So I've never played an Ivalice game apart from FFXII. Yet apparently it is a distant prequel to most of the others in which most of the awesome stuff and people we see are long since dead. Entire races wiped out.
So it seems like taking control of the world away from the Occuria probably wasn't the smartest thing... It just kind of fucked everything up.
Nah. When it gets to the FFTA real world, you see stuff is pretty good.

Considering we don't know where or even if FFTA falls in the actual Ivalice Timeline, that means Vagrant Story is technically the final chapter and that world is somewhat "better" than at least FFTactics. Course even VS canoncity is somewhat debatable, seeing how Matsuno originally intended it to be a stand alone title and later Shrug of God connected it to Ivalice properly when he was working on FFXII.
Though it should be noted that it's the Cataclysm in the timeline that marks the decline of Ivalice. The issue is that we don't really know what the Cataclysm is. Most source books leave it a blank slate because obviously, as the name implies, not much of a record was left over from that time period. We do know it happens sometime after St. Ajora's time, so it may have something to do with the Lucavi/Espers but it could just as well be the Occurians themselves trying to take back the reigns.

Even if we're to assume it's fate being in the hands of mortals that results in the decline, better to die free than live slaves to the will of false gods.
