Interesting...

This could potentially be exciting! I love this series. The movie wasn't god awful, but it's obviously been too long to make any sequels to it. I've wanted them to do a reboot.

I just hope they don't shy away from the darker and the more controversial aspects of the series.

I can't imagine them bowdlerising it. They'll know all the criticisms the film had and the BBC isn't so beholden to worrying about the US market or evangelists or anything. Plus their recent adaptation of Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell was great.

The first book is one of my all time favorites. The others I'm kind of meh on. Anyways hopefully this is better than the movie (even though Nicole Kidman as Mrs. Coulter was perfect)

Same! Absolutely freaking LOVE the first book. Disliked the 2nd one. And couldn't even bring myself to give the third one a try.

But this has me excited. The movie was so bad, I've been hoping for awhile that they would do a reboot, and a TV series seems like a good way to go.

The third one was an improvement over the second but overall I tend to just re-read the first (my copy is quite dog-eared!) and then call it good :) I rarely read through the whole series anymore.

Am I only one who loved the second and third books?

The movie wasn't great. It wasn't TERRIBLE, but it was a bit forgettable. But, if they do it properly, this could be really good.

I thought the whole series was great.

I guess I fell in love with the idea of Lyra's world so much that I found it hard to care about all the other weird alternate worlds. I wanted more daemons and talking polar bears, and less about Our World or weird elephants on wheels world or whatever. The second and third books also got weirdly preachy (IMO).

But I did like the teeny tiny people who rode around on dragonflies, or whatever that was! They were super great!

And I still think (very) fondly of the series, I just don't have the urge to read beyond the first book most of the time.

I saw the film, but can't honestly say I remember much from it, but it was... alright? I've never read the books, but the world seems interesting, so I might consider watching it.

Definitely read it! I liked parts of the movie but it left so much out I always kind of wondered if it would be super confusing to someone who hadn't read the books.

The Subtle Knife is one of my favorite books. The series as a whole is my favorite series of novels, so I'll be very interested in seeing this.

Hopefully they can make it work as a tv series. The Golden Compass movie was so boring.

I never bothered watching it after hearing how butchered it was and how they weren't sure if they'd even produce the other two books.

Yeah, you aren't missing anything. Apparently toward the very end of production the corporate suits at New Line ordered the production team to make massive changes and remove all the references to Catholicism, among other things.

It's not a horrible movie. It's just unremarkable and boring. You can tell while watching it that it's not the result of what the people making it originally had envisioned.
