View Full Version : Things that bug you in games

So I've been playing though The Last of Us (which is one of my favourite games on the PS3) but there are things about it that bug the hell out of me, for instance, has anyone noticed how loud the footsteps are... I mean I would be walking along and all I hear is thud thud thud, unless I am in crouch mode, which means going along at a much slower pace.

So I turn to you guys to see if you have any pet hates like this, and for those of you who didn't notice how ridiculously loud the footsteps were before and do now because I posted this... sorry >.<

Nothing really like that, but I do get mad when games have more story than gameplay (except in certain cases, like RPGs). Last of Us being one of those games. :monster:

Come on, I just want to reply to the thread.

*pace around bedroom* How about now?

smurfING GODDAMN LOADING SCREENS, JEEZUS

I have difficulty with games beyond the PSX era because of this. It's just sloppy game making, sloppy, sloppy sloppy.

At least the makers of the first Tekken game put a game on their loading screen. T_T Where are ya on that, game industry!?

God damn simpletons.

Namco has a patent running for loading screen minigames, that's why.

When someone is like "follow me" but are a million times slower than you. Or even "Kay I'll meet you there" says the NPC, who just stands there or walks slowly. Despite that they will ALWAYS ARRIVE BEFORE YOU. You can teleport, they will be there first. No clue why this bugs me so much but it does

I prefer when games have an easy setting, but I can forgive if they don't so long as the game isn't impossible. What I do hate is when they say its easy and it isn't. I shouldn't be getting my butt handed to me by anyone on easy mode except maybe a few final bosses. I shouldn't have to level grind for several hours on easy mode

Also games that don't give you enough money to do anything with

Patent expires next year, I hear tell.

Also, I'm not a big fan of timed underwater escort missions.

Armor for female characters. It's so bad. A metal boob breast plate would KILL YOU. It would direct a sword into your heart. It's so stupid. It looks stupid. I'm killing dragons and monsters and orcs and trout. Give my female characters decent armor. If a game does this, I like it far more. I know it's silly to worry about the aesthetics like that but seriously, it's so impractical. Some games have blood effects. I always think that half the blood isn't from my enemies but from myself because of my own horrible wardrobe choice.

I'm OK with loading screens so long as they give you something to do, like when you go through a time worm hole thing in XIII-2 or something to read (XIII) if not I just whip out whatever book I am reading for a minute or two.

When someone is like "follow me" but are a million times slower than you.

A million times this, in MMO's its kinda understandable (in case of lag) but in an offline game there is no excuse.

This annoys me to absolutely NO end. It STILL pisses me off when I see Kayle in League of Legends now; she used to have a chestplate, but then they stuck a goddamn boob plate on her instead because, hey, let's sell this character's sex more than her character! Same thing with Lux. And Leona.

As for my contribution to the thread, probably the thing that annoys me the most in gaming is when I am handed a character who's ability to actually survive in the world I SEVERELY question. I'm not the brightest guy by any stretch, but if you are doing things that make me feel intelligent then something is wrong with you and I instantly and absolutely hate you. Haaaaaaaaaaaaaate you.

And because these characters show up the most in RPGs, I know I'm stuck with them.

For hours.

Sometimes I leave people dead in my party as an act of futile defiance, hoping the game will apologize to me and remove them so I can get back to enjoying the game again.
I also find myself lost in caves for hours on end, trying to hide from the plot that inevitably circles around these characters I hate so.

I third the poor armor designs for women. Hello, do you see Joan of Arc over here with barely anything protecting her? I didn't think so. Jesus Christ.

Another thing that bugs me is when there's a platform or something you can see your character able to jump over, but for whatever reason the game doesn't let you get up there. It's just like "No, you're not getting up there. Smurf you!"

I thought of another one, when you are on an escort quest, get half way through (and he conveniently needs to be spoken again) to advance through the next stage and you forget and run off ahead killing everything between you and the next check point and stand there... like a lemon, until you remember you need to speak with him to get him to move his ass *glass at Thrall*

Characters who say the same things over and over because the game designers are too lazy or cheap to get them to say more than just 10 phrases.

