So my doodling thread is kinda old and I don't really have the time to casually doodle anymore, I decided to follow Pumpkin's lead and make a new drawing thread, marking a new drawing period. Nowadays, if I want to draw, I have to sit down and focus for a longer period of time. Might as well try some new stuff, eh?

Still, I've pretty much given up on trying to draw anything besides characters, so I'm dedicating this thread to just that - artwork of characters from my writing.

So the first pic is very experimental for me. It's the first proper group shot that I've ever done (that little Crosswords fiasco doesn't count). It includes all the major characters from the first part in the Fool's Journey novel that I'm writing. When I get my phone back and can pretend my light is a lightbox, I might actually ink it and color. For now, here's the sketch:

So I've experimented a bit with some of the clothing - besides Griff (the one on the left in the central trio), all characters with visible clothing have new duds, so that was interesting. Adding a little braid to Ofelia's hair was kind of a challenge, but one that I think paid off. Also, I kinda wish I had bigger pieces of paper, because the detail on the characters in the back really needs some work.

Good once again Fynn! I love the style of sketches - it sort of gives images a raw, unprocessed look.

I'm not sure if I'm only noticing it now, but Freddie (the guy on the right, right?) looks rather much like you, only with a thicker beard.

That's Ian and that is so untrue! Why does everyone say that! XD The hair and eye colors are different, and I have smaller eyes, not to mentioned he is seriously overweight, while I'm only slightly overweight :p

Moving on, do you draw many male characters with beards, or was it just specific to that particular story?

I won't lie, I like to draw facial hair a lot. No particular reason. I just think it looks nice and fills up some empty space on the face. It also lets me not try too hard on the face outline, as that's a tricky part. So apart from being aesthetically pleasing to me, it kind of like a cheat.

So I'm super excited because I'll be a game master for a D&D campaign with our friends this summer! So I've devided to draw some of the important NPCs I have in mind! (People who have RP'd with me - you'll see some familiar faces, as I've recycled some of my characters I had in mind for this as my characters in the RPs :p)

So first up, we have Eld. A cute, sheltered little elf mage with a big destiny on his shoulders.

So here's a character familiar to Brave Vesperians! Nubrik's a brilliant but lazy cleric who finds the overall atmosphere of his order a bit stuffy. I expect him and Eld to develop a bromance of some sort.

Up next we have Gerda, a righteous paladin who finds the machinations of her order to be more and more at odds with her conscience. She gets an important haircut later, the face is a bit inconsistent between the two, but this is still just a rough sketch and I haven't nailed down her face yet. I wanted someone that looked determined and fierce, yet at the same time very pure.

Haha, yeah, I'm not gonna be the one to illustrate it. 1, I don't feel confident enough in my art and 2, when publishing the traditional route, you really don't get much say in regards to the cover, that's the job of marketing.

Well, he's the first companion my players will encounter and he pretty much jump-starts the plot. So he's a cute little plot device, essentially.

So we recently managed to start that D&D campaign and it was a great success! The character portraits I provided for both the player characters and the NPC companions really helped with the immersion, not to mention the players themselves being wonderful! We all had great fun and hope we can pick up where we left off soon!

Sorry these are photos, but I'm having trouble having my scanner work with my computer lately. This time around I used exclusively colored pencils, no markers or pens, and I'm pretty satisfied with the results!

NAME: Miah

Miah is a victim of circumstance. A daughter of a fisherman, she is accidentally present at the murder of a very important political figure, and since she had a bloody knife in her hand (she was gutting fish, btw), the blame was put on her. So she spent the next couple of years in the NEverwinter Woods where some elves took pity on her and taught her how to use a bow and arrow. She also has a wolf companion named Wolf.

An elf who is a close friend of Miah's. She grew up in a secluded village and was great at playing her Swarovski-studded lute, bute recently lost the ability to play it, so she goes on a journey to find out why. Oh, and find out where her mother went, too.

CLASS: Paladin
ALIGNMENT: Chaotic Good (see a pattern?)

A thick-skulled man with amnesia who was taken into a monastery despite believing in no god. Still, very skilled in combat, though he remembers nothing that happened before five years ago and has very limited grasp of traditional paladin abilities, he is the party's main tank that they really couldn't do without.



Now for the NPC companions. So a couple things first: (1) yes, I reuse a lot of assets, so if you've been following my art or my RP characters, you might see familiar faces, (2) there will be women later on. There are more male NPCs than female simply because they are all romanceable and two of my three players prefer men to women, so the math does itself. The girls will be introduced in the story when we next meet, though, so I should have some more portraits then!

