View Full Version : Midgar Mist and FF6
Midgar Mist

I'm about to begin play.
I've decided to start a thread about it. It serves a dual purpose: game advice and story based chat.
WARNING: THOSE WHO HAVE YET TO PLAY THIS GAME PLEASE DO NOT READ ANY FURTHER. MAJOR SPOILERS LIE AHEAD
I've decided to grind up my characters as I go. My initial strategy will be to focus this tactic on every character except Strago, Gau and Relm.
So....its 6am. I've woken up. I'm at a loose end.
Time to replay FF6....

It doesn't matter because the game just isn't that hard, but you ultimately make your party much weaker by leveling them up early without having good Espers equipped.

I shall stop levelling Terra right now in that case. Thanks for the tip.
I'm currently within the Caves of Narshe still but I shall keep Terra at Level 5 in that case.

DID YOU USE MY 1 BIT OF ADVICE :stare:
Too bad you leave out Strago and Relm as Strago has one of the coolest skill sets and Relm has the highest natural magic, so they can both be really good mages, which is really handy later on, as magic is basically everything in the lategame :monster:

Yeah, from what I remember, Espers let you increase characters stats whenever they level up so its worth waiting till you get a few decent ones.

right. so who wants to be Sabin, Gau or Gogo or Umaro?
Midgar you are Terra.

Yay! I love Terra! She's so pretty.
I shall take on board what you guys say and who knows? I might change my mind on who I wanna use. That is still a work in progress so, teachers teach me more! I've just escaped from Figaro (I love Edgar and his Castle with a failsafe) and I'm en route to South Figaro.

your playing the ps1 version, so you can either: Not buy the sprint shoes, since you can hold O to sprint. or buy them to emulate the olden day version.

Right ok. Someone tell me how to time Sabins Blitz attack. There's no way I'm getting past this Dad Killing asshole otherwise. (Forgotten this bit)
Galuf
03-28-2016, 05:01 PM
Just select blitz on him then L R L then boom.
Midgar Mist
03-28-2016, 05:08 PM
Tried that. It didn't work :-/
FFNut

With blitz it's like a fighting game. So basically you want it to be smooth. Try d-pad left, d-pad right, d-pad left, then action button. It should unleash pummel.
edit: or you can hit him with 10,000 damage to get him out too.
Midgar Mist
03-28-2016, 07:35 PM
errr....what Hits at 10,000 at that early stage. meh! im popping over to youtube to see if anybody has streamed this bit. Back soon!
Ok...checked it. If I hit pause at the right time I can study it better...it will take a little time but...will just keep tryin' with this one
So....what's just after this? Any strategies you wanna throw at me?
FFNut

I like being about level 10 in that place. People who say don't grind up are half right, as unless you are wanting to min and max stats for an extreme low level playthrough (I wouldn't recommend it for enjoyment) it's not that big of a deal.
Midgar Mist
03-28-2016, 08:50 PM
So...any further tips any of you wanna offer at this point?
UPDATE: I had fun with white water rafting for a while, then the infamous Ultros showed up (he MUST be infamous, why else would his fiendish little character sprite appear in the EoFF emotes?)

Yes, I've discovered this split story. FFNut recommends I do the Sabin story last if I want to work on Gau.

Doing Sabin last will fill the Velt with more monsters for Gau to Leap and be able to Rage is why I do Sabin last.

Question: So i fought vargas and stole Mythril claws. died, tried again. and only got to steal a tonic.
wtf happened to the claws??

Aww sweetie, your so good at this game as well. I'm sure it wont affect things.
So I've been around. Just found out where Terra flew off to. Now I've got me some Magicite (about time). Zozo is one weird little riddle of a town. Why does it look like a bomb has hit it?
Could someone point me in the direction of a decent list for Sabin's Blitz attacks? He's devised a new one, that's all I know.
Also when can I pick up Mog? The FAQ didn't say exactly when in the game I'm supposed to save him. I've been in Narshe twice and I know nothing about this business of saving him over a hairpin.

Enemies carry both common and rare items but will only drop/have stolen one of them. So basically the RNG rewarded you and then screwed you.

The town was basically built by the poor people kicked out of Jidoor, though I prefer the fan theory that the rich simply moved out of Zozo to their country homes in Jidoor. Would at least explain the skyscraper and tall apartment buildings.

If you go into the menu under magic, you should be able to select Blitz and have it tell you the command. Otherwise, I would check the forum front site.

Mog becomes available after you get full control of the airship and have visited the Magitch Lab.