The worse is NPC's that only have 2-3 phrases and say it throughout the game. Basically Assassin's Creed's "I'LL HAVE YOUR HAND FOR THAT" or Skyrim's "THEN I TOOK AN ARROW TO THE KNEE." Really because you told me that story before 10,000 times.

People who camp. Stop camping. I will grenade you.

Little children on Xbox Live who act their age. You're too young to be playing games like Halo. Run along now before I spank you with my shotgun.

Awesome guns that are too expensive for me to buy in Borderlands but are timed so by the time I do get the money it's no longer available in the shop. fffffuuuuuuu

Oh, god. This. All of this. I was just playing Buffy the Vampire Slayer for Xbox the other day and it had this exact problem. The vampire males kept saying "You can't win, Slayer. There's only one of you, and an endless supply of us." The girl vampires kept shouting "Chick fight!" and Buffy kept reusing the same lines. Eventually even the game got sick and tired of it and I lost the sound that contained characters' audio.

It bugs me that people who can flip tanks can't handle a guns recoil. Here's liking at you master chief.

A real big annoyance is when you need skills to do simple stuff like jumping, and guarding for instance.

Let's add another real quick shall we? When you equip new weapons in games and it doesn't change the look in battles, or when carrying it around.*cough*the legend of dragoon*cough*.

I just thought of another thing I really hate -- when turning up the difficulty just makes you do less damage and makes the enemies do more. This is really annoying in Skyrim, where I'm NEVER in danger of being killed on max difficulty but it takes FOREVER to kill enemies. I wish they got smarter or had new attacks or . . . something. >.<

Vyk
01-04-2015, 06:52 AM
Yeah. Oblivion was even worse. There were actually quests that were unable to be completed due to them thinking that was how you manage difficulty. I forget the specifics, but in some dream world you had to fight minotaurs, an the equipment you're given couldn't cut it against them. I can't remember if they regenerated too fast, or if they were immune to the damage output at that difficulty or what. But I remember either they couldn't be damaged, or it'd take literally 3 hours to cause enough damage to matter, or something along those lines. It was wrecked. Totally ruined my playthrough on "hardest" difficulty

Rez09
01-04-2015, 05:29 PM
Ohhhh, that regeneration. It took me forever to kill Hircine's stag because of that crap and damage reduction. >_<

I eventually had to break character and make DoT poisons to kill the damn thing. D':

Not having enough save points between challenges in the interest of 'difficulty'. It's one thing to have a challenging task that requires repetition to get better every time, but once I get through that task I don't want to have to do it again and again while I figure out the next 'challenge'.

One thing that really bugs me is stringing several challenging boss battles in a row with no downtime. If I die at the second boss then I have to go back and beat the first one again and that is annoying as smurf because I already spent 20 minutes on that stupid thing. That's why I love the advent of autosave.

Terrible follower AI. I think of this because I just did the Temple of Darkness in Tales of Symphonia, but I also got permanently stuck emulating Secret of Mana very early in the game because I went around a wall, my follower didn't, and the screen wouldn't let me go back. (And I state saved. Okay, that was my fault.)

Also, sneak levels and/or stolen-weapons levels. No. Let me use my freaking powerful weapons and run straight into the face of death!

Pumpkin

Its not a major complaint but when you have like 6-10 people and 3-4 fighters and you can't switch them out and if someone dies or your whole party gets KO'd the other 3-7 people are just like standing around I guess?

And I second the long times between saves. Give me some saves gosh darn it

So I'm done playing and run to the save point or whatever:
I open the menu, go down to save, select memory card slot/save location, and then select the actual save spot.
And get this stupid message: DO YOU WANT TO SAVE? Why yes, I would love to save. That's why I did all the above!

Seriously I hate it. I can't do it in a tight spot even when I REALLY need to, I mess it up way more than I'd like to admit, and why the hell can't it just be forward+up+hit instead?

