So I don't know how many of you know about Mobile Suit Gundam but the whole franchise starts off with the Principality of Zeon which was a combination of Nazi Germany and the Empire of Japan. They were also really, really bad and evil. They were made this way as a rebuttal to many Japanese people who do not admit they ever did anything wrong in World War II.
What does this have to do with FFVII? Well I was watching Gundam and also some FFVII LP's and it hit me. We all know Wutai is Japan. Japan who lost to the cartoonishly evil colonial powers. Now they have sold their honor and pride and live under the thumb of the filthy gaijins.
It's not terribly subtle and I guess it only ever escaped my notice because I don't think FF has ever had a political message or agenda, unlike Gundam. Maybe it doesn't mean anything.
