Ten years ago, the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII was still in full force, whetting our appetites and making all nerds speculate whether this could mean that an actual remake is in the works.

Years later, the compilation seemed to fizzle out after just three games (one of them Japan-only) and a movie, but after all this time we're getting a remake after all! Happy day! Still, before we had the remake to be excited about, we could play Crisis Core and the game we're talking about today which is Dirge of Cerberus.

Dirge of Cerberus is an interesting little game as it is the only game in the Compilation that is a direct sequel to the original game. It stars Vincent Valentine, one of the most popular characters from FFVII, as he deals with his inner demons and saves the world from a new threat that is actually much less new than we initially expect. The story may leave a lot to be desired, but it's still nice to come back to this story and these characters, especially if you're a fan of Vincent. The game was pretty controversial due to its mechanics, as it was not an RPG but a Third-Person Shooter with just a few RPG elements thrown in, and this did not sit well with a lot of fans.

Still, this is what we got! Have you played Dirge of Cerberus? Any fond (or terrible) memories you'd like to share? Let us know in the comments!

Not many FF fans are commemorating this anniversary, I take it?

Since now I'm a commenter, and not a writer of the article, I can honestly say this is the worst FF in existence :p

lol

I've never really considered spinoffs as FF games.

Not really, since at the time no one knew how shit this game would turn out to be

This game is the one that kicked Square Enix out of the "could do no wrong" category for me. It's painful to see arguably my favorite game of all time reduced to lame spin-offs and retcons.

Dirge was entertaining. It was my first third person shooter and I was horrible at it but I have fond memories playing it with my brother. We went back to it last year, replayed parts of it and did some more bonus missions just because it was fun. Damn those things are HARD.

Didn't mind this game as much as say Crisis Core Anthology-wise. Thought Core disrupted the continuity of 7's story, and I'm not looking forward to what they do with that in the remake. Other than that, Crisis Core was an infinitely better game. DoC was one that I'll probably never pick up again. Sorry, ten year old PS2 purchase.

I like the game. Since it was a spin-off the genre change didn't bother me. Third Person Shooter fits Vincent rather well given that he's a gunner. I enjoyed the customization you could do with his gun, but smurf the snipers. Assholes.

I can't really judge the gameplay as I really don't play shooters, but my God, did the story make XIII look good or what

I couldn't finish it. The combat isn't awful I guess but it certainly isn't great. Once I got to the cait sith parts I just kinda ran out of patience for it

That's very interesting.

And completely irrelevant.

i actually liked it for the most part, my big gripe about it was the invisible walls that prevented Vincent from jumping over 2 foot high fences or railings... they make him all super acrobatic in the FMVs, yet in actual game-play he can't even jump over something waist high or lower...

Brought the game cheap and then gave it away later on with no regrets from memory !

I actually bought a copy of this game not too long ago. Once my gaming room is finished and all consoles are up and running, I may give this a whirl!
