So sharky and I are going to fight. For a whole month! He left the toilet seat up one too many times and I just can't take it anymore.

Really though, we were planning to do a fighting game night. Then we realized that we have a lot of fighting games and so we decided to make it a fighting game weekend. But then we found even more fighting games in the vault and now we are making a whole month of it. We have 29 games. 3 of them we don't know if they will work, but we will try anyway. So this will be the thread for talking about all of the new and old fighting games, how we enjoyed them, and anything else. Feel free to participate and talk about the games and whatever.

February 1st - Mortal Kombat

So we started out with good ol' Mortal Kombat on the Super Nintendo. I'd never actually played the original, so this was pretty exciting! I am used to newer fighting games though, so it was a bit rough around the edges. It was hard for me to do combos and stuff and I found myself standing there punching erratically while Rayden (spelled Rayden in this game) sat there and watched me without a clue what to do. The uppercuts were very OP even back then, I see.

http://i.imgur.com/nUmuBBf.jpg

The cast of characters was small so I tried them all out. Since I was unable to effectively use any of them, they all felt pretty similar to me! I actually won a few rounds against sharky but he was the overall victor, which we expected. My first win was with Johnny Cage. It was funny playing the same character (Liu Kang) at one point because there was barely any noticeable difference at all!

http://i.imgur.com/98jy2oA.jpg

Afterwards we tried to tackle story mode. I put it on super easy and I think (hope) that it didn't save the settings because we were getting our butts kicked in the third endurance round

MK I is excellent. I first played it on the arcade & had no idea of what I was doing. The game was so dark & fast, very different from Street Fighter II.

I had the game on the Game Gear then the Super Nintendo. I remember the GG version didn't have Kano (the Game Boy version lacked Johnny Cage). I enjoyed both versions.

I think you'll like MKII better, as it was a much more fluid game. MKI can come off as kinda stiff @ times.

I had fun because it was like, let's face it, a piece of fighting game history! But it is certainly stiff and plain by today's standards. I have played II but it was a looooong time ago, so we'll see how it goes this time!

You have my permission to call it Fightbruary if you want.

Mortal Kombat is awesome and I had a lot of fun going back to the first one last year. Kicked ass as Sonya! Shame the movie turned her into a damsel.

This is the most exciting thread of 2016 so far :omgomg:

I have MK1 & MK2 for the SNES and yeah the sequel is far superior. Not that the original is without its merits, I just feel the sequel is a better game due to the blood, guts, dismemberment and horrific deaths.

In fact, this is true for most games.

February 2nd - Mortal Kombat II

So sharkson and I played some MK II tonight. It's more polished than the first and there were some nice background details. Jade popped up in the background at one point as well. The noises were annoying though, my goodness.

http://i.imgur.com/TojRudF.png

I did terribly the first half. Was getting my butt kicked left and right. But the second half it was closer to evenly matched and I won a good few games. He may have been taking it easy on me after I got sad when he got a perfect against me.

http://i.imgur.com/BOXixbP.png

I was happy to see Mileena and Kitana, my two faves. I did indeed play this game when I was super little so it was kind of nostalgic. I suck with them though. But I could already see some of the characters coming in to their own and fighting less generically like in the first one! I was a bit sad to see Sonya gone because I was hoping there would be 3 ladies. But there were only 2 ;_; Overall there was a larger and better cast though

Sonya and Kano were both abducted and can be seen imprisoned in the background on the final stage with Shao Kahn, so that's why they're not playable characters.

MKII is my favorite of the series and one of six games I played all the time on the Sega Genesis as a child. Reptile was my go to guy for a long time.

Sonya & Kano return as playables in MKIII. II had better gameplay & graphics than III, IMO.

But the best of the 2D era MKs was MK Trilogy. It kinda mixed the first III games, much like Armageddon mixed the 3D games.

Mortal Kombat II was my favourite as well. So much more fluid a fighter. It was never on par with Street Fighter 2 but this definitely improved matters.

Best in terms of character options and stages perhaps, but Trilogy actually managed to be the worst playing version of MK3 which was already a worse playing game than MK2 if you ask me. And I'd probably say the exact same about Armageddon to be honest. Don't even get me started on it's god awful create a fatality thing. Take one of the best parts of the games and give everyone the exact same fatality moves? That was a brilliant idea.

But I will say that none of these games compare to Shaolin Monks. It may not be a fighting game, but damn if it isn't the most entertaining MK ever made.

They got pretty lazy on the fatalities with 3. Everything was pretty much some variant of an exploded skeleton. If Trilogy didn't have the large cast (and the PlayStation version let you play as the super bosses) I probably wouldn't have gone back to it as much as I did.

MK3 was largely forgettable for me even as a kid.

I liked the fatality thing in Armageddon.

February 3rd - Battle Arena Toshinden

So tonight was a good night for me! I started out of the gate strong and won the first 3/4 matches. Things ended pretty evenly, but for a while there, I was the winner! Especially impressive seeing as how I have never played this game before. Oh we also actually got all of the generic storyish mode done because the game is super short!

http://i.imgur.com/p86W3Gz.png

It was pretty fun. It apparently was one of the first of it's kind. It uses a lot of 3D movement when not many other games were doing that and it incorporated weapon fighting like Soul Calibur, but before Soul Calibur. It really does use a lot of the 3D movement, although it's pretty rough. The movement is almost too smooth and you go jumping and flipping across the screen way too easily.

http://i.imgur.com/PSIcKPj.jpg

Falling off the edge is also much too easy. Probably the best moment of the night was when sharky fell off the stage during the VICTORY POSE. It's not set up to well and you'll fall off the edge if you go near it, instead of when you should actually fall off. It's almost like you're on ice. The backgrounds are AWFUL. But it was a lot of fun and Ellis is the best thing ever

February 4th - Tekken 1, 2, and 3

So today we were supposed to play Tekken 3, but sharky said he had 1 and 2 on his Tekken 5 copy and apparently, APPARENTLY, 29 fighting games was just not enough fighting games.

http://i.imgur.com/8GFjRvq.jpg

So it was a bit of a rough night at the start, honestly. Original Tekken was original Tekken. Jack was super oddly proportioned and and Nina looked like an ad for plastic surgery gone wrong. I did not win one fight. Not one. Paul is a horrible bastard. There, I said it.