Update: I've been to the heart of the empire. I've lost Celes but regained Terra (why can't I have both yet?). I've flown around and picked up some more rages for Gau. My current team is him, terra, edgar and locke. I'm completely ignoring Setzer and resting Sabin for now. But I've hit another snag....I'm stuck in the dungeon between that base and the esper world. I've just passed the save point where those drop down ninjas spring me. Down the stairs, try to find my way through that tunnel and....stuck. Bah......
Scratch that....just jiggled it a bit more and got through.
These 16 bit era dungeons can be a little clunky, what with them being 2D and all. I know there's a split party one that drives me insane sometime after this.....I shall be using exclaimation marks in my posts at that stage I think.....
Any tips anyone wants to offer about the Esper realm?
FFNut
04-01-2016, 06:16 AM
You don't really get anything but Terra's back story there. You will head to Thamasa next with Locke and Terra. Meet a old friend there too. My advice in the next section is steal with Locke and the Phantom Espers works great in the area. It is also a great place to grind if needed.
Midgar Mist
04-01-2016, 07:08 AM
Wait....ummm don't I need to go to Vector now? The ship has just crash landed near Maranda if I'm not mistaken. And I was unaware that one doesn't enter the esper realm. THAT wouldve been so much cooler than a bunch of espers flying out in attack mode and walling up the entrance. At least Kefka got blown away for now...and those imperial jerks are quaking in their boots for once ha ha!
So yeah I think its Vector next isn't it?
FFNut

04-01-2016, 07:54 PM
Whoops! I didnt. I kinda knew when i was doing it i maybe shouldnt have just guessed at answers. Based on the 14 people i got round to talking to the troops pulled out of South Figaro and Doma. I thought that didnt seem.....enough.
Also I hear Mog is avaliable. I went up to Narshe after the Magitek Factory and Mog was still just standing there saying "Ku........po". When can i choose him over the hairpin mentioned in that badly written FAQ thread thats now closed?
FFNut
04-01-2016, 08:13 PM
You can get two really powerful relics bye the questions and talking and fighting with 24 soldiers.
In Narshe there was that treasure room with one locked chest. Go grab that chest and Lonewolf the pickpocket will take the trasure. Follow him up through the mines to the Frozen Espers and he will hold Mog's hostage. When Mog fights back they both go off the edge of the cliff. Walk up to Mog to save him and choose Mog. Walk up to Lonewolf to grab the hairpin.
Midgar Mist
04-01-2016, 08:44 PM
Right....may have to back track. I did create a second save file while in Narshe just in case. I can grab Mog and try and talk to 24 soldiers as well. I really really wanna see how great Mog is
:save::mogumogu:
FFNut
04-01-2016, 08:50 PM
I like Mog but he isn't really a go to guy for me. However to get all his dances you need to grab him now and do a walk around the Lette River into the velt then the serpent trench. Then reclimb mount Koltz. He makes a great leader in the second half with his personal relic where you won't get in random encounters making getting Locke early doable. He is a ok Dragoon however.
Midgar Mist
04-02-2016, 05:27 PM
Did the sea trench but not Koltz. Gonna skip that now as its too late to go back now. As long as I get the moogle charm at some point I'm fine. Oh and wasn't up to the 24 soldiers challenge. And I'm going more towards Kanno's views on who I like. I don't feel like putting that much more work into Gau in terms of his rages on this playthrough.( Maybe next time when I know more). What I have done is strike off Setzer (I hate characters with slots) and Cyan (cos I remembered how much I hate Swordtech, sorry Galuf)
FFNut
04-02-2016, 05:42 PM
Ya Cyan is a really strong guy, however his load speed drags the game on to a point of can't deal. For the 24 soldiers, the key is stay out of the room with Kefka jailed as that eats up a ton of time on you. Ya Gau is a very advanced character. Time spent is the reward so it's time spent to how much time you wish to invest.
Galuf
04-02-2016, 05:44 PM
i might use Gau for once. ill try a new team for this one
Midgar Mist
04-02-2016, 09:39 PM
Yeah go for it Galuf! Let me know how well Gau performs. I like Gau much better than I used to and I value him fairly well but this time I'm gonna try out other powerful characters. I like my magic and big hitters so Terra, Celes, Relm, Mog, Edgar, Sabin are my top players. I'm not completely ruling out Locke and Shadow either (Shadow is such a pain with all those disappearing acts he does, its what let's him down for me a little)
FFNut
04-02-2016, 09:49 PM
Shadow will stay for good if you "don't jump" right away. Trying not to give spoilers. If you jump to soon he dies and is gone for good. Edgar falls off in the second half yet his drill is still very useful. As for magic... Relm is a goddess there. Without the Esper power ups she is the best magic user in game. When you get the fake mustache she is a battle control God!
Midgar Mist
04-02-2016, 10:07 PM
Well I know about the Shadow thing already. Ive seen it accidentally on walkthroughs but I do kinda remember it from my first playthrough. Definitely wanna keep the guy so I will wait for him.

