View Full Version : Sequels worth experiencing a subpar original for

I've recently started Muv-Luv, and so far it's pretty average at best. It has a lot of what I dislike about anime culture, and overall it's not something I enjoy beyond maybe getting some amusement out of how silly it is.

The VNDB vote stats on it are rather average as well:

But then why am I even putting up with it at all?
Simple, it has a sequel called Muv-Luv Alternative, and the vote stats on that one speak for themselves:

Yeah. That's reason enough for me to put up with Muv-Luv original for now. But it got me thinking, is it worth the time to sit through subpar titles with the promise of then being able to fully appreciate and enjoy an outstanding sequel?

For me, I'd say so, yes. The promise of anything potentially on-par with or surpassing my current favorites is motivation enough for me. And if Alternative lives up to its hype, I'll gladly recommend others to go through Muv-Luv to then be able to experience Alternative, even if the original stays as unmemorable as it is right now.

Do you agree? Or is it not worth your time to be possibly bored for up to a few dozen hours before you get to the really good stuff?

(I would've posted this in General Gaming, but it does very much apply to books/movies/series/etc. as well)

I'm sure some people around here could argue the case for XIII-2 on this thread. However, it really depends on how sub-par you felt XIII was because it still got generally good ratings from most ends despite the divisiveness. Still, I've heard from many that XIII-2 was way better than XIII (but then I've heard some who think the opposite, so yeah).

Even though a lot of people dislike 2013's Man of Steel, I'm hoping that 2016's Batman V Superman is a sequel worth experiencing despite Man of Steel's shortcomings. :)

Crap, I didn't even realise this was in The Lounge. Silly me. I'll think on the film front, not certain off the top of my head if I've bothered with sequels after a bad original.

Most superhero films have a superior sequel, but I probably wouldn't say that the first movies are subpar.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance was worth it

Actually I can think of a lot of vidgames where the sequel is considerably better than the first - I wouldn't say any of the first games are subpar, however. Just not as good as the second (or third, or whatever)

I'm sure there are movies/books that fall under this category but I can't think of any right now.

Baldur's Gate is kinda this. While the original isn't really bad, it aged much worse than the sequel. Though I can't agree with people saying you should jump straight into II because you'll really miss out on a lot.

I am now slogging through FFXIII because the Lightning Returns gameplay looks awesome to me and I'm really looking forward to it.

Diablo II over Diablo I.

To Love-Ru Darkness over To Love-Ru and Motto.

Okay I just spent a few minutes trying to think of the best one and I think I've got it.

Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan

RIP Leonard Nimoy and Ricardo Montalbán.

Assassin's Creed II

also a sort of reverse example, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. The first Mortal Kombat movie was just kind of bad. The second one hits that sweet spot of being just the right sort of awful that's really fun to watch.

I'll just throw Phoenix Wright Justice For All out there. It's not really bad per se, but you do absolutely need to read it to enjoy Trials and Tribulations, which is just WAY better.
