Once upon a time, in a land far, far away there lay a forest. It was enchanted, dark, and deep. Many secrets were hidden there. But nothing was more desired than the greatest treasure that it kept safe - The Golden Pen.

The Golden Pen was said to make anything written in it's enchanted ink become the BEST THING EVER. It was of course, the most desired object in the world by many writers - and on this evening long ago eight budding young stars wished to take it for themselves...

First came Formalhaut, the poetic bard. He stepped carefully through the forest avoiding making too much noise. He was quiet and fast and soon he approached The Golden Pen. It was within his sights but suddenly he stopped. He looked to his left to see that the tree he was beside had a face - and that it as about to speak;

"Your poetry is fine
But it's far from sublime
You can't even write up a decent rhyme
and your sentences don't match up in time!"

The wicked tree sang, each word that fell from the knotted bark crushed Formalhaut's spirit that little bit more. He couldn't take this mean critic anymore and he fled from the forest, leaving The Golden Pen on it's plinth for the next writer to try to pass....

This time, came Fynn the novelist. He was dressed in fine garbs with hair as quaffed as that of a Prince. He strode through the forest atop his white steed; wondering if there might even be a Damsel in Distress he could save once he had snatched up the pen. Before he had a chance to make it to the magical plinth, he heard the nearby screams of a damsel in a dangerous situation, and off he galloped to save her - perhaps she would fall in love with him too! As he drew near, he saw that the damsel was in fact an ugly hag - and she pointed at him and yelled in his face; "CLICHE!". Fynn became so shocked that he fell from his horse and skedaddled at high speed back home.

The next contender was a news reported, Freya! She carried her pen and paper with her as she chose a clear path through the forest. She took in the beautiful settings and scribbled down notes about it - pretty soon she had lost her way and had almost forgotten about The Golden Pen until she saw it in the distance - glowing at her. She took another step forward but nearly jumped out of her skin as a 'POOF' of smoke appeared! Behind it was none other than Rupert Murdoch! "My, Freya! I love your news skills! I want to offer you a job at my TABLOID!". Freya screamed and ran in the opposite direction.

Next up came the beautiful Midgar Mist - the post-modern poet. Now, this lady was not about to let that Golden Pen slip from her grasp. She bolted through the forest, not letting up as she raced forward as if her life depended on it. But of course, her very life DID depend on it - she HAD to get that pen or she would be the worst writer ever for life. But maybe she already was? What good would a stupid pen be when she was already so useless at forming sentences and writing metaphors.... Her crushing SELF-DOUBT caused her to lose sigh of The Golden Pen, and she instead left the forest in floods of tears.

Then came Myst Knight - the next competitor looking to get their hands over The Golden Pen and rule the world with the riches to be made from being the Best Writer Ever! They kept thinking about their future so much so that eventually night had turned to day and they had lost all sight of what they were after - it was the PROCRASTINATION! Rats!

Today was the turn of jack-of-all-trades Night Fury! She ran quickly through the green forest filled with green trees. She hop-stepped over the roots peeking up from the dirty ground. She breathed breathingly from her own lungs in her chest before the brain of grey matter in her skull realised and thought aloud and also inwardly that she was suffering sickly from redundant REDUNDANCY! ARRRGH!

The journey was almost through, there were only two heroes left! The next was bl0gger Pumpkin! She like, totally skipped through the forest as best she could, keeping up a gr8 pace to get her hands on that Golden Pen. She clacked the keys of her keyboard - updating her Twitter followers that she was almost there; "Nrly at the G0lden P3n lyk ya" she typed. She head a loud 'GONG' sound and then a booming voice shouted at her

"YOUR GRAMMAR AND SPELLING ARE AWFUL!"

All she could muster up to say was; "Eh, it's all the internets fault!"

Finally came Wolf Kanno - and unlike the previous heroes he actually came to The Golden Pen. He lay his fingers against it and held it in his hand. He had succeeded where others hadn't - where they couldn't! He cheered triumphantly until he realised that the Plinth had morphed into a large block. As he stared upon it's smooth surface he lost his mind and couldn't figure out what to do.... He had been stumped by a WRITER'S BLOCK!!!