Yup he will be back. Next time he brings a pal with him who is just as annoying.
Midgar Mist
04-02-2016, 10:45 PM
But seriously though, what is interesting about Ultros is that he's this subplot villain who seems to have no allegiance to Kefka, he's just....out for his own selfish ends.:ultros:
FFNut
04-02-2016, 11:19 PM
I think he was just comic relief and to put a boss in places that didn't fit anything else. You see him in the second half too but are not forced into a fight with him.
He gets a job and everything.
Midgar Mist
04-03-2016, 02:19 AM
Yeah he's a mischevious one. But Kefka is also a bit of a comic villian himself. And he's the only FF villain I can think of who is 100 per cent human to begin with. Kinda makes the whole thing worse in that respect.
So anyway: Square seemed to be having some kind of love affair with annoying floating ruins during this period. Midgar Mist is currently tired of seemingly dead end dungeons, and the random monsters are particularly annoying up here.
FFNut
04-03-2016, 03:48 AM
Kefka started as a human but turned into so much more. Ya once again Phantom Esper is your best friend if you are on the floating continent. Locke can also steal Genji Gloves up there as well off dragons. It's a 1/16 chance at grabbing one. The only thing that will mess you up bad up there is Ninja's. Have a few spells ready for them. Also they will take away your phantom invisablity. If you took Strago up you can learn his 1000 needle Lore up there too which is a easy 1000 damage also.
Midgar Mist
04-03-2016, 01:40 PM
So.....couldnt enlarge the map Kanno provided so had to consult youtube to bust on through the dead end.
My current questions are twofold:
1. Is it possible for Terra to stay in Esper form for longer? If so how?
2. Is there anything i can learn that will make magic affect all allies/enemies?
FFNut
04-03-2016, 02:49 PM
Question 1: Terra's morph ability is based on MP earned at the end of battle that is the same points earned for esper's magic. Not sure the formula though.
Question 2: use the triggers to target all in battle for all spells and for healing in the menu. If they can hit multiples the trigger will allow you to hit them. This isn't well explained but works from the beginning.
Galuf

did confuse me going to FF7 afterwards, i like the trigger thingy better

So.....I'm regretting taking Locke along for my second time of doing the rounds of this crazy floating island. It means i have to pay the price of starting this annoying stage again, just to get Sabin. I squeaked by with Shadow, Relm, Edgar and the aforementioned Locke in that big battle just before reaching Kefka. Then, just when I think i can run out of this prick of a place, I'm stopped by MANDATORY random battles. MAN-DA-TORY! Then I get to this thing thats activated near a shiny star like thing which has frigging auto reflect! Arrrrgh! How do i get out of this place on time and alive!?
FFNut
04-03-2016, 08:03 PM
You should have Celes with her Runic at that spot, and Edger's drill and chainsaw can make short work of him too. Another trick would be cast reflect on yourself and then attack yourself with magic reflecting the magic to him.
Midgar Mist
04-03-2016, 09:22 PM
Hmmm...did i miss the chainsaw? I looked around for another Edgar tool but didnt come across one. I have carbuncle so reflect shouldnt be a problem.

Ive landed
In the World of Ruin. I remember poor Celes being on her own.
I shall find as many main characters as possible myself.
I will need help on the location of the Moogle Charm (will try and find Mog myself). I know where Umaro and those extra espers are so thats a start. I think if I wanna get Gogo thats gonna be the tricky one.
Im also glad I know that "the world is square", it saves me getting pissed off again.
FFNut

Yes there is Galuf when you feed him fish only feed him the fast fish. Also if you can't find a fast fish talk to him and look again. Never feed him a slow fish. However saving him does nothing as he spends the rest of the game walking around that house alone. It's almost kinder to kill him.
I never managed to save him :gator:

Congrats on making it to the World of Ruin.
Dont congratulate me yet, during my first and second play i have yet to struggle with the World of Balance
It was this World that had me screaming and running for the hills gameplay wise.
I will say, its very atmospheric. Its clever how they captured the desolation.
And, Cid dying should be the way it is. Its sad but....it wouldnt have tugged at my heart strings if he'd lived. He's ill and this world is in pain....it just makes more sense.
Anyway, ive rallied some of the troops. Ive found Sabin, Edgar and Setzer so far (Terra was being a stubborn bitch when I popped into Mobliz but I think I remember not having to do anything special to change her mind)
So now...its to the cave to bag a new airship! Thats where airships hang out apparently....