CLASS: Wizard
ALIGNMENT: Lawful Good

One of Mystra's Chosen, needs to go on a Pilgrimage along the Sword Coast because of his gift. All his life he's been stuck in a tower as his caretakers prepared him for the journey. Now the time has come for the party to escort him where he needs to go. Incredibly naive and pretty-faced to the point that he gets mistaken for a girl on many occasions, prompting the party to give him the nickname "our elven maiden".

NAME: Byron
RACE: Tiefling (humans with demon features due to planar anomalies)
AGE: Unknown, looks to be in his early thirties
CLASS: Assassin
ALIGNMENT: Unknown (presumed to be Chaotic Evil, but who can really tell?)

The party encounters this jokey, lewd tiefling and killer-for-hire , when they lose their way and get trapped in a battle arena. He first joins them because he needs a party to participate in the battles get out, but it soon turns out he's actually a general of the Evil EmpireTM and kidnaps Eld (who later escapes, somehow). Gets called a Devil by many villagers because of his features, and as a result he craves any attention he can get. He also mentions how he's pretty much open to anyone sexually, because most people find him repulsive. The rest (usually people with some kind of demon man fetish) - he usually just takes what he can get.

NAME: Nubrik

ALIGNMENT: Chaotic Good

A member of Neverwinter's Lionsguard, Nubrik is a rebelious but skilled cleric who often gets in trouble with his monastery. This gets him and the party thrown in jail at one point as they get caught up in a conspiracy that they thankfully soon unravel and Nubrik leaves the monastery for good, offering the party his much needed healing and support skills.

The man that the party was told by their father figure person at the beginning to seek out in case something happened to him. He's a member of the mysterious Harpers and was sent to not only protect the party, but also guide them on the path that the Harpers intended for them. A friendly and amicable fellow, he is an excellent shot that you really shouldn't cross.

Adler's half-brother, a half-orc with a monstrous face disguising a gentle, artistic soul. He often sings and plays his lute, but that doesn't make him any less formidable in combat. He is, however, very timid, speaking very rarely and blushing often, especially around a certain someone he has a secret crush on. Luckily, his brother is there to do the talking for him.

Hey, the D&D party is meeting up today, so I drew portraits for two new characters! :D

First up is Gerda Leonheart. She's a lawful good human paladin, a member of the illustrious Order of the Radiant Heart under her father Freyr. She is torn internally as her strong sense of duty tells her she has to fulfil her orders, but she's frustrated that her dad is only giving her basic tasks.

And here we have Cynthia, a lawful good tiefling sorceress, who is actually Byron's sister, but unlike him, she is very much a morally upstanding citizen, devoting her life to helping those in need, but is also just as amicable and charismatic as him.

The colour pencils give your creations much more life! What brand are you using?

Derwent Artist 72. I picked them because they had a lot of colors and weren't too expensive, and people online said they were very decent for their price. They're easily the best pencils I've ever used.

They look very nice. Derwent are an excellent lead pencil but I've yet to try their colour pencils. Picked up Prismacolour pencils recently so hopefully they will do me in good stead.

So I'm working on a fanfic for SMT: Devil Summoner that's mostly its own thing since it takes place in New York so it's accessible to people completely unfamiliar to the source material, but also with lots of nods to the series. The story follows two detective brothers who have this agency that's a regular PI agency on the surface but they actually deal with demons and lots of supernatural cases.

Here's Jack Goldstein, the older brother who is the more charismatic and outgoing of the two, a free spirit, if you will. He's happy to use new technologies for Demon Summoning and stuff, and he's great at reading people.

Benny Goldstein is the younger - yet taller and bigger - brother. He's going through some personal drama at the start, and in general has been pretty unlucky throughout all his life. However, he's kind, calm, and dependable. Because of past trauma, he doesn't use a COMP or any other demon summoning device, but because of a certain... event in his childhood he has supernatural powers that allow him to transport him and his brother to the Dark Realm (a demonic version of NY). He can also become crazy strong and use magic while there.

Jasvinder "Jazz" Singh is an indie singer who is also the first client the Goldstein brothers get visited by in the story. Her close friend disappeared in mysterious circumstances and she wants Jack and Benny to find out what happened to him.

I feel your face shape on him is really spot on. Not that you're bad at it previously, but his really good. I think the angle maybe? He's slightly looking down or his head is. I dunno. I like it.

Your style has a definite anime influence, but with a cool sketchy and storybookesque quality, evocative of the Final Fantasy Tactics or IX style, but less cutesy. It's very visually appealing.