http://i.imgur.com/WkIS6rZ.jpg

Tekken 2 was more fun because of nostalgia. It was actually the FIRST GAME I EVER PLAYED EVER, so it was neato to go back and see like, wow, I remember this. There was a really good selection of characters, so that was fun. It was also interesting to go back to how some characters used to play and used to be similar to each other. JUN, my first favourite video game character ever!!

http://i.imgur.com/TZ2c7WX.png

Sadly, because this was a nostalgia trip, it reinforced the point that I haven't played this game in over 10 years and I was crap at it. And I lost again. A lot. Like a lot.

http://i.imgur.com/Y11e0HD.jpg

Next was Tekken 3 and, I'm going to be honest, I was pretty fed up by this point. I don't think many people have fun when they can't win and basically just sit there getting beat up. This is another game I used to love but haven't played in a long long time. Sharky, apparently, spent a lot of time and effort and even won a minor tournament. This led to some very frustrating fights where I would lose to some mega-King combo and there was just nothing I could do. I may as well have not even been in the fights.

http://i.imgur.com/ubW05MV.jpg

So we took a break from it because I was feeling pretty crap at this point about myself. But it was okay when we came back. We started with Tekken ball which is super fun and not possible to be mad at. I won most of those rounds because I am good at hitting a ball. This also allowed me to re-familiarize myself with the controls a bit. When we started the actual fights, sharky agreed to bench King and used other characters that he was still very competent with, just not AS competent. I won with Xiaoyu, who is still one of my favourite characters, and it was slightly more evenly matched. I still lost a bunch but I had a lot more fun the second time around~

http://i.imgur.com/weobCyy.jpg

It was also fun to see the series progress as well

You shut your mouth about Paul, you heathen!

Tekken 2 was the first game I played on the PlayStation. Good times. I always enjoyed King, the purple devil, and the angel. The latter two always shot laser beams which was cool.

I got to play Tekken 1 last year on the same month, and, well, yes, original Tekken was original Tekken.
My mom also thought King was cute and liked the look of the game. Yes, my mom read my reviews. SHE'S SEEN THEM ALL!

I had Tekken 2 but never really got into it that much. Tekken 3, on the other hand, I absolutely adored. That game is the reason I still buy Tekken games to this day.

February 5th - Soul Calibur II

So today was a good day for me! It is time to move on to PS2 era games and after an absurd amount of defeats yesterday, I won the most matches today. Yay me! I think it ended up at something like 18-11, or something like that. I was both amazed and surprised at how well I was doing, especially since he was able to clear the story mode in III when we played a few weeks ago, and I was not.

http://i.imgur.com/XaeEFY6.jpg

I even won with Astaroth, the horribly brutish and terribly slow dude that I have never really used before because that's just not my style. But overall it was actually pretty close. Even the rounds I did win were not easy victories and it was fun because there were a lot of moves and blocks and doges and it made for exciting rounds because neither of us won easily.

http://i.imgur.com/O6jxCEV.jpg

The game was really fun. I very much enjoy using Talim, she might just be my favourite fighting game character gameplay wise. We also did the VS Extra mode or whatever it's called where we got to use all of the weapons sharky had unlocked. There were some silly ones and some nice ones, so that was fun too. We also watched some of the form videos which were pretty neat. Overall it was a good time and I enjoyed it a lot. There were some pretty tense matches which was a lot of fun

I played Tekken 2 yesterday on my Vita! It was a nice trip down memory lane. I hadn't unlocked any of the characters so I decided to do a run with Heihachi to get the ball rolling. I struggled to get through Round 7 against Yoshimitsu but beat him eventually. I battered Lee Chaolan first time before facing Kazuya. I then proceeded to get my arse handed to me over and over and over and over. I eventually rage quit and turned off my Vita.

I still have no characters unlocked

February 6th - Dead or Alive 2 Hardcore

Well, firstly, we are terrible people and decided that 31 games for Fightbruary was not enough and we went out and bought another fighting game, which will be added to the schedule for the PS3 era. The schedule has also been slightly rearranged. With that out of the way, today we played some Dead or Alive 2 Hardcore. I've never played this game, I only played the 5th one in the series.

http://i.imgur.com/pXMHzyb.jpg

My winning streak of yesterday is now long gone and I have been returned to the norm of getting my butt kicked. The game also seems to heavily rely on blocking and countering and, well, that's just not something I do. I'm not good at it. I've never done it. I always neglect the guard buttons in games and suddenly trying to figure it out in a difficult fight does not yield the best results. And so I lost most of the games. I won a fair few rounds but very few matches. Oh well, I look forward to the day when I can win again

http://i.imgur.com/H727Tmf.jpg

I was a bit surprised at the low number of female characters (relatively speaking) since 5 has a majority females, I think. It's at least pretty even. Happily though sharky had all of the outfits unlocked! We also played tag team on the same team and that was pretty fun. Ironically enough, I seem good at defeating enemies that he loses against, but I can't beat him? It was fun though. Obviously not as smooth as the later game, but still a good game. It's also very interactive with the environment which is pretty neat.

February 7th - Bloody Roar 3

Today we played a fighting game I had never even heard of let alone played. But apparently you can transform in to animals and whatever, beast forms, and so the first thing we did was look up how to do that. It turns out it is as simple as pressing O when you have some of your bar built up. That easy! You do revert back when your bar depletes and I couldn't find a way to revert without waiting for it to run out. Also, you heal when in beast form, something I picked up on right away but that sharky apparently had never noticed!

http://i.imgur.com/l7lizFS.jpg

It was pretty even overall. I think he won a few more fights than me. I did actually win the first match though, so I was quite impressed with myself since I had never played the game. I lost quite a few rounds pretty hard though, especially against the silver haired bug guy who is just way over powered. I also beat this really slow and strong character by being very methodical and taking forever to do it. I would slowly whittle away his health and he would punch me once and 1/3 of my life was gone. Sharky was much more effective at using most of the characters than I was, overall.

http://i.imgur.com/Za8dVQj.png

I really liked Alice the rabbit girl and I wanted to like the cat girl but I just could not use her effectively. Sharky was pretty great with her but I couldn't use her to her full potential. Still, there were a lot of really fun characters to use, the gameplay was pretty smooth, and the beast modes really added a lot to the strategy. Do you wait for them to use theirs or do you use it when they're in their weaker form? Do you use it when you need the healing? Stuff like that added something to it. I actually really enjoyed this game and I plan to do a full playthrough of it at some point!

