Thank god you didn't pick the drama club social link because her story is gut wrenching and sad. Something about the Sun Arcana always being depressing... even Tatsuya from P2 is generally a gloomy and depressing fellow.

Yeah, the yellow color didn't do this game any favors for me but it could have been worse. Yosuke kind of goes back and forth in the plot. His social link was largely aimless, same with Chie but he's an amusing guy even if he wasn't my favorite member of the team.

Well now I'm curious about her social link

She has to come to terms with her father who abandoned her as child but now wants to reconcile because he's dying of cancer. It's pretty depressing.

I just learned you can get the cooking the lunches thing wrong and I haven't got any wrong so yay I can cook! Not that I've done very many. But I thought it would just lead to a different dish if you did it differently

Also I hate that some scenes don't have subtitles. Can I change this? Because I often play while sharky is watching something or sleeping and I have to put it right up to my face to hear it and it is very annoying. One of my game pet peeves

Sorry haven't been updating this too much. I'm in September and doing Naoto's dungeon

I liked the music from the 8-bit boss, that was a cute touch. Most of my relationships are progressing alright. I do very much like how much easier the game is in this one. I hardly ever need to use Persona's so I just have a party of the ones I really like! So far that is Alraune, Kikuri-Hime, Sarasvati, and Jack Frost. There's probably some more I'll add but I am keeping some room so I can get some more from the dungeons and fuse them. The four I keep around keep pretty much all of my needs covered anyway!

I love the outfit changies

Oh, okay :)

How are you liking Rise as your navigator? While I was annoyed by Fuuka's Dull Surprise tone, I personally found Rise's commentary really enjoyable. I think Laura Bailey has an amazing voice.

Pumpkin

I don't mind her like I did Fuuka, although I haven't exactly been enjoying it either. Just kinda... there. But I do really enjoy her voice and she's also been in a few other games I've been playing recently!

*Takes an interest and reads entire thread in one go* ... I must hand it to you guys for making me wish I had a physical copy of either P3 or P4 to get back into it. A pity when I had a passable emulator the computer with the save files on it died before I could finish P3, hard to get back into things after losing 60~65 hours of progress. Regrets aside, I'd like to offer a few of my thoughts, hopefully without derailing the thread overmuch...

Persona 3 struck more of a cord with me via the darker story, and the delightful Eldritch Location that is the Dark Hour. Most of the Social Links were quite satisfying... Until I remember being forced into dating status at the higher ranks due to playing as a guy. Truly sad that Tartarus grew so repetitive, as I could only go through so much Social Linking before needing to balance it with a round of dungeon crawling. The 'professional' sort of vibe I got from the party in as a whole was refreshing.

Persona 4, Dear Azathoth so much yellow.... and a bit too optimistic for my liking most of the time. This may simply be because I couldn't fully play through the game like P3 and learned most of it from less personal sources, but the character development among the party seemed inferior to P3. Despite this the Shadows of the playable cast (except Shadow Kanji with his ridiculous behavior) were a thing of beauty to me, the manifested Shadow Archetypes of the characters is something I hope to see more of as the series continues.

I apologize if this is the wrong place or time for this question, but has anyone here played Persona Q?

Pumpkin
07-09-2015, 06:09 AM
It's a general Persona discussion thread, so bring up anything Persona you'd like, or even give us updates of your progress while you play if you want :D

I haven't played it because it seems a bit too dungeon crawlery for my taste but I dunno. I might try it out one day

After dredging up my save files for PQ it seems I never finished a Risky Mode run. However I did finish the P3 side on Hard Mode in about 80 hours with an average lvl range of 70~73. Along with killing a few of the optional bosses such as The Reaper and Elizazeus Hm, time to finish P4!Risky... without the NG+ benefits.

But it's not Laura Bailey :G

I am now in November right when Nanako was kidnapped. A few social links maxed out.

I have ended up liking Nanako much more than I did at first. I can see why she's so popular now!

Something I don't like is we have had two adult women making uncomfortable advances towards teenagers, one of them a teacher at the school, and it's treated as funny. It's not funny, it's creepy and it's disturbing and I wonder if it would have been treated as comedy if it had been reversed genders. It may have, I dunno, but either way it's not in the least bit funny to me. Might be working at a sexual trauma center where I've seen serious cases like this. Don't mean to be a buzzkill but yeah, it's very uncomfortable for me.