You can only do damage to the demon version of it. Any damage done to the female version doesn't really count towards beating it so you have a short window of time to really inflict damage on it.

Lakshmi teaches all of the cure spells at a boosted rate whereas Alexander is focused primarily on support magic but also teaches Holy. Honestly Phoenix is the prize White Magic Esper since it's the only Esper that teaches Arise and Reraise (easily one of the most useful spells in the game) as well as teaching Curaga and Firaga at a faster rate than any other Esper.

He's the hardest to get since the hint is a bit abstract. In the top right corner of the map is a small island shaped like a triangle. Here you'll encounter an enemy called the Zone Eater who has a move that will "swallow" your party members. Let it do it, and you'll wind up in a special dungeon where Gogo resides. Gogo will join by simply talking to him/her/it. Just be careful, the room with the falling ceiling will actually kill you if it lands, so make sure to save before venturing into the dungeon.

Gogo will join by simply talking to him/her/it. Just be careful, the room with the falling ceiling will actually kill you if it lands, so make sure to save before venturing into the dungeon.
Theres also a save point halfway through, just incase you need it.
but... may just be me but i think Gogo aint that great. also. try using the switch in Figaro castle that moves it. if you havent already

I've only made it this far with all your help. Hopefully done enough on my own. Anyway after being pushed off and flattened a few times I got Gogo.
So I now have Phoenix and Ragnorok (the Esper not the sword). Thanks to Galuf's tip off I'm about to get Odin.
Where is Alexander? And why have I got a terrible feeling I'm gonna have to try and fight that thing atop the Cultist's Tower again?
Also does Doom Gaze just fly around randomly and invisibly waiting to hijack the airship?

Doom Gaze gives you Bahamut.
also i read that he has a set position on the map that gives the illusion that its random.
Magi master gives the amazing X-magic. just berserk him and cast life3/ re raise on anyone, and kick his ass

To find Alexander, take Cyan back to Doma and spend the night, you may wish to save before doing so. For extra oomph, bring Terra along, same when you go to Figaro to get Odin.

Yes Galuf is right with Doom Gaze. If hunting him make sure your levels don't end with a 5 or a 0 as he will always open with lvl 5.0 doom. Strago is great to use fighting him as he learns his more powerful blue magic from Doomgazes attacks. Also I like to get Oden before having a nap at Doma, as Oden/Raiden Espers come in very handy in Doma.

After a fruitless search, i looked it up online and went to Doma. The bit I remembered myself was what I was told at Thamasa. I needed walkthrough help for one bit of the ghost train, worked out the rest until......WrexSoul. What he said at the beginning of the battle...I dont like where this is going......do all my players have to be near KO before I can attack? Is there any way to do it using Terra Celes and Relm cos Ive got no reliable All attacks with these three. Or.....am I just stuck at this point forever?

Yeahhhh....Ive struggled with Sabin's Blitz attacks. I tried the most basic one with a diagonal arrow in (several times) and it doesnt work. Im definitely hitting both buttons....but nothing. Ive been coasting by on his attacks and Pummel (which does seem to get more powerful as he gains levels)

WrexSoul will posses on player at random. Beat up that player until he appears and beat him up. It's the long way to do it. I used to just summon Odin and it ends the battle too however you can miss out on his prize that way.
Pas for the monster in the box under Figaro it's a tough fight but drops the offering. Well worth the trouble of it all.

Double post... With Sabin's blitz attacks try just rolling your thumb on the d-pad. Another trick that people say works for playing with a keyboard is if the blitz AuraBolt is down, down left, then left. Try down, down, left. It may work.

No, the prize is actually a Pod Bracelet, which is not terribly worth the frustration of beating him since there are easier ways to obtain them. I forgot to mention he also possesses the third Memento Ring in the game, but it's hardly worth it since only Relm and Shadow can wear them. Alexander is one of the rewards for finishing off Wrexsoul and you'll find the magicite in the real world after you really wake up.
The only magicite you can lose out on by "cheating" to win are Fenrir and Bahamut, but even then it only pertains to using Break or X-Zone on them since that will delay their turn and skip the Magicite obtain cutscene.