February 8th - Tekken 4

There is so much Tekken to play this month, oh my gosh. We still have 5 and 6 and the two Tag Games. Speaking of, Fightbruary is taking its toll on me. My wrists are really starting to huuuuuuurt. Shut up, I'm bad at video game. Also, Tekken is probably both of our least favourite Tekken game and we had a club thing tonight, so we played the bare minimum, which was me using every character once.

http://i.imgur.com/om64nG1.jpg

So as expected, sharky won most of the matches. I think in the end it was 12 to 7 in his favour. Honestly though, I have myself a small handicap because he's much better at the game and my wrists hurt. So it probably would have been much more evenly matched if I didn't use the handicap. Still, I did win a fair few rounds even if I didn't win too many matches.

http://i.imgur.com/IMez3iG.jpg

I did start and finish strong though. The controls are stiffer in this game and it felt like a step back. Like we were back to the earlier PS1 games on our Fightbruary schedule. It felt stiffer than Tekken 3, even. It was a bit nostalgic though because I never liked 4 enough to go back to it since I have many Tekken games to play if I get in the mood, so it was fun to go back and play a game I hadn't played in such a long time.

Tekken 4 was bad, but it all gets better after that. Tekken 5 was great though I never owned it, but I did own 6 and that was one of the biggest time sinks during the PS3 era for me. I look back very fondly on that game.

It was better than I thought it would be, better than I remembered. It was pretty stiff. Better than 2, but 3 feels silky smooth compared to 4.

It's the Suikoden 4 of the Tekken series. A decent fighter, but not when it's compared to the rest of the series.

I like that they tried new things, like environmental involvement and how certain throws are trying to re-position yourself (position matters in this one). It just didn't make for a great Tekken game.

It did give us Steve Fox, who is a unique fighter in the series. I'm not good with him, but I like using him anyway.

February 9th - Virtua Fighter 4

Today we played Virtua Fighter 4, which I had played before and reviewed earlier this year. It's nothing special, kind of bare bones mostly for the casual player, but there's nothing wrong with it and it was still fun. Decent selection of characters with many different fighting styles and some very pretty stages.

http://i.imgur.com/oA24eai.jpg

Today was a good day for me. My second victory night in 9 days of fighting, woooo! Honestly though I am surprised by how many fights I won and with certain characters especially that I am very much not good with. It was fun either way though and the last round was pretty great as it was 1-1 and came down to a tiny sliver of life bar left. Those types of fights really get you excited. Or stressed. Or both

http://i.imgur.com/ZeWT9W0.png

This game felt smoother than a lot of the other ones we've played up until now but sharky disagrees so maybe it's just me. I found it easier to play than a lot of the previous games. It looks a bit dated though, it hasn't aged the best, but the gameplay was fun and responsive. I had a pretty good time with it.

Didn't know Virtua Fighter made it to 4, or 5 for that matter. I was only familiar with the games from the Sega days, and that's it.

Never made it past 2 on the Tekken front. Well, not counting Tekken Tag Tournament 2, anyway.

Yeah, VF couldn't keep up with its competitors once they all got on the same gameplay level. Its really only a series for beginners due to its super intensive tutorial modes and for the hardcore crowd due to its technical finesse. The modes and lack of story or character personalities make it kind of meh for people just looking for a fun fighting game as arcade and versus modes get old quick. But people still praise the technical aspects. Its just not as special now that Soul and Tekken and Mortal Kombat are more than just flashy crazy fun games. They are technically sound now as well. Plus their characters have more personality. Their games have more story. And their games have more modes to enjoy

February 10th - Soul Calibur III

Wow, we're about a third of the way done with Fightbruary! So today we played my favourite Soul Calibur game (I know it's unpopular opinion, hush yourself), Soul Calibur III! I like it because of more outfit customization and stuff but before IV where they all look different and kind of the same...

http://i.imgur.com/pP48kzl.jpg

So anyway, like the last Soul Calibur match, I won the most matches today as well. I did have a handicap on for about half of the characters, because I have been sucking this Fightbruary, but then turned it off and still won a fair few matches. We both won a lot of rounds though, even when we lost the matches overall. He did get a few perfects on me and I absolutely hate that. I guess I made up for it by getting like 6 ring outs on him. I am the master of the ring out!

http://i.imgur.com/fWHHcGE.jpg

So it was pretty fun, I enjoy SCIII a lot so I would have had fun either way. He beat me with his best characters vs me with my best character. There are a LOT of characters in this game though so it took a little while to go through every one of them. The brightside is I didn't know Tira was so fun to use so I might start using her more regularly!

Ditto all that. And the opinion isn't as unpopular these days. Especially with how the series is getting treated. Mostly only hardcore pros don't like Three for having some broken characters and mechanics. But it pioneered creating your own fighter. The most entertaining side mode in any fighting game. And a huge roster with really not a lot of just throw away characters. They almost did too good and aren't able to recapture that lightning. The stars must have aligned or something

Don't listen to the modesty. She did really well with this one. I may have landed a perfect round or two, but she was pretty dominant. The best I could do was tie the fight count up, but never took the lead. At one point she had a 5 fight lead, and that was after we evened out the life bars. Credit where it's due, she played more rounds with out the handicap, it wasn't half. We're both terrible compared to pros, but filthy casuals would have their hands full fighting her.

I did win the favorite player vs. favorite player rounds, but I didn't do that in SC2, which is my preferred game.

Going back and playing it again, it's a better game than I gave it credit for. My opinion has changed. I must have played a lot of it back then, because I had almost every thing unlocked. I was missing some weapons.

