Has anyone ever claimed to do this? Getting 100% makes for a very thorough playthrough, with tasks ranging from talking to everyone in a certain area or not entering a building at the wrong time. It seems like it's too precise to get on one go or without having a hint at what not to miss.

Closest I got was 93% before resorting to a walkthrough. Obviously, the first person to write a 100% walkthrough must have managed to do it without a complete walkthrough.

It IS too precise to get in one go, and that's the point. You're supposed to get it across multiple playthroughs.

Haven't done it myself, but from what I heard it's not too difficult. You just need the motivation and time to actually get it.

Don't forget to talk to the Moogle hiding while chasing LeBlanc.

I've followed walkthroughs designed for 100% and the strategy guide and still ended up with 99% in the end. I've also done it where I end up with 100% in one go and have no idea what the difference was. I don't see someone doing it without a walkthrough though considering how precise it all is.

Sometimes companies purposely design a game where some obscure parts are obscure in hopes that they buy a licensed strategy guide.

It's sort of the same reason why most old school games were so tough. While sometimes games were hard because they were an arcade port or developers only knew how to make arcade tough games, developers also didn't one some snot nosed kid to rent the game for a couple of days, beat it, and decide not to buy it for that reason.

Well, at least that's what I think.

that's pretty much confirmed by old school devs, so no opinions needed
