Well i guess looking at it, my highlighters are just thrown in there....

but the pens and pencils are all point down.

Always up. If they have caps on them it saves space for more pens, if they don't the tip could become crushed against the bottom of the pot, therefor damaging the pen and causing a problem when using said pen.

I had to read this question 3 times to convince myself it wasn't a double entendre.

Pens face up to see what colour they are- eg highlighters,felt tips etc. Sometimes you can't tell unless you see the lid.

Controversial topic though... A bit like whether you like your toilet roll to roll over the top or underneah... oOOoO!

I don't put them in holders, I have them scattered idly around my desk or shoved into drawers.

I did not expect this many people to have pencils that face down, dont you people worry about unnecessarily blunting your pencils or drawing on the bottom of your pencil cups!?

I can't use pencils in my work, but if I did have them in a holder, I'd point the ends down, because I would do something dumb and probably stab myself with it.