A truly cautionary tale, of all our heroes, none could succeed and become the BEST WRITER EVER. So now it's up to you to decide who should receive the accolade!

Over the years, EOFF has come up some truly wondrous creations. It's easy to forget the sheer quality of some of the previous winners. Some of them have shaped the very society that we live in today. I have compiled a list of the top five creations EoFFers have made not just to the forum, but to life as we know it.

- Psychotic's Pubic Wig - An early winner. Psychotic was reported to have ran down the street naked wearing only this and singing Merkin Nine till Five by Dolly Parton.
- Pike - A robot created by the EoFF community. Shrouded in mystery.
- Loony BoB's Spreadsheet Consolidation Spreadsheet - "Are you drowning in spreadsheets? Why not consolidate all your spreadsheets into one easy-to-use spreadsheet?" The tagline for this famous creation.
- Jinx's Wine Dispensing Helmet - Capable of holding six bottles of wine. This enables her to play Heavensward unhindered whilst still providing her with her daily alcohol allowance.
- Skyblade and Vivi22's Ring of Death - Designed primarily with these two members in mind. Whenever a debate cannot be solved with intelligent discussion, the two parties duke it out until one of them is victorious.

Will any of this year's creations be able to challenge the top five? Only time will tell!

I always like doing the creative speeches, because I think it's something that goes a bit under-appreciated in society. We all know the stereotype of the starving artist, or the art major, while we say things like get a real job or pick something more useful. Even those of us who are supportive, or maybe want to pursue a more creative career such as writer or artist, we know it's hard. It doesn't just take talent and hard work, it takes luck, timing, and the right audience. There are so many creative writers, painters, sculptors out there who will sadly never make a mark on the world.

But I think maybe we limit our view of creativity. We think painters, drawers, writers, musicians. Maybe we broaden it a bit and include the cake decorators, hair stylists, dog stylists, interior designers, and the like. I think we forget that creativity encompasses so much more. It's the people who look at things from a different angle, who ask new questions, who view the world a little bit differently. And it's thanks to these people that we have many of the necessities we have in life today. These people have found the cures for diseases, the solutions to social problems, the technology we take for granted. They're the people who've asked new questions, explored new options, and tried new things.

I believe we all have creativity inside of us. Maybe we can't draw the perfect picture or write the perfect poem, but we can contribute to the world in our own unique way. Use it. Use the little differences you have, whether you're a writer or a chemist. And while we're at it, let's not forget that the “typical” artists we often overlook have contributed to society in many meaningful ways. Cave paintings that help us learn where we came from, musical pieces and fairytales that help tell us where we've been. Let's show some appreciation for the artist in all of us. And, of course, the nominees.

I don't really go in to chat very much anymore. I pop in from time to time and it's usually not active when I go. I don't know if I just show up during the lulls, or if chat just isn't as active anymore. Either way, I do feel kind of sad.

A few years ago, I was one of the most active people in chat. It really helped me feel more welcome on this forum and it helped me form bonds with many of the members here. I hardly ever talk to some of those members now, and it makes me miss those times a little bit. I felt so welcome in there, I felt like I had a place I belonged to. Sharky and I really got to know each other through late nights in chat, and my life has changed for the better because of it.

Not just for me, but for everyone, I do hope that chat still provides the great community and welcoming atmosphere it once did. I hope others find friends and a place to belong through that chat button on the top of the forum. And I thank all of the best chatter nominees for helping make chat what it is.

I have written this speech several times over my years here at Eyes on Final Fantasy. I've never really been sure why I always gun for this speech before others - but I think it's because I must love newbies or something.

I often start off with a quip about how I was once a Best Newbie winner and how that makes me such a figure of authority on the matter - I can't do that anymore (even though I kind of have), because I'm now up for Best Veteran. I've hit the rank of Veteran at Eyes on Final Fantasy. As a member, I've never felt more detached from our newer members, and I find that sad.