February 11th - Tekken 5

So I always dread Tekken nights. Not really, but the hope does kind of go out the window. I know what to expect. I'm sure you guys know what to expect as well. I lost a whole bunch. I won a fair amount but it was really finding a balance with the handicap. 30 was too much, 10 was too little, so we settled at 15 where I still lost a bunch but could at least win every 3-4 fights.

http://i.imgur.com/9LhQEsO.jpg

We got home late, I was tired, and Fightbruary is really taking a tole on my wrists and thumbs. Tekken 5 also has an extensive cast of characters and I like we did 30 matches with AT LEAST 2 rounds per match, sometimes three. That's a lot of fighting! I had planned to do a last round with Xiaoyu but alas my body is weak and crumbling under the pressures of virtual fighting. Sigh~

http://i.imgur.com/gjyQGvB.jpg

It was fun though. There were some pretty tense matches and I put up a good fight, even on the rounds I lost. There were not many rounds where I was just super easy to beat and he had a ton of life left. I usually at least made him work for his victories. And if you can't aggravate your partner while they beat you up, well, maybe you are not meant to be! Really though they were pretty good rounds. Tekken 5 is a solid Tekken game, it is better than 4 but I think it suffers from basically being 6 light. It does stuff better than the games that came before it, but not as well as 6. So might as well play 6! Still a very good game though and we also have the first 3 games on it that we played earlier this month.

February 12th - NeoGeo Battle Coliseum

So neither I nor the sharkdogg knew what to expect from this game because, as it turns out, neither of us had played it before! Poor game was just sitting there, waiting, neglected for many many years. Who knows how long he's had it. But today it got its day in the sun as we proceeded to beat the crap out of each other via this SNK game that is a mixture of SNK games, which are generally a mixture of SNK games (?). Kind of Like King of Fighters, but I liked this one more. The graphics were kinda meh, but there was an odd 3D bear playing with a tire swing, so

http://i.imgur.com/KwZp8Gr.jpg

I was immediately impressed just by the character selection. So many characters interested me! Wow, what about that one? And that one? So it was already off to a good start. The characters are mostly really good too, I am quite happy with it. The game also plays in a tag team format, so getting through the whole (large) roster went by faster since I got to use 2 characters at a time. Which is good because my thumbs give out more and more every night. It's also only one round instead of 2 because... well you have two characters. It's a tag team dealio where you can switch in and out during the fight.

http://i.imgur.com/4xhywDu.jpg

I won this one. It was 11 to 8 by the end of it. My boyfriend called me something like a "Jump happy jackass" part of the way through. He was much much better at special moves though, I don't think I even did one, and he was able to use this little old dude much better than me. Like, the old dude is super OP if you know what you're doing and I could do NOTHING. But overall I won, which was nice. I savour my victories where I can. Really this game was a bunch of fun, even if I had lost, and I have added it to my list of games to playthrough properly. So much fun and I am sad it was sitting on the shelf collecting dust. Also I had a fighting game dream last night which means both my body and mind are going out. Will I make it through Fightbruary? Stay tuned and find out~

February 13th - Guilty Gear X2

So today we played a game I have long heard of but never played. It seemed to have an interesting and creative cast of characters, so I was actually really excited to try this one. While I was correct in my assumption that there were really creative and interesting characters, I actually very much did not enjoy this game and doubt I will play it again. There was a very wide range of play styles and fighters though, which was a positive point.

http://i.imgur.com/1MMFDCA.jpg

Certain characters were fun to use but overall the gameplay style did not mesh well with me personally. It felt kind of stiff and hard to get the hang of. It's probably super fun for people who know what they're doing and/or are better at fighting games than me, but for me it was actually rather frustrating and not very fun at all. I did not enjoy, although I guess it is nice to try new things. I was excited for this game though so that's a bit disappointing.

http://i.imgur.com/ataUxoH.jpg

The matches were pretty even. I did horribly in the beginning but then I picked it up and would win 4 matches in a row. Even the matches I lost I generally won a round, or at least put up a good fight. So it probably came out to about even in the end. The game didn't keep track of consecutive wins, but probably about even. Our last match was a good finisher though. We each won a round with barely any visible life bar left, so it made it quite tense. My hand cramped up hardcore at the end, but that's alright! Tense finishes are always a good way to end the day. Back to Tekken tomorrow where the wins and self-esteem I have accumulated over the past two days will be destroyed. Valentine's Day fun~~

I can't get into Guilty Gear either. Tried a couple buy they are very slow stiff and methodical. I find it difficult to work out the moves. Generally I can pick up a game and at least one character will speak to me. I beat the one we had, Reloaded I think. But it was no fun. Blaz Blue was much easier to get the hang of for some reason. And I didn't enjoy that game either. And I think the same team did Under Night and I love that game. So the creators are capable of a wide variety of fighting game styles

February 14th - Tekken Tag Tournament

So, in celebration of Valentine's Day, I got my butt handed to me in yet another Tekken game. It's getting quite frustrating and it makes me sad. I even had a 30 pt handicap at one point and I was getting countered, and special moves used against me and... well it was sad. I was sad.

http://i.imgur.com/Yag1BRQ.jpg

I made a bit of a comeback towards the end thanks entirely to my handicap. Once we got in to the characters that he didn't know, the handicap was lowered by half but was still very much there. He did win the overall most amount of matches though. I did start enjoying it more as it went along because even though I was still losing by a lot, the fights became less one sided. So that part was fun, and I do enjoy Tekken games.

http://i.imgur.com/KMl9Ycp.jpg

The cast was smaller than I remembered and the whole thing was actually pretty quick to play through because it was teams of two. I tried to make teams that made sense instead of just going in order like I usually do. I did not find out how to tag out Unknown though, which was odd. I also thought it would be fights until both fighters were defeated, but instead you just need to KO one of them for the round. It had been a long time since I played the first Tag, so I forgot. So even if one fighter has complete health left, if you KO one of them, that's it! And now we will resume Valentine's day by playing the silly Tekken Bowling, which is probably the best part of Tekken Tag!

I'm not actually too bad at the game, it's more of a matter of sharky being REALLY good. He's sunk a lot of hours in to the series and even won a minor tournament. He knows a lot of the moves and throws and counters and combos. So while I'm competent, I'm at a much lower skill level.

As you may notice, it's generally pretty even or even stacked in my favour when we play games neither of us knows well. So I don't think I'm too horrible at fighting games. I think he's just really good at Tekken

And we still have two more to go ugh^^;

I think Persona 4: Arena Ultimax had about 21 characters, which felt about right. There were enough characters that you could get a feel for each of them, but not too many characters that you feel swamped. Some fighting games do put too many people in the roster, though. Super Smash, though I love the games, are groaning under the weight.

