and mouse with O'Brien on Empok Nor.

Nah man. Nothing will ever beat TNG. Though I still have to watch DS9 binge-style in sequence. Thanks to this thread I may do just that.

Loooove DS9, and yes I think it might be The Best Trek, largely because rooting it in the station meant they had much more opportunity for long-running arcs and stuff.

Plus, there's all those derpy Ferengi episodes, and those are always great!

Best trek is between this and TNG.

Hard to say if I have a favourite episode. I was a fan of "In the pale moonlight" myself but it's become such an overly frequently given answer, almost always given for this series, I'm inclined to say something else. Plus it's about as "un-Rodenberry" as the entire show ever got, as great as that episode was in and of itself.

I really liked the political stuff at the end of season 2.

so I just watched Far Beyond the Stars and WOW, I might have a new favorite episode.

I was coming here to say Far Beyond the Stars. I thought that episode was genius. So nerd-tastic, fan-pleasing, but with depth, good acting, andnhumor it succeeds at avoiding straight gimmickry and being a legitimate episode in the series.
DS9 is highly underrated, and it's good to see so many of you appreciate it.

I tried watching it when it was in its early years, and TNG was still out, and I was too much of a TNG fanboy. Something about the stationary life just didn't jive with me. I loved how it fit into the show though. Same timeframe as TNG with a handful of cross-over characters, and even some of the TNG crew basically retiring to DS9. So while I never really got into it the way it probably deserves, I appreciate that it existed, and of the few episodes I watched and enjoyed in the beginning, I think the one where Q goes there to "awaken" another Q, and they play games chasing each other across the station and stuff was probably the one that amused me the most. I should go back and give the series a go one day. One of my best friends absolutely adores the show

Never seen it because no Data

Never seen it because no Data

No Data = No shion

But, there's this guy:

60793

A fucking shapeshifter! And data's spiritual twin!

Also, best non-intellectual humor in the whole series comes in the form of this guy:
60794

Also, also, DS9 has the absolute best cast of love-to-hate characters in all of Star Trek. I've never loved and hated a character as much as Gul Dukat. One of my favorite characters from any show of any genre ever. Marc Alaimo's the fucking shit, man. First Romulan of TNG, first Cardassian ever, and also SHION, ALSO, he was in a TNG episode where he played poker with Data and fucking spoke French! What more do you want!?

And for the show to be renamed The Data Show

It made me sad that they "retired" Data

It was inevitable. Brent Spiner wasn't going to look like Data forever.

My favorite scene comes right in the first episode.

Odo
The man is a gambler, and a thief.

Quark
I'm not a thief!

Odo
*You* are a THIEF!

Quark
If I am, you haven't been able to prove it for nine years!

xD

Oh, the Odo+Quark interactions are great. I love how Odo comes to like Quark somehow, despite his deviously scandalous ways.

Great character interactions on this show. Character-driven sci-fi = win.

It certainly isn't my favorite, but I had a good four day marathon of the show last year and . . . I liked it quite a bit. I expected to find it rather boring, seeing that most episodes were focused on the station, but most of the main cast were interesting and Sisko ended up my favorite captain so far (though I haven't seen Enterprise, so that might change).

Q: "You hit me. Picard never hit me."

Sisko: "I'm not Picard."

Yuuussss >: D

To anyone who tried to give DS9 a shot and then sort of stopped: the first couple of seasons are slow-ish, so especially if you're jumping in directly after finishing TNG it's going to pale in comparison. I promise that it gets better and that it will grow on you. Right around the time you hit season three or four things just start CRACKING.

I love love TNG (and also TOS) but I think DS9 might just be my favorite. It's soooo good once it picks up.

(I of course don't blame anyone who picks TNG is their favorite, both shows are solid gold)

Indeed, but what boggles my mind is that they basically replaced him with another Data, played by the same actor. It served no purpose other than to reboot the character. It didn't spare the actor anything other than the fact that it was the last TNG movie (and probably will remain so), but that has nothing to do with Data

I feel about Worf the way shion feels about Data.

So it's surprising I never watched DS9! I intend to eventually...

That's a large commitment to get to the 'good' parts. Is there a list of necessary season 1 and 2 episodes to get the just of it for season 3?

As in, can you just skip to season 3 and know wtf is going on? Not really, although I think you'd get it all figured out again eventually. There's a lot of setting up in seasons one and two.

Pike

I'd recommend watching it all if possible but if not there's a decent guide on which episodes are okay to skip: http://www.letswatchstartrek.com/ds9-episode-guide/

(I'm not sure why it stops midway through season four. Presumably anything after that is worth watching :monster: )

A decent episode guide overall, though I disagree with some. Q-Less is worth watching just to see Sisko punch Q.

DS9 and Sisko both start out kinda slow. I thought Sisko was very overrated until he couple of seasons in when he seemed to start showing/developing his acting chops (coincidentally, right around the time he grew his goatee). It became well worth watching, and is my second favorite Trek. TNG is still my favorite, in large part due to its better cast (Picard > Sisko, Data > Odo), but I understand why some people like DS9 more.

I agree with the above, but where do you factor in Tasha Yar? You want a short haired chick you pick DS9. In fact, DS9 had two short hairs better than Yar in Kira and Dax 2.0. Then there's Wesley Crusher, the little annoying bastard. The "children" on DS9 were much less annoying.

When it comes down to it, TNG didn't have Dax. DS9 had two.

Overall, DS9 has a better cast. Nicole de Boer (Ezri Dax), Terry Farrell (Jadzia Dax), Colm Meany (Miles O'Brian), Nana Visitor (Kira Nerys), Arman Shimerman (Quark), Aaron Eisenberg (Nog), Marc Alaimo (Gul Dukat), Andrew Robinson (Garak).

TNG has two giant standouts in Patrick Stewart and Brent Spiner, but overall it's pretty clear that DS9 has the best cast in the history of Star Trek.

I will not stand for leaving out Levar Burton from a list of standout cast members on TNG.

but

goddamn the guys who play Garak and Gul Dukat are amazing. Also Odo.

And that's what, to me anyway, sets DS9 apart from the others. The supporting cast, the bad guys and middle guys are all well written and get a ton of development throughout the series. Some of the best acting from any Star Trek came from those extra guys in DS9, which was what made the show deep and compelling and brilliant.

Also, I'm sorry V22, of course we'll add sir Burton to the short list of TNG standouts.

I'm not sure if I can pick a favorite actor from DS9. They're all so brilliant. I do have a soft spot for Rene Auberjonois, aka Odo. Because he brought us this:

EcyhVHrmlMU

(close your eyes and imagine Odo singing this)

Which seems to be the case for pretty much every Star Trek after TOS. TNG had the same slow start with only a couple of good episodes in the first two seasons before it started taking off in season three. Even Enterprise started to come into their own by season four, but then it got cancelled. Interesting how it always seem to come to the same two numbers.

My mom loved this show back in the day and never missed a beat. I never had much of a desire to sit down and watch it. Maybe when I have nothing else I want to stream on Netflix.

As a pretty big fan of TNG from the old days, and not having watched them in years, I can totally agree with this. I tried restarting the series on Netflix recently, and had to watch episodes in 15 - 20 minute bits when sitting down to a meal, before I moved on to more entertaining things. The beginning is interesting and sometimes entertaining, but not at all very engaging or gripping or anything
