Given Square's (justifiable) propensity to milk the FF cash cow for all it's worth, they've forayed into all manner of non-RPG genres with their beloved characters. Final Fantasy + fighting game = Dissidia. Final Fantasy + rhythm game = Theatrhythm. Final Fantasy + ??? = Record Keeper.

So where's Final Fantasy Kart?

Obviously karts would be a stupid idea. But you know what wouldn't? Airships. Let's walk through an idea of what this game might look like.

The story and setting could recycle a good chunk of the lore from Dissidia: all the worlds of the FF games are brought together for an epic struggle between Cosmos and Chaos. Except instead of just plucking a few characters out and putting them in Dissidia-world, entire FF universes – all characters and worlds – are summoned into a massive galaxy. Maps could be scaled-up, detailed versions of the FF overworlds.

Each gameplay event would combine straightforward aerial racing with strategic combat. Your airship crew would consist of four characters from the FF multiverse, who would provide different benefits and skills. In some events, you would be racing against 5-7 other airships toward some destination. In others, you would be racing to collect crystals that appear randomly at various points on the map, possibly having to battle other airships for the right to collect them. In still others, boss-like levels, you would be engaged in simple airship combat with some enormous foe such as Bahamut, Deathgaze, Ultima Weapon, or Evrae, with the battle combining chase elements with combat elements.

As stated before, the composition of your party would have a major impact on your airship's abilities - either in movement, combat, or both. Balthier might give you a 15% speed boost because of his pilot skills. Vivi would be able to blast enemy ships with magic spells. Aerith would be able to shield the ship in protective magic. Yuna would be able to summon an aeon to assault an enemy craft for massive damage. Kain would be able to jump to an enemy ship to sabotage their equipment. Cid would be able to repair your ship on the fly, thereby recovering from damaging attacks. Irvine would be able to snipe enemy ships. Mog would increase the distance at which you can collect crystals. And somehow these characters, as well as your ships themselves, would be able to level up, because Final Fantasy.

This sounds like a sweet idea to me. How you would you alter/improve this concept? Would it interest you as an FF fan?

The Invincible (airship from ff3) is a secret kart and is by far the fastest.