I like large casts because that way it is much more likely I will find someone I like. If theres too little I often won't find one that really clicks with me. If you like smaller casts, you would be mostly better off sticking to older games. Most series tend to expqnd the casts as time goes on. I'm sure you can find some new ones with smaller casts

February 15th - Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance

So Fightbruary is half over and this also marks the end of PS2 era fighting games. We ended it in probably the worst possible way, with one of the worst Mortal Kombat games ever. It was by far the worst one we have played this month. Unless you want to play it for the lulz, I would skip it. It was funny at first but eventually I wanted to move on. Also the opening cut scene just never ends. Not literally, but it sure feels like it

http://i.imgur.com/ZUSIOA4.jpg

Lizerdman's crab stance was probably the best thing about the game. It was extremely clunky and very, very slow to respond. The three fighting styles is a neat idea in concept but poorly executed. The weapon stances are pretty OP for people like us who didn't know how to play properly, which made using the other ones entirely about just seeing what they were. It got easier as we got used to it but it still wasn't very fun aside from laughing at how awful it was.

http://i.imgur.com/8hVDGbr.jpg

Sharky won the most rounds by a good bit. I did win a few, much to my surprise. Some rounds were pretty even. I discovered sticking my swords in to him to drain his HP much faster than he did and props to those characters for sticking with the fight despite a SWORD BEING STABBED THROUGH THEM. Also the character designs were pretty awful. Really it was funny is the only good thing I can say. What a sad way to see off the PS2 era. But I guess it can be like a pattern. We started with Mortal Kombat, we reached the middle with Mortal Kombat, and we shall end with Mortal Kombat.

I loved Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance. It was the start of one of my favorite storyarcs in the MK series. The opening segment and WTFness of them killing Liu Kang before the game even starts was amazing. MK4 has it beat gameplay wise, but Mortal Kombat was one of many series that just didn't translate well to full blown 3D. Its probably the reason they merged 2D and 3D into the latter games.

February 16th - Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax

So this is a recent purchase and I hadn't played it too much as I was waiting for Fightbruary. We were supposed to play DOA: 3 today but we don't have a second Xbox controller so we moved this one to today instead of later in the week. So it was pretty new for both of us although I had played a little bit and figured out a few things.

http://i.imgur.com/9gHFYPs.jpg

I won the most matches although it was close to even. Sharky likes to find a move and spam it, which I guess is understandable because I managed to figure out more moves and special moves and things. I did win a fair few rounds though, even in the matches I lost. But, if you were wondering about my fingers, WELL! I smacked the crap out of my hand yesterday by accident and it hurt so bad I almost passed out. It's now bruised and swollen and has been acting up all day. Add that to thumb soreness and I got quite frustrated with the whole thing. I guess a part of me wanted to do better than I did because this was finally a game where I could have an advantage and not totally get owned. But it is what it is~

http://i.imgur.com/zpjrLw9.jpg

The game itself was pretty fun. It takes characters from the animez and mangaz and video gamez and puts them against each other in fighting matches. You also get support characters to sometimes help you out and sometimes annoyingly fail at helping you out. There's also this adorable character named Tomoka Minato who is a super star basketball player who can turn the opponent in to a basketball and she is A++. There's a lot of support characters and also a Sonic the hedgehog background. The attacks are also pretty silly and ridiculous. I did enjoy it though and will play properly soon.

February 17th - Soul Calibur IV

So now we moved on to our last Soul Calibur game, and the worst of the bunch. They made all of the characters look pretty much the same and the customization can make them look identical if you want to. On top of all looking alike, they all look different from what they did in their previous iterations as well. The bright side is I made a custom look for Sophitia and I LOVE IT and wish I could show it to you guys. Btw, if it wasn't clear, the images shown in this thread are not of what we're playing :p

http://i.imgur.com/G7Bte9j.jpg

It's still a fun game though and there are some super pretty battle arenas, not that we got to fully experience them because the random liked to give us one particular arena every second match. But there is a large character roster, including Amy, a character I really like. Overall the game was actually pretty easy to get the hang of once we turned off the accidental taunt shoulder button, but sometimes the controls could be unresponsive.

http://i.imgur.com/IgEIByX.jpg

Keeping up the tradition, I reigned supreme as a Soul Calibur champion. I don't know why. Maybe my gameplay style just meshes well with this series. I used the handicap at first but then turned it completely off and still stayed pretty on top of things, with characters I didn't know well nonetheless. But sharky put up a fight and he had my number for quite a few rounds. He liked to ring me out a whole bunch. It was fun, but definitely not the best the series has to offer. Also, the ladies end up in their underwear way too often :nonono:. I might try SCV just because it's super cheap at this point so why not. playing Darth Vader was a thing, also

Ugh, this game. The beginning of the end. And proof that Namco and Team Soul have no idea what people want. This was back in the day when reservations and pre-paying for a game were fairly uncommon in my town, and for me in general. And this is one of the first ones I took the plunge for. And one of the only games I've ever traded back in for store credit to get other games. Not immediately, I tried for over a year to enjoy the game, but just couldn't. There were a few redeeming qualities, the graphics were fairly decent. It was pretty. But ugh. The terrible loss and addition of characters, the weird changes to some fighting styles, that damn tower that was like the ONLY THING YOU COULD DO IN SINGLE PLAYER. Soul Calibur 2 and especially 3 totally spoiled its fans. Tons of characters, tons of decent fighting styles, tons of things to do. Both a story and chronicle mode, as well as generic arcade if you want. And the cut scenes were actually rendered. There were paths and choices. Then they decide that the best you get is a picture. Not even a color picture. They obviously thought people only played Soul Calibur 3 in online matches. Since that's like the only thing you can do with a fighting game, right? Because those online matches on the PS2 were the best yo. Fuck you Namco. Fuck you Team Soul. Get over Ivy's boobs and make a real game. I need a beer.. lol /rant

February 18th - King of Fighters XIII

Today we played King of Fighters XIII which is much like NeoGeo Battle Coliseum in that it takes a bunch of SNK characters and meshes them together in to one game. In this one, you play as teams of three. There's no tagging though, you pick the order you want and once one is defeated, the other comes out. Once all three are defeated, you've won the round.

http://i.imgur.com/mwIQp5V.jpg

We tied 6-6, although I was using a handicap. It's appropriate now with the injured hand! Some fights were pretty down to the wire and even the ones I lost I overall did pretty well. EXCEPT for one fight when he used King and beat three of my characters with his one. I have no idea why he's so good with characters named King, but it is annoying! Overall I think I am improving and getting a handle on things more now. Not always, but I'm better at KoF XIII than when I last played it.