In that case you press hit shortly after pressing forward+up instead of pressing them all together.

I low kick most of the time I try to execute it in front of an enemy.

Fight-stick? Or any joystick? I have a hard time getting used to mine, I bought for Street Fighter 4, but I have to agree that it feels way more precise. But I have a hard time making a conscious effort to BE precise in the heat of battle. I'm not that much of a button masher, but I do mash. I know the moves. I just mash them until they work. Rather than what the term implies, people who just hit everything and go crazy on the controller. But you can't mash out moves on a joystick x_x It's probably worth getting used to though. I did do shoryukens 90% more effectively (as I too have problems doing them on purpose in the heat of battle, especially in a corner). But that's mostly because I have to do them 90% slower on a joystick lol

Randomized item collection in Zelda, mainly.

Like collecting rings in Oracle of Ages/Seasons, and a couple of the Pieces of Heart are also random.
Collecting ship parts in Phantom Hourglass. Why can I never find hulls for any ship set? Or even complete one?
Random figurines in Minish Cap. It wouldn't be that bad if there weren't so many entries. I 100% completed this once... never again!

Way to screw with my need for 100% completion, Nintendo!

Bad checkpoints. Oh good god this has probably become my biggest pet peeve in the past year. I do a TON of challenge runs, so when a game decides that I need to go like 5-10minutes back before the area/fight I died at... it gets frustrating. I die a lot in my challenge runs (that's kind of the point of them), so when stuff just becomes tedious to the point where I no longer want to be creative it becomes a huge issue. I've abandoned quite a few challenges because of this.

I've thought of another one. Horribly unnatural conversation. It tends to go either overly vague and cryptic, or TMI.

Examples:

Natural conversation:
Joe Badguy: So did you finish preparations on the cannon?
Bill Henchman: I did.
Joe Badguy: Good. We don't want to run in to any trouble like last time. Oh, and give John Evilbro a call. I think he'll be helpful against Hank Hero.

What some games do 1:
Joe Badguy: So did you prepare IT?
Bill Henchman: I did.
Joe Badguy: Good. We don't want and INCIDENT like LAST TIME. Oh and call HIM, he might be useful against YOU KNOW WHO.

What some games do 2:
Joe Badguy: Did you prepare the cannon that we have been working on and are planning to use to destroy the home village of Hank Hero because he has opposed us so many times?
Bill Henchman: I did.
Joe Badguy: Good. We don't want another incident like when Hank Hero foiled our plans the last time by catching us off guard, sneaking in to the base, and disarming the old cannon. Oh and call John Evilbro. You had amnesia and John Evilbro brought you here to us after watching you wander the desert, which is how you came to this EvilCorp in the first place. You've felt indebted to him since. He might prove handy against Hank Hero, who is our enemy since he wants world peace and we want world domination.

There's an inbetween guys :stare:

I had a problem with shoryukens and tatsumaki's and the like when I was younger but I learned that a Shoryuken is just simply: Forward, Down, Forward, Punch. You don't even need to slide your fingers across the d-pad as the command list graphic would have you do it. You could even try chicken pecking it with your index finger as practice and you'll get the muscle memory for it eventually!

My current bane in fighting games is doing more than one consecutive half circle directional input in mid-air, just to do a character's special attack, which has prevented me from using one of my favorite King of Fighter characters, Leona, in any serious battles.

Oh my goodness this, I think this might be the reason why I could never get into Blazblue because almost every characters move set feels like some weird special move only combo which involves multiple Hadoken/Shoryuken motions that I just don't have the patience to learn.

Ugh good gracious!

It's hard to think of an excuse for overly complicated button inputs (when there are other characters who are simpler and just as effective) other than to be a dickhead to the fans that want to play as said character. Moves like Shun Goku Satsu, Neo Deadly Rave, and even QCB,HCF inputs are perfectly okay but anything past that is just stupid! In my opinion.
