I've heard about people riding their bikes or motorcycles to work, but what about people riding their skateboards to work? Has anyone ever heard of that? Does anyone know someone who rides their skateboard to work?

I have a colleague who rode a push scooter if that helps.

I don't have sidewalks in my town so, I don't know anyone who does anything other than drive. Sorry.

There was this Erasmus student here who rode her skateboard to school.

She was always late to class.

Fucking Etienette, what the fuck

More importantly, who rides a skateboard to work who doesn't end up having an incident? Seriously, how do you even use these things?

My Big GM truck is to sexy not to drive around in. However I used to ride a quad to work all the time when I was younger

My bf rides his longboard (which basically is a long skateboard) to pratically everything. I definitely would like some type of hovercraft to get to short and long distances. /lazy

In New York I see people ride scooters, skateboard, bikes, hovercraft thingies (forgot what they're called) to wherever. People bike from Brooklyn all the way to Manhattan via the Brooklyn or Manhattan bridge.

I never took a mule to work, but I have ridden on a few buses driven by mules.

It makes a lot more sense in urban settings or places like large school campuses.

I'd ride a bike to work if it were closer, but I don't think my old man hip could handle 25-30 miles of biking every day.

people use skateboards and longboards as a means of transportation, yes

I tried using a skateboard once, damn thing nearly killed me. I never learned the knack of using a piece of wood with wheels attached as a means of transportation.

It would make sense to ride a bike or skateboard to work if it was close by, but not if it was further away.

I've seen dogs and cats ride skateboards too.

It was actually very common on my college campus since everything was so close.

Sort of related. I went to the grocery store earlier and someone had a bicycle chained to the bike rack with these HUGE tires on it. Not huge as in large in diameter, but very, very thick. I suppose I should have said that in the first place. Anyway, they were the bicycle equivalent to monster truck tires.

I've spent all day thinking about this. Why are the tires that big? Are they for off road purposes? Don't most bicycles handle being off road well enough with normal tires? Did they get shot with that gun from Live And Let Die that inflates stuff? Do they make the bike easier to ride for convenience? Do they make it tougher to ride for endurance?

Wait, I live in 2015. I found an article explaining it. http://gearjunkie.com/fat-bike-trend

TL;DR: Easier to get around because of better grip and can bike through stuff like snow and sand much easier.

But still. I live in the suburbs. Kind of an overkill. The investigation continues...

I haven't posted in this thread for a while, but I thought I'd bring the topic back, because it popped up into my head again. Since some people ride their bikes or motorcycles to work, can people ride their skateboards to work? And I'm not just talking high school and college students, I'm also talking post-college graduates who are in the workforce.

I would regard a skateboard as a short-distance method. Maybe a mile at the most? Bicycles I reckon any more than 5 miles is a bit of a slog. I don't think a motorbike is safe for doing really long distances say... more than 20 miles. Any more than that and you're looking at a car or a train.

Putting it in Star Wars terms

Skateboard = Luke's Land-speeder
Bicycle = Short Range Imperial TIE Fighter
Motorbike = Millennium Falcon
Car/Train = Imperial Corellian Ships/Star Destroyers

Why would you put things in Star Wars terms? This isn't science fiction.

I work with a few people who skateboard to work. To be honest, it looks a bit silly and I'd just get a bike. It's faster and arguably safer.

Real badasses unicycle to work.

NEITHER IS STAR WARS.

It happened a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.