http://i.imgur.com/HtI6Ud8.jpg

It's a fun game. Not a button masher game though, you need some precise inputs and a lot of arrow button pushes. I like Athena and her PSYCHO BALL~~ Which I actually managed to pull out a few times. She glitters and everything. I also found out she's unlockable in NeoGeo battle coliseum and you can bet I'm going to go back and play it again and unlock her. PSYCHO BALL

February 19th - Tekken 6

Another day, another Tekken. I suppose the shocking thing here is that I actually won by one match thanks to a generous handicap. I never got good enough to take down the handicap, and it generally floated between 15 and 20 extra points. But I tried my best and that's what counts!

http://i.imgur.com/Vy5fTkb.jpg

Tekken 6 is a fun game and my favourite Tekken game. I don't enjoy it as much here though because all I can do is press buttons and hope to pull something out, and I'm fighting against someone who can do long combos and stuff. It's not really fun, I'm going to be honest. Kind of bums me out, even though I won. After Fightbruary and the last Tekken game next week, I'll stick to fighting the computer on easy :P

There's a huge cast of characters in this. 40 to be exact. That's 40 fights with AT LEAST two rounds. It's a time investment. Tekken Tag 2 also has a massive cast but you get to play two at a time, so I'm not sure how much time it will take compared to this. It's a time sink. But you get to do custom outfits and things and I made an adorable outfit for Lili and a really pretty one for Anna that I got to use :D There's also some really nice backgrounds!

Sharky, the move spammer? Oh, I hate it when people spam a move over and over! Especially if it is projectile spamming.

Hey, if it's a zoning character, I'm going to use the moves that play to their strength. Not every character is a rush-down style. :colbert:
My girlfriend haaaates spammers. Maybe its the more professional fighter in me, but I've never really been bothered by someone using one move all the time. I kinda feel like if I get beat by just one move, that's my own fault. Jump over it, block it, counter it, something. There's always a way and its your job to find out how to get around it if you want to win. I highly doubt any of these fights relied solely one one solitary move, but generally in my experience, the person doing that to me only wins 1 round. Either I figure out what to do about that move, or the character their using is just an OP boss and it wasn't my fault anyway lol

Tekken 6 is my favourite fighting game, as I think I've mentioned. I just look back on my time playing it so fondly, especially with couch co-op as its one of the few games outside of sports sims that me and my friends all got into and practiced. In my prime I was able to play a pretty mean Asuka.

February 20th - Aquapazza

Today we played one of my favourite 2D fighting games, Aquapazza! The game is just so over the top and ridiculous in terms of story and moves and I just think it's a lot of fun. It has a lot of really bright environments, a large cast of female characters, and simple button commands, all things I am fond of!

http://i.imgur.com/8XujZrP.jpg

In this game you get both a playable fighter and a support fighter, who will help you in battle by doing certain moves. Either attacking or healing or blocking or whatever. The bum thing is that if you get hit, your support characters move gets cancelled, and you have to wait a while to charge them back up. The cast isn't super large, if you don't include the supports, so it didn't take long to finish.

http://i.imgur.com/acGshk1.jpg

I won something like 8-6. It was very close and I think the main reason I won was because I was using the simplified controls and he was using the standard controls. Otherwise it probably would have been pretty even. I think most of the characters are from visual novels and there's a wide range of play styles and it was pretty fun!

February 21st - Mortal Kombat Komplete Edition

Also known as Mortal Kombat 9. I wasn't super looking forward to this one because the story mode kicks my butt every single time, but apparently in VS I am not too bad. I won a bunch of rounds in the beginning but it evened out more in the end. I might have won a few more matches, I'm not sure exactly.

http://i.imgur.com/Q5B1zY4.jpg

It was fun. The gameplay was pretty smooth and easy to do. I found myself often coincidentally doing the right moves/jumps at the right time to save my butt. I needed to start guarding more by the end of it when sharky got better at beating me, and well, I'm not a good blocker. I'm more of an offensive play style. So that part was challenging.

http://i.imgur.com/cMU6vgt.jpg

Lots of characters, a decent amount of female character, all of whom have ridiculous cleavage that we think is just copy/pasted from girl to girl. Jade was fun to use and I am sad she's not in X. Which I'll probably have to play using my Vita as a controller and that's going to be rough. In the meantime though, this game was a lot of fun and I enjoyed it. There were some really close, tense rounds. It was also neat seeing some of the stages from the first two MK games we played at the beginning of the month!

February 22nd - Dead or Alive 5: Last Round

So today was supposed to be Virtua Fighter 5 but alas the game didn't want to work and so instead we played Dead or Alive 5. These things happen, so we'll be buying a new, cheap PS3 fighting game this weekend to fill our empty slot. Probably either Skull Girls or Injustice: Gods Among Us. We will think about it!

http://i.imgur.com/Z9rMU9L.jpg

This game is a lot of fun. I really enjoy it, it's one of my favourite fighting games, lots of ladies, lots of costumes, easy and smooth gameplay, nice arenas. It's just a shame half of the ladies need to be half-naked and it's also a challenge sorting through all the borderline porn to get some regular images of this game. But it's really a ton of fun and I always enjoy playing it.

http://i.imgur.com/OkPfmYf.jpg

sharkson won the most rounds but I put up a good fight and actually wasn't half bad at the game. Most of the matches I lost were actually very close and it was common for one of us to win with just a sliver of health left. It made for some good, tense matches. AND this has some Virtua Fighter characters in it, so it was a good tie in. A lot of fun, great game, good matches.

