I feel we should reopen the riddle thread. The idea is easy. You make a riddle about a part of the game, and if someone guesses it, they can give the next one. Every day you can add a hint to make things move along.

Win count:

Bubba - 7
Metagloria - 4
AK - 3
FFIX Choco boy - 2
gruntace101 - 2
Loony BoB - 2
Jinx - 1
Chionos - 1
Sephex - 1
Karifean - 1

I feel this should be called The Revived (and quickly deceased) All New FFVII Riddle Thread. I loved this thread though so hope other people participate!

Poo's guess makes the most sense but I'll wade in with The Midgar Gate to Sector Five... in the hope that my alternate wording will steal victory.

Au

worst part of FFXIII, hands down

Dat Matt

AU stands for "Gold" on the periodic table
Sexiest Member in FFVII is obviously "Vincent Valentine"
You are "Begging" for money
Spamming "Death" on the Neochu was the worst part of the worst part of FFXIII

So the correct answer is "Gold Vincent Valentine begs for death"

No further entries are required.

I'm thinking it's in the Gi Cave. It's underground, the boss is a fire boss. I looked up the treasure you can pick up there, and one of them is the Fairy Ring. It's circular and protects you. So I'll guess that.

I'm sure I'm going the wrong direction with this, but it seems like solid reasoning.

Ding Ding Ding! Oh I love that sound! The answer is indeed... Fire Ring.

This doesn't cost a lot of money as it's free
Obviously it's a free item and the location (Costa) is written in this line

Down underneath where the sunshine can't reach
This hints that the location has a lot of sunshine and the item is in a basement.

In a roundabout way, it will keep you warm
The item is round and this hints it is fire-based.

A super-hot curry brings your bum hole to harm
Having a pooh after a hot curry can be painful. This is affectionately known the UK as a 'Ring of Fire'.

I'm trying to think what the cure would be for a Mako Soldier. Is it relevant that "Mako Soldier Cure" is a capitalized?

Hmmm... I'm struggling on the Saltza line. It is set out like an echo but why is that one different? No idea what it means either.

Edit: Hang on, Saltza is ringing a bell. Isn't there a kid that tries to say Shinra and says Saltza? NO! Chinra and I think he tries to say Soldier and says Saltza? Aagh, I don't know!

Correct! Good job metagloria! May have to make the next one a bit trickier.

Aunt Sarah is a fertile one
Aunt Sarah is an anagram of Sahara Nut. Fertile is a reference to breeding.

She can help the two young lovebirds
You use the nut on two Chocobos.

Though she is drier than a testicle in the desert
Desert = Sahara. Testicle = Nut

It's all yours, metagloria.

My main function? I guess, to drain HP.
But to see what else I can do, bring me...a shrubbery!

Racking my brain to think of what techniques drain hp. I'm sure there are a few in the game, the majority performed by enemies.

Now the second line must be a reference to Monty Python and the Knights who say Neee!

My first thought was Magic Hammer enemy skill but that drains MP.

I need to give it some thought as I can't come up with an answer yet. Hmmm...

You're correct in identifying the Monty Python reference, but that fact is just an homage and not integral to the answer to the question. That is, you don't need to cross-reference FF and MP to come up with the answer.

Masamunemaster

Bubba
01-15-2015, 01:12 PM
So the shrubbery doesn't hint towards anything in the game? I thought the answer could be found in a forest or something. Also, I thought it might involve a Knight of some sort due to the Python clue.

Also, I don't think there is any Python enemy in this game so I don't think it's that. Nobody called Monty, is there?!

The only clue I can work from at the minute is the HP Absorb clue. That being the case I'm gonna hazard a guess at Red XIII's Blood Fang limit break as it drains enemy HP. I don't see how it fits in with the rest of the riddle though.

Some good stuff here. You're on the right track with your hazarded guess!

1) I should point out - and this is my fault, in retrospect - that I didn't mean "drain HP" in the FF sense of drain, i.e., absorb. I just meant to cause damage, in general.
2) You could answer this riddle even if you had no idea the shrubbery thing was a Monty Python reference. So the word "shrubbery" might be relevant.

Hmmm... I'm struggling with this. So are we looking at a Limit Break? Or is it specifically an attack that drains HP?

Bubba
01-20-2015, 03:36 PM
Oh yes, sorry. You did say that it just causes damage.

Right, I don't think the first line indicates what type of limit break it is, just that it causes damage.

The only limit break I can think of that has a connection to the word shrubbery is Yuffie's Landscaper?

