If you're a fan of sci-fi action shooters, nine times out of ten you'll end up having to control one of many (http://www.cracked.com/article_16196_the-7-commandments-all-video-games-should-obey_p5.html) grizzled space veterans (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ASpaceMarineIsYou). There's no escaping it - you'll have to guide your hero through all manner of aliens, monsters or both if you want to see the day through victorious. Up until the sequel, of course.

But out of the many (admittedly white) protagonists, which space marine has been your favourite? More generally, what do you think about the 'space marine' genre? Is it positive, or rather derivative?

Below are an array of space marines. Take your pick, or if you've got a really obscure one, feel free to choose the 'other' button.

Doomguy, from Doom

Master Chief, from Halo

Jake 'Nomad' Dunn, from Crysis

Commander Shepard, from Mass Effect

Marcus Fenix, from Gears of War

Isaac Clarke, from Dead Space

Captain Titus, from Warhammer

And presumably many other examples. Bonus points if you can get a space marine who isn't white male.

Clarke isn't a space marine, he's just a dude who kills trout in space.

Also, for further examples, Terrans in StarCraft are the space marineiest faction since Aliens, and also Sgt. Cortez in TimeSplitters Future Perfect is the best actual space marine ever. It's time to split!

Of the ones listed? I'm gonna have to go with the old classic, and say Doomguy. I'm sorry but you just can't get better than RIP AND TEAR! YOU ARE HUGE! THAT MEANS YOU HAVE HUGE GUTS!

I included Clarke because he fits pretty much every other 'space marine' trope. Besides being a marine. And I still can't help but thinking those helmets look like lego heads, Fynn.

Master Chief is also not a Space Marine. But I chose him anyways.

I was all prepared to vote Doomguy, but then I saw Commander Shepard and decided to be a cliche.
