New PS4 Exclusive "Project Code Z" Teased

Square Enix have revealed a teaser site for an upcoming PS4 exclusive, titled "Project Code Z". There's not much to go on at the moment other than a couple of images which gives us a vague hint towards what we can expect. More information is due to come to light at the Tokaigi Japan Game Party 2015 which is taking place in a few days time on the 31st January. Be sure to keep an eye out!

Z must be the "in" letter at the moment. H1Z1, Day Z, and now Project Z. Of course it's probably just a temporary name, such as Project Natal (Kinect) or Project Morpheus (PS whatever). Square Enix were talking about revealing a new console game that "isn't a remake" a while back, so maybe this is it. Guess we'll find out on the 31st.

Whatever it is I don't think it will be a big budget, AAA game. The artwork behind the "Z" looks kinda hand drawn, and makes me wonder if Square Enix might have taken inspiration from Ubisofts Child of Light. That's would be fine by me!

Pre-rendered backgrounds are actually making somewhat of a comeback these days, spanning all types of game budgets, from Project Phoenix to The Black Tower and especially Obsidian doing some really interesting techniques with the upcomingPillars of Eternity (http://www.shacknews.com/article/78649/project-eternity-video-shows-off-dynamic-pre-rendered-backgrounds). Square Enix already uses them for Chaos Rings on Vita/Mobile and the Bravely games on 3DS, so I have to think this will be a little more involved, being on PS4. Which would be awesome, since having an army of artists tackling pre-rendered backgrounds allows you to spend more time thinking about everything else in the game, which is basically how Final Fantasy VII came out the way it did.

I don't think I've ever heard of either of these games. But upon investigation, The Black Tower looks flippin awesome!

Well, poop. Upon further investigation, apparently the project died and the developer moved on to a game called Catyph and is working on a remastered version of their first game

Here's hoping this Project Code Z is comparably awesome

That's my point. Though now some are hoping Sony gave them the rights to make it because it's a PS4 exclusive. It's amusing what people will come up with despite little evidence supporting the matter.

Spelunker (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spelunker_%28video_game%29) is a platform game that began in 1983 and was part of the inspiration for Spelunky.

As far as Square announcements go this one doesn't completely suck donkey balls. A strange pick for hyping up a PS4 exclusive as people would have expected something more "next gen" (lol @ people who still has expectations for Square), than something that looks like it should be on the 3DS, but why should Square Enix start making sense now?

I just watched the trailer for this and it doesn't actually look that bad. The characters look plainly generic, yet somehow cute in their own Mario-esque way. With that said it's not something I'd play personally, but I could actually see Square Enix making a lot of money off of Japanese PS4 users here via microtransactions.

So many great games coming this year as well. GTA Vice City, Final Fantasy XI. Metal Gear Solid 2 looks amazing as well, so I'll probably enjoy playing this until those come out at the end of the year. =D