Wolf is correct. You won't miss out on Alexander bye cheating out WrexSoul. Just a pod bracelet. Not sure if Gogo can equip the third momento ring or not, but I'm guessing you didn't bring Locke anyhow.

Yay! I get to be the 100th post in my own thread.
UPDATE: So I'm getting my best mages on learning the powerful magic I've gained. After finding a clue from Duncan's wife that didn't pan out, I looked it up online and found exactly where his cabin is. And....how was I ever supposed to work out that it was five trees in the shape of a cross. How?
Anyway, found it and got Bum Rush. I've been practising rolling my thumb around the controls and its worked with AuraBolt. Just have to roll it fully round to learn this one.
I'm training up to deal with Kefka. How strong do my second and third parties have to be? And if I send Mog in on his own with the Moogle Charm, won't that mean he would have to deal with boss monsters? On his own?

Bubba i wasnt joking. Im a dunce at all these different terms. why cant something just be called one thing? It makes it simpler. And if gamepad means controller then yes im using one.
Im experimenting with who my final battle party will be, Sabin is the only choice Ive set in stone (thanks to mastering Bum Rush which is awesome)
Im no longer completely disregarding Setzer. I can equip him with the relic that turns his Slot into GP Rain so in a pinch I can use him for something. Ive dusted him off and trained him up.
I have my 12 im sending in. Its everyone except Cyan and Strago
No backsies, not now.
Did someone mention something about a mustache fibre for Relm? Whats that?
Oh and I have been experimenting with Gau. He's not gonna be on Team Kefka this time i dont think, unless by sheer luck ive picked up one of his better rages
Ive managed to beat several Mantideas by now, if I got those on the Veldt will it pack a punch if Gau learns it as a rage?

The Fake Mustache is an item found in the cave where you get Gogo, it changes Relm's Sketch ability into the more useful Control skill.
Most of Gau's best Rages are stuf you should already have like Black Cat but some of them can also be found in Kefka's Tower itself. The Samurai enemies in the final dungeon give Gau access to General Leo's Shock skill.
You haven't even seen how OP Setzer can really get. Gil Toss is a great move but his Fixed Dice weapon makes him broken as hell since they will often do 3 to 9k damage all the time. The weapon is found in the final dungeon.

It may shock you to know this Kanno but I don't have the Black Cat rage. Meh, whatever I will just nosey around Gogo's cave again. I bet its in that box where those jerks kept pushing me off.
And I will look out for that cool weapon of Setzers. My party of 12 are all now level 40 and above. Just gotta make sure all my mages know Ultima, Cure 3 and Life 2 then I'm all set to go in.
My team Kefka is mostly likely gonna be: Relm, Terra, Shadow, Sabin. I may make a late substitution in Setzer if I find that weapon.

Midgar Mist's mind is one again officially in overload with this game. Having to worry about 12 characters and their equipment/espers...too much
I thought id get a break from this when i reached Kefka but....no
Thanks for your help guys, I got further this time and refreshed my memory on the story as well as learning a few more things.
I will leave it a while and start a new thread sometime......just one based solely on those final Kefka battles I think.
In the meantime I can discuss some stuff about the story and be more of an active participant in this forum...which is why i gave this game a second chance in the first place

She is naturally magical like Terra but....yeah....weird
The great thing ive found about this game is that you can tinker with that magic stat all you want....on most characters. I think in the end Terra's was the same if not higher than Relm's in my playthough.
Although....Im pretty sure Kanno said something about if you get that magic stat to 140 it resets to 0. I got nowhere near that...but that magic stat only has to be 50 to knock out 9999 with Ultima

Actually it is a Vivi/Quan deal. There's a villager that mentions that Relm isn't related to Strago by blood. He was likely a friend of Relm's mother.
Although....Im pretty sure Kanno said something about if you get that magic stat to 140 it resets to 0. I got nowhere near that...but that magic stat only has to be 50 to knock out 9999 with Ultima
Yeah it's magic glitch in the game. It has to be pretty insanely high to do it though. Technically, I think if the magic stat gets to something like 90, it's enough to make Level 1 elemental spells do max damage so it's really unnecessary to go that far.
dont she learn meteor aswell at like lvl 90 or something
That's Celes actually, her ultimate spell is Meteor while Terra's is Ultima.