Other than that I am having fun, although I am also running out of steam. But unlike P3 which I liked playing but doubt I'll ever play again, I'm pretty sure I'll end up playing this one again.

Fynn
07-10-2015, 05:54 AM
Huh. I never really thought about Kashiwagi that way. Now I feel bad for finding her funny before, because you're right :(

Anyway, you wouldn't BELIEVE the amount of fighting on the internet there is about where Kanji is gay or whether Naoto is trans. It doesn't help matters that there is no official confirmation on either.

Pumpkin
07-10-2015, 05:57 AM

I think Kanji is bisexual from one I've seen. Sexuality is a wide spectrum and someone can very easily fall in between rather than being completely one way or completely the other. I've wondered that about Naoto but I figured it was not the case because it came across to me like it was less about being the wrong gender as in how she feels mentally and inside, and more about being the wrong gender because of professional reasons. But who knows!

Fynn
07-10-2015, 06:01 AM
Well, IMO Kanji isn't gay. He might be bi, like you said, or anywhere else on the spectrum, but I think his shadow and insecurities don't actually stem from him questioning his sexuality, but rather traditional models of masculinity (which is something I totally relate to, which is part of the reason why Kanji is my favorite). I think his sexuality is moot and that he's just a kid confused about gender roles.

And yeah, I'm pretty sure Naoto is cis (after beating her shadow she does seem to embrace the fact that deep down she's a woman) - it's all about society's expectations to women and men on a professional field.

Mirage

in a way, naoto and kanji are two sides of the same coin.

Fynn

in a way, naoto and kanji are two sides of the same coin.

You mean with regards to societal gender norms?

Mirage
07-10-2015, 07:12 AM
Yes. Naoto feels like her life as a professional detective would have been easier if she wasn't a woman (and that might be been an accurate assessment, although it might also have a bit to do with the fact that she is like 16). Kanji feels that his interest for the family business clashes with him being a guy.

I always felt that they were introduced around the same time for a reason. They show an interest for each others (well, kanji does anyway) before even joining the investigation team.

Fynn
07-10-2015, 08:34 AM
I think it's a theme for all of the characters, really - dealing with societal expectations. It's just that Kanji and Naoto deal with those regarding gender and sexuality.

The only Persona games I've played is Persona 1+2. Both were pretty interesting but I haven't dedicated too much time to finishing them. Persona 1 was excruciating and Persona 2 had the highest damn random encounter rate I've seen since Fallout 2, FFII, and FFV. But yeah I like them. One thing that was interesting about Persona 2 was summoning new Personas. Though I saw it as a bit complex at time. But luckily they improved the negotiation system from Persona 1 and made it far better.

Hm, seems I forgot about this thread after getting lost in Wonderland for the while... This is merely the two scents of an outside observer, but I agree with Pumpkin that Kashiwagi is rather creepy. P4 has a disturbing sense of humor sometimes.

Getting back into PQ was easier than I thought, I even remembered which 1st labyrinth sub-personas learned the elemental resistance skills. Despite everything that Risky Mode can throw at me I'm happy to say the Queen of Hearts is dead; along with several dozen of her adorable evil minions... She was a screamer in the end. Honestly the entire first Labyrinth feels like a case of being so weird it's good. Though I wish that PQ didn't have to go down the path of simplifying some character's personalities to the point of acting like they'd lost about one-third of their IQ.

Anzai
07-11-2015, 07:07 AM
Yup, Fynn has summarized everything horrible about PQ Akihiko. Honest confession... I spent most of my P3 side run of PQ debating rather or not to Mercy Kill Akihiko before his protein-related brain tumor claimed the remaining scraps of his mind. Seriously I can only recall Akihiko mentioning protein twice during the events of Persona 3.

Now I'm having the same problem with Chie with her thought patterns being reduced to meat obsession, even if she retains the basic essentials of kicking things to death. Perhaps I'd miss Chie less... Sadly all attempts to abandon Teddie inside the Labyrinths have failed.

Brace yourself Pumpkin, too many feels with a side order of doom are no doubt inbound.

Pumpkin
07-11-2015, 07:17 AM
It's a shame they've apparently flanderized the characters in PQ. But I do think it would be interesting to see the two casts together.