A landscaper is someone who trims grass and such. So yeah, my guess is Landscaper.

come and grab the snacks
this will be the best show of 1997
of course something must source this
but what is it?
This is the part that gets me confused. You mentioned Bubba was on the right track with the snacks/show and the guess of the cinema footage in the mansion (btw, since you mentioned wondering how to get this: visit the mansion basement after Cloud/Tifa spend time in the Lifestream and I think the footage appears, it's actually a memory not cinema footage though).

When you say he's on the right track, it makes me wonder if you mean the other footage moments in the game. There are, of course, the tapes in the Snow Village, and probably a few other footage related things. Then there is the footage of the parade, which is probably quite relevant to what you're saying about it being the best show of 1997 or something.

I also wonder if we're supposed to be referring to the cinematic event itself, or the thing that is used to obtain said show, as you say "something must source this, what is it?, suggesting that we are actually asking about what it is that is used to obtain said snacks and/or show.

The burned video reel Bubba guessed is a good one, I'd have never thought of that.

Galuf

The burned video reel on the game over screen!

omg no!!!!

YAY finally someone got it correct well done
the snacks bit refers too getting snacks in a cinema.
best show of 1997 = FF7
ofcourse something must source this= video reel. because video reels were used to a thing which projected the images onto the bigscreen in the cinema.

This makes me think of someone counting, funnily enough. There at a few points in which counting is a thing. It could refer to to the marching section in Junon, killing enemies in general... it does remind me of those military marches though.

Go ahead, why not once more?
Obviously something you have to repeat more than once. This kind of implies that it's something you might enjoy doing or are required to do to gain something.

Sorry, you're all a stinky bore
This is line that's confusing me. Just trying to think of a point where odour or smell becomes a factor. Also, who is a bore and for what reason? Though that word may have been used to keep the rhyme going.

jinx is the answer Fat chocobo ( joke i know you havent made a riddle yet)

Bubba
01-27-2015, 08:41 AM
Hahaha, dang.

The first part is an obvious reference to laughter. There are many moments of laughter in the game so it will be difficult to narrow it down to just one. Also Heidegger and Scarlet are very well known for their unique laughs. However, I feel it is unlikely to be them as theirs is a laughter of a very different kind. Heidegger's laugh is more like "Gya ha" and Scarlet is more like "Kya ha".
The word "dang" may have been said by a few characters so I'm struggling to narrow it down. I think the most likely candidates are Barrett and Cid. Cid may say something like "Cloud would go and do some dang stupid thing" or Barrett might say "Dang it, Cloud! You spiky-headed &*%$£!!" I think it more likely coming from the mouth of Mr. Highwind though.

Okay, give me a little bit to come up with a new riddle.

The first part of this line is a clear indication that more time is required. More time for what? A reference to more time before Meteor hits? Possibly... The assault on Mako Reactor One and the countdown before escape? Not sure... The thing it reminds me of the most though is the section when Cid and Cloud are trying to obtain the huge materia from the rocket. Cid keeps asking for more time to think of the combination while you keep guessing.
The last part is in relation to a riddle. I don't recall any character speaking in riddles particularly. Some of the waffle that Sephiroth comes out with could be considered cryptic. It could even refer to the location of The Key to the Ancients as the clue to its whereabouts is "in a place even sunlight can't reach". A clear riddle if ever I saw one.

So to sum up, the main clues are laughter, Cid, huge materia in the rocket and The Key to the Ancients. If you put all those elements together, the answer becomes clear.

Is it the Buster Sword?

Sephex
01-27-2015, 09:03 AM

This sounds a lot like a key item that you would get near the start of the game. Maybe something from Wall Market like the Silk Dress or something. Once you've used it at that point then it becomes useless for the rest of the game but still remains in your Key Items.

The last line sounds like it's a hint as to which key item it is. The only thing I can think of is when you "force grey" something you might dye it. Is it the dyed wig you get from Big Bro at the gym?

It's safe to say this one's a bit obscure
An island devoid of both window and door
A double crossing you could easily ignore
Still, best avoid that level four

Overanalysis:

First line doesn't really help, other than pointing out that it's obscure. Which, this is a riddle thread, so it's not like the answer's going to be Cloud...

Second line suggests an island of marginal notability. On the world map? In an area? Is "devoid of both window and door" a subtle hint at Wall Market? (I doubt it.)

Third line sounds like somewhere you visit twice in the course of the game, maybe?

Fourth line...level four...others have attempted to connect this to character level (L4 attacks) but maybe it's stage level or something else geographic. Can't think of any other possible reasoning for it. "Best avoid" means it's either detrimental to the character, difficult, contains tough enemies maybe?