He actually chose that name for himself. A petty misanthrope who only trusts animals. He's devoted to his human posse, though.

Childhood friend of Griff, one of the main protagonists, she's an energetic girl with great knowledge, intelligence and wit. Her clairvoyance gives her tremendous natural empathy, as well as putting her in an important leadership position post-time skip.

Difference: Grows out her hair post-timeskip - she had a pixie cut before that!

Another childhood friend of Griff's and Alice's fiancé, Mike can be blunt, but he's devoted to his friends and surprisingly intuitive. A joker on the surface, he's actually stupidly reliable.

Difference: that modern quaff thing doesn't happen to his hair until the Time skip


DANIEL

Shifter (can change objects and his body parts into other materials and objects)

Daniel is a Thaumaturge, which basically means he's the source of all magic of his specialty. The oldest character in the group (even older than he physically appears), he serves as the Team Dad, voice of reason, and booster of morale. He's also crazy strong, built like a truck, and will mercilessly mow down anyone threatening his "family"

Difference: grows out an angry moustache!

So I've decided to do something a bit more challenging this time - full-body sketches of Jack and Benny! I never do this lately so of course the proportions are out of wack, for which I apologize. It was still super fun to do!

So here's Jack Goldstein with two low-level demons, Jack Frost and Pixie, who are prominent characters in the story (yes, I intentionally partnered up a character named Jack with Jack Frost). He's also holding a gun-shaped COMP that was used by summoned in the past (as in, other Devil Summoner games) though his demon summoning program of choice comes in the form of an iPhone app.

Next up is Benny Goldstein. Notice the lack of demons. He refuses to become a summoner because of past traumas involving demons. A result of those traumas are the tattoos on his forearm that give him demonic powers and the abilities to transport between the Dark Realm and normal world. He's also kind of bitter since he's undergoing a divorce and stuff.

Managed to squeeze in a little doodle in between serious adult stuff today!

This is Sergei, a character I haven't drawn in a while. He's basically the deuteragonist of my Path to Eden story that's currently on hiatus, though I'll probably redo it someday. He's an older Russian professor that gets chosen by a different alien faction than the protagonist in order to kind of disrupt stuff. He's one of my favorite characters out of the ones I've conceived - he's one of my eldest (pushing 70), he's gay, highly intelligent and very hard to read. His cunning nature kind of makes it hard to trust him for the first half of the story that I've conceived so far, but he's actually a very caring, passionate imdividual that nevertheless always tries to look at everything from a balanced perspective. Characters from the story are meant to represent specific aspects of humanity - Sergei represents Truth.

And yet Jack and Benny encounter him on numerous occasions both in the Human Realm and the Dark Realm. He seems very knowledgeable of the nature of both humans and demons, though for some reason he and Benny cannot get along at all. Slightly pretentious and a bit of a hedonist, there's much more to Lou than meets the eye.


... I'm sure you know EXACTLY who this is if you've ever played SMT :p I specifically changed the appearance, since that changes a lot throughout the series, but I'm not being remotely subtle about it, so if you can tell, enjoy this take :D

I can see why you like the design. I particularly like the first original drawing. I love the loose suspenders and the glasses which at first give him a formal taste, before the vest and tattoos kinda swing the pendulum back. There's a clash of fashion there, and even a clash of eyes with his heterochromia. There's a few interesting takes from it, to be honest.

Lou is Lucifer. He is an important character throughout the series who is far less unambiguously evil than you'd think. Of course, his characterization largely depends on what alignment you choose, but most of the time he's characterized as someone rebelling against the status quo who wishes to free humanity from its chains. He's the epitome of the Chaos alignment, so if you're Law-aligned, he won't be very friendly to you.

Honestly, one thing I've learned in the SMT games in IV is that if you go Neutral, both sides take offence at you, so you're kinda stuck between a rock and a hard place when you take a third option.

Basically, they switched it to make it a bit less obvious. But it's still not some random name - Hikaru has the same root kanji as Hikari, which means light. With Lucifer basically meaning "light-bearer", you can kinda see what they were going for.

That reminds me of the T.V show 'Lucifer' which is where the Devil himself grows bored being the Lord of Hell and abandons his kingdom to run a nightclub. Somehow he gets involved with the LAPD and assists a dectective in crime cases.

That kinda 'I want to be among the humans and live life' vibe reminded me of the show. I've never seen it, but I've heard about it and it seems interesting, if kinda wacky. 'The Devil fights crime!'