I say that I'm an older member with a pinch of salt, as some of the really old grandpas of this site probably still think of me as a puppy (or mischeivous, evil kitten?) But my point still stands. I'm older now, and as an older member I do regret to say that instead of interacting with our new members, I often just watch and observe and assume that they will leave after a couple of weeks - and let's be honest, many do!

But then we do seem to be able to hold on to a few who stick around to be the newbies of today and the oldbies of tomorrow. Tomorrow they will look over at the new crowd and let them have their moment too.

I think as members we can all do better to accommodate our newbies into our cliques and circles. To drag them into this dysfunctional family we have here, so they have no choice but to stay and then one day become the harassers of the next generation of newbies just in time for the next Ciddies. Ahhhhhh the circle of life.

So, to the winner - I say this - congratulations! Wear your sparkling crown with pride and be happy that you are 'The Chosen One'! You're the Gnarliest Newbie around, and you've won us over with your charm, hilarity, and enthusiasm. However, be prepared to hand that crown over and climb up to join us Veterans on the shelf. But don't worry, we have cookies, gin, and sarcasm. You'll be fine. This is just the start for you!

For those of you who didn't win, don't be disheartened. It's a cheesy cliche but you are all winners. You've made it this far - you didn't quit, you didn't stop coming here! Let me be the one to give you a hand up onto our shelf. So you're not the Gnarliest Newbie today, that sucks. But tomorrow, you could be the Most Tubular Member. Keep your chin up pupster, tomorrow is a new day so keep shining, keep up that spirit, keep up that charm. We see you.

We all know the joke, don't we? "The staff are nasty Shinra!" It's repeated often and over again. It's one of EoFF's many inside jokes, alongside such classics like "soup is a drink" and "ever think of the jerkhole?"

Honestly, it's a tiresome, insulting joke. The staff work really hard for the betterment of all EoFF. From the highest Administrators, to the Editors, Social Media Managers, Tech Admins, Chat Operators and Cid Knights, every person in a staffing role is fair-minded, friendly and most importantly, definitely absolutely positively NOT evil or corrupt.

Allow me to go on at length about each and every member nominated for 'Gnarliest Staffer' and how pure of heart each of them are. Starti-

... nope. No. I can't do it. I can't go on like this, keeping up this charade. I must reveal the truth to all the EoFF members, who have been lied to all these years. Wake up, sheeple! What you thought was just a simple joke is actually cold, hard fact. The EoFF staff actually are Shinra! They hired me to continue falsifying reports and produce good publicity for them, but before they ban me and erase all memory of my existence, the word must be known!

The entire organisation is involved. Every member that has been nominated for 'Gnarliest Staffer' is involved with the corrupt organisation. I've been working with a deep cover journalist, who has managed to smuggle in some shocking secrets about EoFF staffing practice.

Let's start with Bubba. This man only recently joined Shinra, but he's quickly shot up the ranks due to a few unscrupulous fixing events. Did you know he had a child just to secure a 'Cutest Couple' Ciddie? There are no words to describe the lengths this man would go to. Who knows where that child is now? Is the child becoming indoctrinated at an early age to serve Shinra's purposes? Or something far worse? Unfortunately my colleague has been unable to enter Shinra's kindergarten on floor 53 of the Shinra building. He gets to floor 24 via the stairs but gets way out of breath and has to stop. I did ask him to use the elevator, but he says it malfunctions frequently.

Then there's Depression Moon. This man is an editor, which in Shinra-speak means 'Propaganda Extraordinaire'.

There are rumours that Depression Moon is in league with game developers and E3 to dupe us into being hyped for the remake of Final Fantasy VII. They lure us in with enticing gameplay tasters and trailers, but what they do not reveal is that Final Fantasy VII is actually a freemium mobile game. With a daily play limit.

