View Full Version : I don't always read fanfiction...
But when I do it's good enough to be a sequel to the actual smurfing book.
The Neverending Story: The Strongest Magic (https://www.fanfiction.net/s/7850202/1/The-Strongest-Magic)
While I was in a NeverEnding Story mood I started looking through fanfics out of curiosity and came upon this beauty. The story goes by the book more than the movie with the exception of Atreyu and calling the world Fantasia. At first I was only reading to see how they wrote the Empress (which is spot on btw), but, my god. This story actually had me invested. I haven't been invested in a story since Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. I spent two/three days straight staying up at eight o clock in the morning because I couldn't bring myself to stop. I couldn't even tell apart the OC Fantasians from the the canon ones, they were that well written. I mean... damn. If you're a fan of the book/movie I'd definitely recommend it.
So... Recommend fanfics that are actually good.

Good luck with that.
Trying to find good fanfiction is too much effort for too little payoff.

Sephex, it's not a fanfic, but maybe it's time you linked that writer's comp. story you found about the guy with the "sex-motorcycle".
It's pretty great.

Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality (http://hpmor.com/)
A bit of a slow start and preachy at some points but it all comes together nicely
I have read some honestly good fanfiction, unfortunately my favorite WoW fanfic was apparently removed from the internet so now I have to survive reading the author's published stuff, which isn't enough damnit (Blizzard liked her fan stuff so much that they published/canonized some of it)
I'm with you. I'm not typically a big fan of fanfiction. But once in a while I get an itch, and go looking for the diamonds in the rough in regards to my favorite games or shows. Its only happened a couple of times, but it's pretty impressive when it does happen. And it makes me glad that fanfiction in general is out there

I like fanfiction when it's good. I just get bored of trawling through endless amounts of rubbish to find the good stuff.
The places I know for fanfiction have a rating system, so at least you can dig through the ones other people thought were awesome instead of just shooting in the dark. That's how I found a couple of good ones. Unfortunately, most people's taste is horrible, so there's still quite a bit of garbage, but at least it's not completely random

Whoa. That's impressive.
I don't have much of a problem finding good fanfiction... though it's maybe because the characters I like tend to be obscure and don't attract many writers to begin with haha
I don't think I've ever actually read fanfiction.
I have heard about some pretty hilarious stories about fanfic. Like a friend told me once about this Harry Potter fanfic that started with this sentence:
"Jessica was sixteen years old and went down for breakfast."
She would also often beat her eyelashes long as a raven wing. Yeah :D

Have I ever mentioned that me and a couple of my friends did an audio book version of My Immortal? Because recording that was probably the greatest, most fulfilling time of my life. It is indeed the greatest fanfiction ever written.

Last year I read it out loud while Rob played some video game. I was in tears and pissing myself the entire time. Because it just sounds so much worse when you speak it. xD

It's particularly hilarious at 3am when everyone is half asleep while we're reading. We of course had an intro/outro to every chapta that was just the instrumental intro of My Immortal by Evanescence and did some other fun things in the editing side of things. Each of my roommates and I all assigned each other specific characters to voice during dialog and we tried to give them each different voices. This was particularly fun by the end when we started having trouble figuring out who was talking because it would seem to change mid sentence or something. I really need to get a copy of this recording before the roommate who edited everything's computer blows up. I only have a couple of the chaptas.

When talking about Harry Potter I use terms from My Immortal. Such as Da Death Dealers. Way more intimidating than Death Eaters - what does that even mean.
Then there's also HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