Despite the perv, it is still one of my favorite fighting game franchises. I recently acquired Last Round for PS4 on the cheap myself, and though I've played like every sequel leading up to it, this is actually the first one I've owned. And it's like coming home. If only Soul Calibur could have stayed the course, and I'd have two fantastic 3D fighting game franchises. But at least Street Fighter kinda sorta keeps it real, and I can have a comfortable old 2D fighter and a comfortable old 3D fighter

I should go unlock some opera dresses for Sophitia ... er- or Helena, or whoever she is :3

February 23rd - Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 Full Burst

So if that isn't a long enough title for you, I don't know what is. Tonight we broke the tradition of using every character because, well... THERE ARE SO MANY CHARACTERS, YOU GUYS. We don't even have them all unlocked and, discounting duplicate characters (like the 4 Narutos you can play), we still had like 40. I like large casts of characters but that's just too much. I'm sick, I'm tired, I was at school all day. It was too much.

http://i.imgur.com/tVNBKqz.jpg

Especially for this game since, honestly, it's not that great. It's kind of an RPG/Fighting game, so the battle system is not... the best, I guess. It's perfectly fun for a few battles here and there, but overall it's kind of meh. It's super easy to spam special moves, some support characters are way better than others. Ino is best. Other than a select few, most projectiles are awful and there are limited combos. Just meh, I guess.

http://i.imgur.com/FDKqJMm.jpg

I won. It was something like 8-7 or something like that. Most of the rounds were very close. Even with that though it wasn't as exciting as some of the other fighting games. But if you like Naruto, then be my guest. You'll have SO MANY characters to choose fro so more than likely your favourite character will be available. I'm still trekking through the story mode, slowly, which is a bit better. But just as a fighting game? Not really that good.

I have fun with it, and I think that considering all the stuff from the show they're trying to incorporate the fighting system isn't too bad, it's just very different from a....real fighting game. Sorry if I'm hurting feelings.

I just did the quick math, and there's 88 character choices on that screen. 7 of them are support only, and probably another 20 are just different versions of the same characters, but still. That probably leaves around 50 characters.

February 24th - Arcana Heart 3: Love Max!!!!!

Hard to believe Fightbruary is almost over! Well today we played another one of my favourite 2D fighting games, Arcana Heart 3! It's entirely female characters and it's just so over the top and ridiculous, and I love it. There's hearts and sentient water bubbles and vampire roller skaters and ninjas and magicians. Just so much fun.

http://i.imgur.com/uKz8V4p.jpg

So I think I won this one according to sharky. It was pretty even. I think in the end it was 12 to 11 or something like that. I won with a lot of my favourite characters, which is great, but lost with one of them. Some characters I just absolutely cannot do anything useful with and he was whipping out killer combos.

http://i.imgur.com/PxPB2di.png

Some of that might be the different controls. I use Simple and he uses Normal. While Simple is easier to do certain things, it's much harder to put together combos. It is easier in Simple mode to use your support elemental thing, although with Simple you're locked in to their default support, whereas in Normal you are free to choose the one you want. It affects your attacks and stuff. Anyways, it was really fun, I enjoyed it!

February 25th - BlazBlue Chrono Phantasma

So I wasn't super pumped about this game. I don't like it very much. Although, to be fair, I found it more enjoyable than I had imagined. I think a lot of it was story and stuff. I didn't enjoy the story. I personally found it rather fanfictiony and pretentious, but. A lot of people really like it so don't let my opinion dissuade you if it looks like something you might enjoy. Even the gameplay though, while it was fine, was nothing special or amazing and was kind of just boring.

http://i.imgur.com/g0KjYop.jpg

So I won by a huge margin. I was on the stylish controls, which are the easier controls, because I really dislike the technical controls of this game. So I probably wouldn't have won by as much as I did had I switched. Don't worry though, he will more than make it up to me tomorrow when we play the last Tekken game on the list. Oh boy! Perhaps my Fightbruary win streak is finally coming to an end.

http://i.imgur.com/LYFJ5cD.jpg

While I dislike a lot of things about this game, there are a few characters I really enjoy. Platinum-the-Trinity is just so over the top and ridiculous and I love her. It's literally a 3-way split personality and I love those characters. Her attacks and animations are also very goofy and fun, which I really like. A few other fun ones to use. So it wasn't too bad but I won't be racing to play this again anytime soon.

February 26th - Tekken Tag Tournament 2

So today was our last Tekken game and, indeed, one of our final games. Three left after this, wow. So I was initially very nervous and very disappointed because this game DIDN'T ALLOW FOR HANDICAPS. And considering how badly I get beaten in the other Tekkens WITH a handicap... well, I was pretty nervous.

http://i.imgur.com/NnZg013.jpg

It ended up, amazingly, better than I expected. The final count was something like 17-15, so it was pretty close to even. The last few rounds were more goofing around rounds because I wanted to use Xiaoyu, Miharu, Lili, and Anna a few more times, as they are my favourites. I was happy to see Miharu back, she doesn't get to be in too many games. I even won a round against the Kings! That was a totally unexpected fluke, but I'll take it. sharky is still a beast using Jin though, I can't move or attack or I'll get countered and destroyed.

http://i.imgur.com/t6RGfND.jpg

So I hadn't played as much as I thought because some of the ladies didn't even have custom outfits, which was a bummer. The customization options are a bit limited though, I fine. So I guess I gave up. BUT Miharu's outfit that I made for her was adorable and gorgeous and I'm super happy I had it. Shame I can't share it but I really liked it. Especially her shoes. She had this cute little pink heels. And I gave her a cute hairo and some jean shorts and a jacket. You don't care. I might play some more to unlock more stuff. There's also some gorgeous arenas. I especially like the Arctic Dream one (not pictured).

February 27th - Injustice: Gods Among Us Ultimate Edition

So we were debating between Skullgirls Encore and this game but they both cost the same amount and Skullgirls only had 9 characters, plus 5 DLC characters that cost $5 each, whereas this game has a lot more characters so... yeah. We went with this one. While I'm not a huge comic book fan and I didn't know many of the characters, some of them were still a lot of fun to use. Harley Quinn was my favourite, she's very acrobatic, but not very strong.

http://i.imgur.com/yTn62nU.png

So in this game you get two life bars instead of two rounds. There was a good variety of characters. In the end, he won by one round because we decided to do another fun bonus round at the end when it was tied up. It was really close though and I did much better than I was expecting to. We both went in to this one blind because neither of us knew how to play or had played before. We also had totally different play styles so he was good with characters I wasn't and vice versa. This led to some Catwoman disappointment.

http://i.imgur.com/ClJDPvp.jpg

The moves are a bit inconsistent, I feel. It's also a bit still and guarding isn't as responsive as it should be. You can use your environment though, which I really liked and was actually very good at. I probably wouldn't have won nearly as much as I did if not for that. There were also way too many Batman backgrounds though and not too many of them were that pretty looking. Overall it was a fun game for the price and I look forward to doing a proper playthrough, but not my favourite fighting game.