So question about the P4 murders

When they're thrown in the TV and the fog sets in, their shadows kill them. But the first two victims showed up dead outside of the TV. So how do they get outside of the TV after they died in the TV? I feel like I'm missing something or misunderstanding something important here

Anzai
07-11-2015, 07:28 AM
Some of them made it through relatively intact, worst of the flanderization bat hit Akihiko, Chie, and Teddie... Everyone else is at least recognizable. I am however happy to say that Yukiko did get a fair share of scary moments.

Regarding the murders... I do not recall the series giving a clear answer about the body disposal, or finding one on the wiki. At best I can offer the following theory. The TV world is a landscape greatly based on conscious thought, so it is unlikely that a thoughtless carcass can remain there for long. Dead bodies and other refuse are likely automatically ejected from the TV world after a certain time if they are left unclaimed by a sentient entity. I theorize being strung up on TV antennas to be a result of the antenna's connection to the world's medium, the television set.

BUT THEN THEY GAVE ME SOME NEW OUTFITS THAT I WANT TO USE

I definitely want Dancing All Night. I'm a sucker for rhythm games, and I think the music in Persona has always been pretty great. It does seem kind of weird though.

Anzai
07-13-2015, 01:56 AM
So I can technically say I spent most of last night murdering inter-dimensional babies with chemical and nuclear weapons.... but lets address the new spinoff first.

Persona 4 Dancing All Night makes me question what the people at Atlus are smoking. The genre shift from RPG to a rhythm game is incomprehensible! I'll just ignore this spinoff and maybe read up on the story behind at a later date. On the other hand the character redesigns are a pleasant surprise, but even though I enjoyed the music I just can't indulge that play style. I'm not getting my hopes up for the culprit being any more dignified than Teddie.

Some context to the first statement of my post, you can thank or blame Persona Q for this weirdness. Midway through the second labyrinth I decided to cut the knot by using one of the movement puzzle to backstab a F.O.E. instead of just running from them.... The Great F.O.E. Hunt has begun! I've taken a real liking to the Impure Reach + Toxic Slice combo for wearing down F.O.E.s, and boost is probably the best 'reason' for casting Megido. Ah, now if only the Labyrinths would last a bit longer without the questionable longevity of high random encounter rates....

Incomprehensible :p, because SE hasn't been doing the same thing just recently :p

Yeah, this. Theatrhythm was a huge success and rhythm games are huge in Japan, so it's no wonder Atlus decided to follow.

Plus, rhythm games are awesome :p

Lazerface - you don't need to have beaten any of the previous games to enjoy P3. I've never beaten P1 because that game was just stupid.

Pumpkin
07-13-2015, 05:37 AM
How was it stupid?

Fynn
07-13-2015, 05:45 AM
The plot is like a B horror movie. That's one thing.

Two, the mechanics are insanely convoluted, to the point that even in the remake, with its reworked translation, I really have no clue how the element system works.

It's a weird hybrid of first- and third-person and the 3D dungeons look ugly as sin.

The random encounters are not only insanely frequent, but hard as fuck, so good luck going anywhere. Because they're everywhere. Even in the mall in between healing spots, shops, and the Velvet room.

Thankfully, the two Persona 2 games fix most of those issues, and while they're less accessible than 3 or 4, they're still really good games, which I honestly can't say about Persona 1. I'll take Dancing All Night over it any day of the week.

Coolio!

So if you want the true end, just be persistent.

The game's gonna be all like "Alright, you should go home now," and you should be like "But I still have this nagging feeling..."

Then the game's like "Nah, you're imagining things. Go home. You're drunk."

And you're like "No, there has to be something."

And the game says "What are you talking about? You're done with the game! Please go away!"

And you say "NO!"

10 days left until the last shadow in P3P. My main character is like Level 72, and the others are between 42 (sorry, Doggy) and 67. Just currently grinding the highest floors of Tartarus currently available to me in order to get my other characters abilities.

I was under the impression that the game would end after the last shadow but that's not looking likely in terms of story which, by the way, has been pretty underwhelming so far.

Whelp, I took the time over the past 5 days to sit down and play The Answer all the way through, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be, but it was still pretty hard. And the ending felt very satisfying. That said, though, it did get me wanting to play P4A, P4A:U, PQ, and P4DAN. Maybe one day.

One thing that kept popping into my head while playing this, though: It occurred to me that the events of P3 happen 2 years before P4, so by the time the kids in P4 get around to awakening to their personae, the P3 crew has already been doing this for 2 years... So the skill disparity between the two would be rather massive when they actually meet up. Sort of sent tingles down my spine when I thought of that.