After much consideration, I have concluded that the answer must be Eblan Castle from Final Fantasy IV.

Sephex

Aeris's level 4 limit break Great Gospel? You have to do some doubling back and such and it's really not worth the trouble because you don't get much use out of it.

Not a great guess, I'm thinking. Just something to keep BoB from giving hints.

My guess is Cloud's dream sequence in the lifestream.
-It is obscure because it is in his subconscious.
-"...devoid of both window and door" once again subconscious
-..."a double crossing..." Cloud discovers the truth about his past.
-It is easier to avoid issues than to confront them?

This is way too philosophical to be correct!

Loony BoB
01-30-2015, 10:04 AM
Nothing correct so far (although chionos, like Sephex, is sort of on the right track...).

Bubba
01-30-2015, 10:24 AM
Yeah, I think the level 4 clue is key. It might refer to the enemy Mu who you fight and it uses that against you. The only place I've seen him crop up is around the chocobo farm (quiet Sephex) which doesn't really fit with any of the other clues.

Although saying that, I'm pretty sure you fight him in the battle arena in one of the rounds. It might actually be the battle arena as you have to cross to get to the main platform in which you battle. It's definitely an island devoid of both window and door.

My guess is the Battle Arena at the Golden Saucer.

Loony BoB

It's safe to say this one's a bit obscure - Could have written this as "It's Safety say this one's a Bit obscure" but that would have been way too obvious. So that line was a bit obscure - just like the island.
An island devoid of both window and door - Well, it's an island with a cave - no windows or doors here.
A double crossing you could easily ignore - You don't have to do that weird ice cube hopping crossing there and back if you don't want to. You can easily ignore this part of the game entirely.
Still, best avoid that level four - But perhaps best not to avoid it because the Safety Bit you get on the other side defends against Level 4 Death.

Wow, it took me 2 months to remember I made this thread.

I'll be sure to pay attention now. The first reply was correct though. I'll keep a win count in the first post.

So the answer wasn't the Chocobo Farm?

Bubba

Oh crap, it's my go. Sorry, completely forgot about this.

This sounds easy in my head but you never know with these things.

Woman is all kinds of crazy?
Unsure where she is though
Taking over, they're
All up in your face
I prefer the friendlier alternative

Getting Yuffie?

Bubba

Not getting Yuffie, no.

Loony BoB

JENOVA and/or Scarlet seem like the obvious options for "Woman is all kinds of crazy", so I'll throw their names into the guess hat.

Bubba
02-19-2015, 11:20 AM
Not Jenova or Scarlet

The first two lines may be a little misleading so I'll clarify straight away. The "Woman" doesn't refer to any character or NPC in the game. Or anyone in real life.

I see you Bubba, surreptitiously spelling out WUTAI with the first letters of each line.

Sounds to me like it has something to do with Yuffie and Elena being strung up on the face of the Da-chao statue...but that doesn't fit all the lines so I still don't know.

Karifean
02-19-2015, 01:10 PM
It almost sounds like it's describing the Turks and their actions in the Wutai sidequest. Explaining to the party about Da Chao, dealing with Don Corneo, forming a truce with Cloud.

It sounds like you're describing the events at the Honeybee Inn to me...

Good spot, Metagloria!

Yup, the answer is linked to Wutai. Nothing so far is correct though.

The multi-faced boss in the pagoda?

Aerith's Knight
02-19-2015, 09:52 PM
Is it the room of cats in Wutai? Where later you find Yuffie?

Loony BoB
02-19-2015, 09:57 PM
Ooh, I think it will be. It explains the crazy lady thing. Crazy cat lady (from the Simpsons and general real life people) isn't there, but the cats certainly are.

Good call, the room full of cats does seems to be it.

I think meta nailed it. Godo fits all the clues.

How is a woman whose head rotates not crazy looking?
Unsure where she is because she changed faces.
Taking over might refer to them rotating, one face taking over for the other and line four explicitly mentions face.
The "friendlier alternative" might refer to the gold face which just cures and casts mini and sleep, which are friendly compared to Trine, Bio, Beast Sword, etc.

Edit: nvm, the friendlier alternative too obviously refers to dogs instead of cats. Dangit. Sorry meta, tried to back you up! Godo fits all the clues, though. So it's really a double riddle.

A great combined effort everyone but Aerith's Knight has it!

