The game will be released for PS4, the Nintendo 3DS, and apparently the Nintendo NX that is still in development.

The game looks like an HD version of DQVIII on PS4 but the 3DS has an interesting setup as the top screen displays a DQVIII style setup while the bottom screen displays an SNES/DS Remake sprite format.

Three versions? Interesting. The game looks great on PS4, some really beautiful looking environments. The 3DS version looks ok, obviously it doesn't have the hardware to push the visuals that much, but the addition of the 2D style on the bottom screen is a pretty unique feature.

I'm not a DQ guy, though. I've only ever played the demo of VIII and although I enjoyed it I never got the full game. I'd like to play it but I don't particularly want to buy the mobile version, and I don't have a 3DS. I'll keep an eye on XI though; might be the game to get me in to it.

I saw this trending on Twitter and it looks like Square may have let the cat out of the bag early on when the NX is coming out. Game looks nice. I like how they're doing the split screen with the 3DS version. Nice throwback to the older titles.

I will probably get a PS4 when this makes it to America.

...So, they are essentially having two different teams developing the exact same game for different platforms? That's a bit unusual. :p

There's no guarantee that home consoles are going to bounce back in the East, my guess is that the 3DS version is insurance xD

Or maybe it's to please various fans of the franchise who have been platform hopping.

^ Yep, both reasons are exactly why this is.

This is the game Horii wants to make and the hardcore fanbase (both in Japan and overseas) wants to play but unfortunately SQEX does not have confidence in a PS4-only release in Japan, and for good reason. So they need an "insurance" version on a more popular system but because Unreal Engine 4 has no official support for any of them, they have no choice but to make a separate game. The 3DS is the logical choice because they already have the assets for the other games, which they are using to piece together DQXI 3DS. That ensures, however, that the PS4 version is dead on arrival in Japan, creating the ironic reality that Yuji Horii and the main development team are effectively creating a mainline Dragon Quest solely intended for Western release. It would be amazing if the mainstream Japanese market actually springs for DQXI PS4 but I won't be surprised if/when they don't.

Either way, both versions look fantastic and I'm so happy we're getting the first "real" Dragon Quest in more than 10 years.

...Square may soon make me cry.

But Neo, Western gamers don't want traditional JRPGs.

As I mentioned above, there's no reason for the PS4 version to exist unless it's coming Westward. SQEX is localizing Star Ocean 5 and Nier 2 - they're obviously not going to skip a AAA DQ. A vetted NeoGaf insider who works for Sony also confirmed (http://m.neogaf.com/showpost.php?p=171262954) all PlayStation DQ games are coming West.

Not to sound paranoid, they're either baiting a social media fan campaign for the free advertising or saving it for a fan event like PAX or PSX so SQEX/Sony can act like the benevolent kings who heard the cries of their peasants.

I'd like to believe it's definitely coming, but my level of faith is at an all-time low.

Seeing how Yuji Hori mentioned the 3DS remakes of DQVII and VIII will most likely come West (http://gematsu.com/2015/07/dragon-quest-vii-viii-3ds-coming-west-according-series-creator), I'm pretty sure this game will leave Japan. Square has said they are backing Sony in order to build up a stronger console sales for their titles and it's one of the reasons why the VII remake is even happening.

A non-multiplayer focused DQ is a welcome sight. Building on VIII sounds like a gread idea! I hope we get it.