Freya doesn't appear the type to engage in such violent acts. Look at her profile? A Kawaii dragon? Adorable! A cute little fork icon? Daawww. But that silk hides some serious, blood-soaked steel. Freya isn't called 'Master of the Fork' for her badass culinary skills. She uses that fork for more... painful activity. With a name like Psychotic, you'd think this guy would be more suited to instruments of death and torture. Actually, this guy is above such actions. Psychotic is actually one of the highest executives in Shinra. He controls so much - there's possibly some powers we don't even know about. One clue about his reach is within his own location. "...to wipe away the debt", like some kind of anti-Lannister. Suspicious. And we don't know how EoFF is even funded, leading to more suspicion that it EoFF is just a Shinra front!

Pumpkin's different, however. From what little we know of her, she appears rather normal, at least compared to the soulless corporate demons of the other staff members. But every staff member has done or is something reprehensible, and Pumpkin has a guilty secret that could topple the organisation...

... she's CANADIAN.

This would surely damage the reputation of Shinra, yup, I'm sure. If we keep spreading the word, we can dismantle the nasty Shinra, one staff member at a time! The people will raise up in anger!

But stopping them will be difficult when Shinra employs tough-as-nails enforcers of their unfair laws. Sephex and Shauna are two of Shinra's top Cid's Knights, no doubt chosen due to their steely glares and alliterative names. It is their role to crush any hint of rebellion or dissent. They are truly to be feared.

It's finally that time, the time for the final Ciddie. The cherry on top of our Ciddie sundae. Has it been a good one? I sure hope so, Award Dude and his helpers have been working hard. I don't know yet though because I'm from the past oOoOoOoOooooOoO!!!!!!!!!!

But I digress. We have some excellent members in the running for this award, as usual. I won't be talking to you about them, however. No, I'm going to let them do the talking. Each nominee was assigned another nominee to write something nice about. After all, EoFF isn't just about the individual. It's about a whole community of people working together to make this place what it is. What better way to celebrate that then to have our best member nominees talk about why their competitors deserve this title. The Ciddies is a time for all of our members to celebrate each other.

So a huge thank you to everyone who helped with this speech, and all of the speeches, and to everyone who makes this forum what it is. Whether you won a Ciddie or not, we appreciate you.

Without further ado, here are your nominees!


Freya is part of the furniture here on EOFF... and what lovely furniture she is! She is an amazingly positive person with her posts around the forum. She's an incredibly hard-working and talented editor producing some fantastic articles. Her artistic side is fabulous too, my particular favourites being her comedy sandworms from Dune! She is also pretty as a picture and EOFF would be a much more drab and empty place without her presence. Freya for Best member!



Wolf Kanno is an awesome guy. He's not always the most active on the upper forums, he doesn't participate in all of the events, and he isn't usually the center of attention. But he still does so much for this forum. He keeps the lower forums active with a number of interesting topics. He writes articles for us, including a lot of news for upcoming games and the like. Most importantly though, he's just a good person.

He's easy to talk to and get along with. Even if we have very different opinions on things, games mostly, we can still discuss and converse in a respectful manner. And it's just fun talking to him about this stuff. He doesn't take it too seriously, he's open to different ideas and points of view, and he'll joke around in a way that makes him very approachable and easy to get along with.

He's not just a good guy and a top tier forum member. He's also a talented writer who generously offers his own time to help out his fellow aspiring authors. I think Wolf Kanno is one of the best friends I have on this forum and I hope he thinks of me as a friend too.



They say to keep your friends close, and your enemies closer. Psychotic is my second in command at EoFF and was best man at my wedding. Enough said.




Karifean is honestly one of the best people I know. He's always super composed and respectful, no matter how much he may disagree with you. He has strong views but is not stubborn, and has a great sense of humor. Needless to say, he's an amazing conversation partner and I've learned a lot about visual novels thanks to him.