Woman is all kinds of crazy?
As BoB pointed out it's a reference to crazy cat lady
Unsure where she is though
There isn't actually one in the game but you can imagine her living in this house
Taking over, they're
All up in your face
You literally cannot move in that place for those pesky felines
I prefer the friendlier alternative
As chionos pointed out, I'm more of a dog person
I also snuck in the location with the first letter of each line.

AK, the floor is yours!

Thanks Bubba.

Alright, time for some action!

Beaten and bloody,
No chance for respite.
Woe to the unprepared,
Prepare to fight!
Dedication or planning,
you'll need for this.
The story puts up a wall,
And you can't fall,
into the abyss.

Apart from Godo being a dude. :smash:

Except Godo transforms into his version of Asura, queen of the Eidolons. :doublesmash:

AKRIDDLEEDIT: The wall reference makes me think of Demon's Gate, but I don't know how that fits the rest, specifically the abyss reference.

Well AK's riddle acronymifies to BNWPDYTAI, so that's obviously related to the answer.

Gonna go with ...or maybe the whirlwind maze where you have to run across and either time it right or battle, but you can't actually get knocked off.

I make my riddles too easy for you guys. He's got it.

Beaten and bloody,
Just after the fight with the dragon
No chance for respite.
Immediate fight after that 'boss' fight
Woe to the unprepared,
If you're not the at a high enough level to beat him, you're smurfed. No battles you can level on.
Prepare to fight!
Dedication or planning,
you'll need for this.
If you're underleveled, it requires some force of will all right.
The story puts up a wall,
Literal wall, Demon wall.
And you can't fall,
into the abyss.
You can't fall down the clock to escape. Not anymore.

The riddle is yours chionos!

Oh, well crap, wasn't ready to be all riddly.

I'm sure I'm going to make this about something that someone's already riddled recently, but oh well. If I were BoB, I'd make a master list of all the topics that have already been covered. :colbert:

I'm going to make this real easy so we can get this back into someone else's hands.

Planted for a fallen memory
It's fair to say it's in the story
A shattered weapon lottery
And super sticky inventory
An image asks you to continue?
Final resting place a church
Or did it find another venue
In a business district perch
While its church is renovating
Twelve Gilgamesh is hating
From angel who is irritating
To the man precipitating.

The flowers from the church in sector 7?

Planted for a fallen memory
The memory of Aertih's mom
It's fair to say it's in the story
A shattered weapon lottery
And super sticky inventory
The flower you have to give to tifa?
An image asks you to continue?
Aerith's ghost image later in the game?
Final resting place a church
We do see her there last, except for the ending
Or did it find another venue
In a business district perch
You could have bought a flower from Aerith that came from there.
While its church is renovating
Twelve Gilgamesh is hating
From angel who is irritating
To the man precipitating.
No idea.

Buster Sword?

Planted for a fallen memory
I'm pretty sure it's planted in the ground at some point to commemorate Zach.
It's fair to say it's in the story
Well, definitely.
A shattered weapon lottery
Lottery because it seems to go from person to person, almost whoever wants it gets it. Also shattered perhaps due to how it splits up or something?
And super sticky inventory
Impossible to get rid of the Buster Sword from your inventory.
An image asks you to continue?
Is it on a Continue page somewhere? Dunno.
Final resting place a church
Probably at the end of Advent Children.
Or did it find another venue
In a business district perch
While its church is renovating
D:? Dunno.
Twelve Gilgamesh is hating
Gilgamesh has a Buster Sword in FFXII but it has a mark on it that means 'fake'.
From angel who is irritating
To the man precipitating.
D:? Dunno.

Actually, this line because it is the symbol in the coliseum for broken attack in the handicap reels.

Impossible to get rid of the Buster Sword from your inventory.

It's the weapon on the New Game/Continue screen, aye.

It's in the weapon shop in the business district in FFIX. The church in that district is being renovated. I like to think that FFIX exists in FFVII's future and the church being renovated in the business district is actually sector 5 church. The sword got relocated to the weapon shop during renovation.
Twelve Gilgamesh is hating
Gilgamesh has a Buster Sword in FFXII but it has a mark on it that means 'fake'.
From angel who is irritating
To the man precipitating.
D:? Dunno.
According to BC, before Zack, Angeal Hewley had the sword. I find Angeal irritating.
Cloud is the man precipitating. It's a pun. My bad.

Yep, gj BoB.

Crap, that's the second time I've guessed Buster Sword and got it right. Now I have to prepare another riddle. What gives!? Lemme think on this.

And it's confirmed in Crisis Core that Angeal had the sword first, yeah. You get it from Angeal in the game.