Well, he's still not really goody-goody, honestly. I can kind of see him seeing the potential in Jack and trying to get him on his side. But aside from that, his art is kind of how he tries to spread his godless might-makes-right philosophy. So he's dialing it back a bit, I guess.

Still, this is a fanfic to Devil Summoner, not mainline SMT, so I want to make it much less gloomy and more fun (since Devil Summoner/Persona is the timeline where the worst stuff doesn't happen and people live relatively normal lives), so it makes sense for Lou to be a bit more, laid back, I guess?

Aida's a newly employed assistant and Jack and Benny's office. Spunky and optimistic, Aida quickly accepts all the weird stuff happening around her when she starts working for the Goldsteins. She's happy to experience something new because she's still looking for her way in life.

It was fun drawing a full-body pic of a woman since I haven't done that in a while, and though the proportions are still a bit off (Lou is so far the pinnacle of my drawing proportions), I still think this is the best I've done!

Also, I notice that, with Aida's curves and Lou's muscles, my characters are becoming a bit more overtly sexy, and I'm not sure how I feel about that 0_o

Since this is pretty much right after Benny, you'll notice one thing - Benny and Jack don't really look similar. This is not any foreshadowing or anything, they're not secretly not brothers. There are two main reasons for this. 1) I wanted to showcase the differences to their personality through design quirks (including the fact that Benny looks older even though he's younger), and 2) Art imitating life. My brother and I don't look much alike aside from hair and eye color, as well as general build and face shape. I always found that super interesting, so I decided to implement it here. So both Jack and Benny have green eyes, wavy, chestnut hair, and big noses, and that's it, they're completely different looking otherwise, by design :p

Wanted to draw something more dynamic, so here's Jack brandishing a machete! (Also, a shotgun in the other hand but you can barely see it, sadly)

There's a reason for this, though! It's not like I just gave him a machete because it's cool. In SMT, in most cases your main character can only summon demons with their COMP, but they can't use magic. They can use two types of attacks though, sword and gun, because different demons are weak against different attack types, so they're equipped with both. Hence, shotgun and machete for Jack.

In the way older games, like SMT 1 or Soul Hackers, you also always get a heroine who can use magic. In this case, that's Benny - due to a mysterious event from his past, he's kind of in-between the regular world and the Dark Realm, so he has magic and other demon powers. That's why he doesn't use any weapon - he just powers his punches to punch demons into oblivion

EDIT: Actually, just counted - non-stop drawing for two weeks yesterday. Actually started even three days before that but there was one day without a drawing then. So far, then, it has been 14 consecutive days of drawing. Don't know if I'll manage to draw anything today since I'll be home late, but here's hoping for 15 and more!

This wasn't even intentional tbh. I didn't set out to draw a picture a day. It just happened!

Right, so today I've been feeling really under the weather and the drawings turned out pretty meh because of it, I think. They feel kinda half-assed and I couldn't get the pencil do do what I wanted it to do. But here are the things. It is what it is.

First: Jack is not a morning person. Find the cat.

Also, decided to practice the faces of the girls from the story that I've drawn so far.

First up, Celia, Benny's ex-wife, in a light pink sweater which you can't see because this is not colored

And Delilah. Not gonna lie, she's probably my favorite design of the girls because she looks so different. I like her slight dimples, nose, and jaw shape. I'm not even ashamed to say the main idea behind her design was "mature and sexy". I think I did a pretty good job with that!

What, you mean the plot twist isn't that they're all lizard people?

I do actually always have an animal motif in mind when designing a character! They're mostly mammals but I guess that's because mammals are easier to empathize with? Idk.

In any case, Jack is, of course, a cat. Benny, on the other hand, is actually a wolf in my mind. Aida is the bear, though that's more in temperament that outward design. Bailey is an owl whole Delilah is a crow, so not mammals, and neither is Jazz - her motif is a snake. Though I kinda had the more positive qualities of a snake in mind, if that makes sense? Think Riddel from Chrono Cross. Celia has a dog motif, while Lou has, of course, goats. Because, what else?

Had a humongous headache today so I only managed the three drawings you're about to see, but I'm at least glad that I got to the point that I can actuallly make a decent full body doodle in little time

Okay, actually got it to work!

Was super tired and headachy yesterday but I managed to draw some stuff!

First up is shaggy Jack. So I don't know why but I just really like this design so it stuck. I still don't know what happens to him, but I know something has to now at a certain point. So that's an interesting type of story planning.

(Also, Freya, in keeping with that conversation, while regular Jack is a cat, shaggy Jack is a lion)