February 28th - Dragon Ball Xenoverse

Second last day of Fightbruary! It goes by so quickly. So today we played the two player mode of Dragon Ball Xenoverse. Sharky had never played this game before so we started out with a tutorial thing and then he got a lot better as time went on. It also took a bit to figure out how to do the two-player because I hadn't done it before, but we got it sorted, no worries, you guys. I do get to play MKX with my Vita tomorrow if we get that to work. Woo that'll probably be terrible.

http://i.imgur.com/1A9NWMg.jpg

I didn't have all of the characters unlocked and there are some duplicates like 3 Friezas, so taking those out it was still a pretty decent cast. Earlier this month I rushed through some story to unlock Android 18 and Videl because there are BARELY ANY LADY CHARACTERS AT ALL, which is actually really frustrating. They can throw in Hercule who can't fight, but they can't add more women? Ugh. With my character it made 3 women total. But we get Raspberry and other mooks so... you know

http://i.imgur.com/lp8xxqB.jpg

I won. Wasn't surprising because I played the game a lot more. He still did really well though and it wasn't a blow out. The characters aren't balanced, they aren't supposed to be, it more follows the storyline. The gameplay is also much much different than the average fighting game. So it was a nice change of pace and it was pretty fun. There was only one arena for the local two player though, which was kind of boring. But oh well. Fun change of pace, some pretty fun gameplay and some funny scenes.

I had a jack of all trades to start with, and then absolutely fell in love with the general melee combat, and other than a kamehameha for distance, I have a super heavy punch, and a multi-kick combo that was so much fun to pummel people with, especially going kaioken x 3 (or x 20 if you're crazy). I'd plug in my external hard drive, load up some hard rock or hard techno and just go to town. The game is way more fun than it has any right to be xD

My girlfriend and I are still seriously considering a re-purchase for PS4..

February 29th - Mortal Kombat X

And this concludes Fightbruary. We started with Mortal Kombat and ended with Mortal Kombat. We also ended the PS2 era with Mortal Kombat. It's kind of nice, little bookends with one of the most iconic fighting game series ever. Tomorrow or Wednesday I'll also post up some special stuffs and that end and whatever. Thanks for following along guys and I hope you had fun :jess: I did have fun but I'm also glad its over. It was a lot of fighting game.

http://i.imgur.com/X7po8yr.png

So MKX is a pretty good fighting game. We had about 22 characters or something, not exact number but something like that. No DLC characters. Each has three fighting styles to choose from. We didn't do all of the fighting styles, just each character, and it took a good while. It was fun and it was about tied. I really like Mileena and Kitana in this one, they have nice hair.

http://i.imgur.com/jqVYNlk.jpg

BUT we don't have a second PS4 controller so we had to use my Vita. And while it was neat that it can do that and it was super easy to set up and it was nice to have a little mini screen as well, there's a delay and its just not as good. So sharky used the Vita as a sort of handicap for me, and that ended up with the matches about even. And that's the end of Fightbruary

Credits and Closings!

So here's a bit of info for Fightbruary. I wrote down both of our favourite and least favourite games. Also the biggest surprise means a game that was not our favourite but that we ended up liking more than expected, and biggest disappointment is a game we may have still liked, but that we liked less than expected.

Favourite game
Pumpkin: Dead or Alive 5. When you take out the clothes tearing and boob juggle and put them in normal outfits, it's a solid game. It's responsive and fluid, there's a good selection of characters, a lot of female characters, it's a lot of fun, stage traps are not gimmicky but are well done.
sharky: Tekken 3. It's one of the fighting games he has played most and he really enjoys it, even to this day.

Least favourite game
Pumpkin: Blazblue. The game just bugs me. It's not super fun, the colours are annoying. Not for me.
sharky: Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance. Not a great fighting game.

Biggest Surprise
Pumpkin: Bloody Roar 3 and NeoGeo Battle Coliseum. I was expecting Bloody Roar to feel a lot more gimmicky but it was super fun. NeoGeo reminded me of KoFXIII which I find too technical, but it surprised me and I quite enjoyed it.
sharky: Tekken 4 and Soul Calibur III. While he still doesn't like them as much as some of the other entries in the series, they're better than he remembered them to be and gave them credit for.

Biggest Disappointment
Pumpkin: Guilty Gear X2. I was super excited to try it because of all of the interesting characters, but it wasn't very fun.
sharky: Dengeki Bunko. Was a good game but not as good as my other 2D anime fighters.

Tally time! Who was the winner? It was obviously sharky but let's go through it

1 - Mortal Kombat (SNES) sharky
2 - Mortal Kombat II (SNES) sharky
3 - Battle Arena Toshinden (PS1) Tie
4 - Tekken 1, 2, and 3 (PS1) sharky
5 - Soul Calibur II (PS2) Pumpkin
6 - Dead or Alive 2 Hardcore (PS2) sharky
7 - Bloody Roar 3 (PS2) sharky
8 - Tekken 4 (PS2) sharky
9 - Virtua Fighter 4 (PS2) Pumpkin
10 - Soul Calibur III (PS2) Pumpkin
11 - Tekken 5 (PS2) sharky
12 - NeoGeo Battle Coliseum (PS2) Pumpkin
13 - Guilty Gear X2 (PS2) Tie
14 - Tekken Tag Tournament (PS2) sharky
15 - Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance (PS2) sharky
16 - Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax (PS3) Pumpkin
17 - Soul Calibur IV (PS3) Pumpkin
18 - King of Fighters XIII (PS3) Tie
19 - Tekken 6 (PS3) sharky
20 - Aquapazza (PS3) Pumpkin
21 - Mortal Kombat (PS3) Tie
22 - Dead or Alive 5 Last Round (PS3) sharky
23 - Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 (PS3) Pumpkin
24 - Arcana Heart 3 Love Max (PS3) Pumpkin
25 - BlazBlue Chrono Phantasma (PS3) Pumpkin
26 - Tekken Tag Tournament 2 (PS3) sharky
27 - Injustice: Gods Among Us (PS3) sharky
28 - Dragonball Xenoverse (PS3) Pumpkin
29 - Mortal Kombat X (PS4) Tie

sharky: 13
Pumpkin: 11
Tie: 5

So it wasn't the blowout I was expecting but I made a pretty good comeback by the end! Thanks for following and I had a lot of fun :jess:
