Nice video. Now I'm once again sad it's not gonna be out until next year.

The talk about the sandsea reminded me that in the IZJS version the BGM for the Nam Yensa Sandsea was changed from the same drab sandsea theme you're probably sick of by that point of to the Cerobi Steppe theme. And that was like... wow. Just by changing up the music the entire area has a completely different feel to it, making the sandsea trek feel a lot less monotonous.

OMG Wolf Kanno sounds like somebody else I've listened to on YouTube. Who! Who! This is going to be bothering me all smurfing day now.

I was not expecting Wolf Canoe to sound like this.

Oh neat video too.

The funny thing is I'm the one here who people actually have confused for an Asian.

Good video guys! I'm actually looking forward to this game more now after watching this. I almost completed FFXII but didn't get around to it in the end. Like you both said, FFXII was so different from past entries that I didn't really feel the game appealed that much to me, but I've wanted to go back to it for a while and see if I can gain a new appreciation for it. I think the new job system might help because it will feel like everyone has more of a role to play in battle. Also interested in hearing some of the new music and hearing the cast again because I remember the voice acting being very good.

Seriously though I really enjoyed the Podcast. I'm not much of a podcast person but you guys kept it interesting, it flowed well, you worked well together, and it didn't overstay its welcome. You also covered a few things I was thinking. So good job guys!

I'm certain Canoe is cheating and not using his natural voice. Or he's doing some audio postprocessing!

Even after learning about the actual meaning on Uhlan (which i knew before listening to this podcast!), I still like to imagine some brainstorming session among the dev team and some guy says "ok so we need a name for this class that's using a lance, any ideas?", then another guy is like "Uh, lan..." and the first guy immediately interrupts him and shouts "GREAT let's go with that."

I wish. My wife just told me that compared to him I sound pre-pubescent in the video :roll2

Anyway, I think there were actually more of these little touches in the job names, wasn't there? Wasn't there one called the Momunofu or something?

Wolf Kanno totally did a different voice in the intro to this, I'm tellin' ya. Confused the hell out of me when he spoke to Fynn in a totally different voice.

My voice just naturally slips into that tone I use in the beginning. Mainly when I'm reading off stuff. I've been told I have the making for a very smooth villain voice.

Perfect accompaniment for my train journey to work this morning!

I still have my original copy of FFXII. Unfortunately, my purchase of it coincided with the death of my PS2 from a water infection. That being the case I've never experienced the game. I remember the reaction to it upon release though and I agree with everything you guys said. Including how some attitudes to the game seem to have changed over the years.

Having recently aquired a new PS2 the question I need to ask myself is... do I wait for the HD version or do I experience it sooner than that in all its retro glory?

Wolf Kanno
06-29-2016, 08:24 AM
Both the original and HD version will be different enough that I feel you can easily play both, it just comes down to whether you like the story or not. The original pretty much allowed you to build the party however you wanted to, whereas the HD version will have a job class system.

Psy aedited some of our stuff out for time, but we also mentioned some other interesting things:

there's a mode in the game that's even faster than turbo mode but they couldn't show it at E3 because in the Lhusu Mines they'd just keep bumping into walls
a map overlay function has been added, so now you can look at the whole map of the area as you run around
the sound quality of the voices has been vastly improved
okay, we didn't really talk about this, but I just remembered that this was mentioned during the E3 presentation, but the load times between the areas are much shorter now, taking virtually no time at all, so FFXII is now a tiny bit closer to being a full-on open world game

Just make sure you use an old TV if you don't want it to look like ass XD

It looks just as much like ass on old TVs. The assiness was just smaller and blurrier.

Bluriness was as close as we came to anti-aliasing back on the PS2 xD

If you want that, just play the game with someone elses glasses on

Fynn
06-30-2016, 03:55 PM
But that will give you a headache. FFXII on an old TV won't, no matter how bad you say it looks :p

it just doesn't look any worse on new TVs. You can make the game blurry there if you want to

Whenever I play the PS2, I just change the TV from widescreen to standard.

Hard to imagine the original game doesn't look better on a CRT than on a modern tv tbh

Mirage
07-09-2016, 04:26 PM
A huge part of the perceived difference in image quality is that the screen is bigger, so the same amount of pixels get stretched over a bigger area. A 50" CRT wouldn't have given you a sharper image.

Going from 32", which is reasonably big for a CRT, to 42" nearly doubles the area of the screen, making each rendered pixel twice as big as before.

People's standards for what is considered a big screen have changed. People's standards for what's considered a sharp image have changed. My PC screen is nearly as big as my parents TV (24" vs 27") when I grew up, and I'm sitting two feet away from it. I used to sit 7-10 feet from the TV when I was a kid, of course the image is gonna seem like it was sharper before even if it wasn't.

sinuosity
07-10-2016, 10:43 AM
Sharper no, but it would look better, wouldn't it? The LCD has to stretch and upscale, the CRT can do it 640*480 natively? Unless I misunderstand. Plus you get CRT pixel bleed which softens things

Mirage
07-10-2016, 03:02 PM
There is no "native" resolution on CRT monitors :p. Pixel bleed is due to the signal cables, not the monitor, and you don't get that if you connect your PS2 with proper RGB component cables.

sinuosity
07-11-2016, 01:39 PM
Yes, but then any sub-HD resolution image on a HD CRT won't suffer from the same distortion as on a LCD HD screen, right? As the CRT has no native resolution.

What the hell dude, I was sure pixel bleed was inherent to CRTs. Why do all those CRT filters use that effect if that isn't the case?? Is this all just lies?

I'm so glad they're remaking FF 12! But with all the remakes coming out, I realised that this game is probably someone's childhood. And that makes me even happier. Final Fantasy has one of the strongest legacies in gaming history.

Ngl this is absolutely devastating

And I’m pretty sure the copyright strike was issued by a certain individual who wasn’t acting in good faith. Anyone can issue a copyright strike and YouTube usually doesn’t bother to check since there’s so many small channels. And I know at least one person with a grudge

We hadn't posted anything on it for four years and EoFF has dropped off most people's radars so I'd be really surprised if that's true. I think more likely the endless FF OSTs we uploaded got picked up by new crawlers and all got flagged.

It's a shame, but it's our fault. My strategy at the time was to upload (or rather, ask Shauna to upload :D) as many OSTs as possible to lure people into the channel and rack up easy views for very little work. You can't really call that Fair Use, so it's a fair cop.

The high speed option makes it easy to over level and cheese through everything too if you're looking to go through story fast.

Del Murder

My main gripe with FFXII was that it took a while to crawl through some of the zones as the encounters were tough to avoid. My overall impression (from 15 years ago mind you) was that it was a fun game but things unfolded slowly. I hope these high speed options help!
