I decided to make a name for the character names, later I will probably add other terms as well. Depending on the name the source is either the official Japanese version of the game, the official Japanese game manual and other sources.

Japanese characters, Roumaji, Japanese name, Western name

Japanese characters: Names mostly written in katakana.
Roumaji: How those characters would be written and "sort of" pronounced in our language/s.
Japanese name: How the name in Japan is supposed to be even with our letters. Mostly taken from games or manuals.
Western name: Western translation and/or version.

How very very interesting of you..... :ffvising:

I may use the japanese versions to refer to these characters from now on. Either the highlighted ones or the ones that follow.

That would mean "Japanese name" and not the "Japanese characters" part. I hope you understand that.

You may need to explain this a little more. What I know is that Earisu is Aerith or Aeris (depending on your point of view). Twas a simple mistranslation of the japanese.

I can't wait for Kanno to get into the mix with this thread as well. You are both experts on this kind of stuff :-)

The first thing that I have written are the Japanese characters to write down the names in Japanese. Mostly Katakana are used because the names are made up, foreign names, et cetera. Then come the roumaji which pretty much only show how the characters, Katakana for example, would be written with our own letters and give an insight in the Japanese pronounciation that we can understand. Then comes the actual Japanese name with our letters that is meant when they write with their own letters (with means even in Japan "Earisu" is Aerith, "Kuraudo" is Cloud or to make it more easily understandable, even in Japan "Fainaru Fantaji" is Final Fantasy and then the Western one (I sticked to the English ones here). And Aerith's name was never a mistranslation of Japan.

What I meant was it was a simple mistranslation of the Japanese Language by an English speaking dude.

Wow, that was a really long, roundabout way of starting a new Aeris vs Aerith thread.

Kudos.

That is no Aeris VS Aerith thread. This is a collective of facts about all names mentioned and giving insight for better understanding, not just Aerith, and anyone else who does not like that collective has no place in here, which means no arguments necessary. It will also show in one way or the other why certain names are what they are or pronounced the way they are, like Tidus for example. If you want to know why I started this thread - that is not because of Aerith but because a person who has no idea of Japanese lately said Kefka is not Cefca in Japan "just because his Katakana are Kefuka" which is flat out not true. He is Cefca nonetheless. Really everything is to be taken into consideration but that was the latest thing that made me post it. Plus I wanted to make something like that for a long time already. Anything in this thread that is gonna derail that much will be reported by me, that's for sure, so no, no Aeris VS Aerith thread.

FFVIII-X will be added later.
