Going to have to go for the Red Mage, on account of their attire. The hat is just so cool!

Blue mages due to having the consistently most diverse pool of moves throughout the series. And the method of learning is interesting as usual. While this may be hit or miss, as some blue mages in the series can be very disappointing, when the blue mage is done well, it shines, often becoming the best job in the game (looking at FFTA and TA2 here).

As much as I like the Blue and Black Mages, I gotta give it to the White Mage. It's by far the most consistently and universally useful class around.

The white mage is a close second, with the cute robes with the red triangles and the hood.

What's a Green Mage?

Someone hasn't played one of the best games in the series

(Also, there's a picture right there!)

Green Mages use primarily Status Effect magic.

Anyway this thread is racist and I refuse to partake. :colbert:

Going off pure practicality, the white mage. It's been useful in every game it's featured in. The blue mage is way too variable to be of consistent use.

Don't have the right console. I played the original! And that game's original. And I guess that game's original too if you think about it.

The only Job I used all through FF3D. Absolutely awesome in every way possible.

Everything else Blue Mage.

Oh, I'm sorry, I can't hear you over all my Mighty Guard, White Wind, and Bad Breath :smug:

The versatility of Red Mages is also their strongest asset!
That's why they're so awesome!

They're useful, sure, but then I only have to point at Kimahri's blue magic overdrive and shake my head. Easily the worst incarnation of blue magic in Final Fantasy. The Gun Mage in FFX-2 isn't bad, but it has some bad casting times which the alchemist can overcome.

Having said that, the enemy skill materia is a pretty compelling case for best overall materia.

If you'd only play tactics advance, you'd change your mind soon enough :p

And Kimahri isn't even a proper blue Mage. He's a jack of all stats whose limit break happens to have enemy skills. Stat-wise, he's more like a red Mage - Jack of all trades, master of none :p

I have to agree with you about Kimahri, but it doesn't change a fact that using Blue Mage isn't my style.
I always prefer versatility over copycating... and also the jobs/classes over versatility...

The thing with blue magic is that a handful of spells are very good (white wind, mighty guard, when they don't have atrocious casting times), but the rest sort of gathers dust.

White magic tends to be useful throughout the game, gets regular upgrades, and most of their spells are useful. Black magic the same. Blue mages tend to play as esoteric red mages, with some good healing spells, variable elemental spells and the odd status effect spell. It all depends on the game, really. Some blue magic is better than others.

Strago is a great example of a great Blue Mage where you can really get some great versatility when you need it.

I generally like white mages best, but red mages (especially the viera ones) are awesome pants

So wait, does FFVI have TWO blue mages? 'cuz I met Gau and I thought he was the blue mage.

Why would a game give you two of the same class?

I don't like how white mages get holy in the late game turning them into huge damage dealers. You don't see black mages getting a super powerful heal move.

Nope. Gau is something else entirely. He learns battle styles, not spells, and he doesn't learn then by being hit by then, but by mingling with enemies. Plus, you can't control the magic he used. It's a unique job that I guess can be described as a more complex berserker. Strago is very much a traditional blue mage.

Gau is basically Final Fantasy's attempt to copy DQ's monster recruitment systems from DQV. Gau uses set abilities based on the monster and it's A.I. but he also gets any of their buffs like Auto-haste and such as well as their natural immunities and weaknesses.

In terms of the question, Blue Mage is easily my favorite to play but I also love Black Mages and appreciate Red Mages.

Colour wise I suppose I'd say blue

Skill wise I say White is the best one ever!

Blue is my favorite due to how unique and even esoteric their skill set is. Not to mention the mechanic of actually actively going out and trying to get all the spells is very satisfying. Some of those are very hard to get and its rewarding as hell when you finally are able to get it.

I think Green Magic is cool and would love to see how it evolves in the course of the series.

Black Mage!

I'd probably go with White Mages as the 'best' overall, as their kits have traditionally included reliable buffs, healing, and damage without the lower magical stats Red Mages tend to have, but Blue Mages are my favorite and who I voted for. :)
