While there is only one version available in the West, I know some members have played the original via emulation, so which versions have you played and which one is your favorite if you've played both?
I've only played the DS remake and don't really have any intention to play the original

The DS version seems fine, to be honest. Why would you play the older model?
Because due to serious gameplay changes, the two are effectively two different games

I played through the DS version & only a little bit of the Famicom version.
Like Fynn says, they're pretty different, not just graphically. The DS/Steam version add more story & there are gameplay differences.
I just find the DS/Steam version more enjoyable.

Interesting. So it was more of a remake than an updated port?
No one ever called it a port. The graphical update is enough to make it not a port.

Yep, here's a list (http://home.eyesonff.com/showthread.php/157550-What-are-the-differences) of some of the changes.

Just about all my time on this has been the DS version, I've gotten about half way through on the NES version. Nowadays the it isn't NES graphics that deter me, but the 'clunkyness' of the UI.

I've played through the NES version twice. I've started a DS playthrough, but hated it so much I stopped very early.

I've played the NES version, DS version, and PSP version. The NES version is contender for my second favorite title in the franchise, while the remakes are . . . not.