On a more personal level, I am really grateful for his patience and willingness to put up with the need for attention of a complete stranger. We actually started interacting when I asked him if he'd like to take a look at my stories. Since then, he's offered me very constructive feedback on every single one of them, expressing genuine interest in what is the effect of my life's passion. Knowing I have at least one faithful reader out there, who really reads my stories and likes them despite having very little to do with me beforehand, was a huge drive and inspiration for me. It's in large part thanks to Karifean that I could evolve so much as a writer. And I am incredibly grateful for that.

Because of that, I really think Karifean deserves to be this years Most Tubular Member.




Fynn is a swell guy. I'm very glad he asked me - probably just on a whim - to give his writing blog a try, because he's a very skilled writer and reading all those short stories was a joy. He's also the kind of person who, even if your tastes couldn't be further apart, will still have constructive arguments with you over how and why a certain narrative is subjectively good or bad and accept you having a differing opinion without looking down on you in the slightest. Which is really awesome.

Many thanks for the many great and interesting conversations we've had over the past year and a half, and best of luck for Most Tubular Member! You really deserve to win it.

I have tried to come up with just one word to describe Pumpkin. A tricky task but I think I've done it. Caring. It doesn't sound all that impressive on the surface of things but let me explain. I think we all often undervalue what EoFF is as a community. It's easy to forget that there are dozens of people from all around the world who are interested in what you have to say, care about you when you are down and are happy for your successes.

So how does this tie into Pumpkin? Because it is my sincere and honest opinion that nobody on this website cares more than she does. Her heart is gargantuan. It is the Hodor of hearts. Take Jecht's advice and cut open a Shoopuf but its heart will still be smaller. It doesn't matter if you're having a good day, a bad day or just a day. She is interested and she cares. So yeah, sure, if I say "caring" is my Pumpkin word it doesn't sound all that impressive on the surface. But when she embodies the best thing about this community, what higher praise can I give to someone?




Loony BoB has been the butt of many jokes over the years on this site: from his incessant need for stats, his dislike of name changes because he gets confused, and the fact he's from New Zealand. Yet, he always takes them in stride and chuckles with the rest of us. He has always been the friendly guy who just wants everyone to get along and have a good time, even in the midst of a heated argument. Even when he disagrees, he will always try to meet you on some middle ground, which is more than I can say for the majority of us. He's also the only member I can think of who has never really said anything bad about another member, and hell, he's never said anything really bad about a game either. Even when he complains about something, he'll usually be his own contrarian in the matter. He can be blunt sometimes, other times he's a bit stuffy about the "old ways", and his values don't always mesh well with others; but he's never been the type to say his rules are final or to try to force an issue when its proven not to pan out.

I can think of no other member on this site, who is more understanding, more compassionate, and willing to help out a fellow member of the forum, regardless of whether they are some newbies still trying to figure out the ropes, some oldbie who wandered back in because BoB summoned him from the ether with an email, or even the "problem" members. BoB to me would be the Best Member because he lives (mostly, you could be more active ;) ) the way we wish all people on this forum would, by being just a nice guy who doesn't take all of this so seriously. It was always a pleasure working with him, debating with him in the forums, and watching him laugh off a joke you made at his expense; I am honored to have met such a person through this site he loves so much, and be able to say he's my friend.

BoB, easily deserves this award, which is why I voted Psychotic instead.





Bubba is one of the most amusing and happy members of our little community. He likes to leave little presents around for members to step in when he's not around, so watch out for those by the way. Did you know he also loves sparkling vampires? He won't tell anyone this, but I know... and now you all know. He'd rather dream of being swept away by one than actually moderate EoFF.

Okay, that's pushing it a bit far but I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't the truth. I'm not spreading rumors or anything, I'm just saying. Is that the kind of person you want as your best member? Probably. It fits in with the rest of you people.

Bubba also is one of the first to offer his ear if you need to vent or need advice. Sometimes he's heavily intoxicated when you're doing this but that makes the interaction even better. Okay, I'm not sure if he's intoxicated ever but I'm not saying he isn't and isn't that the important thing to take away from this?
