Make your own FF mage. Pick a color and what kind of magic it does. Imagine a Purple Mage! A Yellow Mage! A Turquoise Mage! A Chartreuse Mage! An Off-White Mage?

The possibilities are nearly endless!!

Pink Mage!

Basically a Red Mage, but can only use White Magic and debuffs, no Black Magic.

Brown Mage. Uses buffs & debuffs. Wields large weapons like axes, hammers, clubs, etc. Kind of like a magical breaker who has spells that can benefit his/herself.

Grey Mage!

Uses both weakened white and black magic and carries an enchanted axe which she can use to butcher people to death with.

Wouldn't heavy use of the axe turn your grey mage into a red mage?

I've made my custom classes before. http://home.eyesonff.com/entry.php/6168-Final-Fantasy-New-Order-(fan-made)

However I would like to point out some old classes before I suggest my "Silver Mage"...

White Mage

These are known mostly for curing HP. It can also bring characters back from KO. Other traits such as protective and enhancement are often used. This job usually has ways to remove status alignments with Esuna, and Dispel. Their signature spell, Holy, can cause massive damage to a single target.

Black Mage

Elemental spells like Fire, Blizzard, Thunder and Water appear a lot. It is known to have several status effective magic like Poison and slow. They are great at attacking all enemies for quite some damage. They usually have the heavy hitting spells like Flare, and Meteor.

Red Mage

While they aren't the best of anything, they can be semi good at everything. They have a semi good attack, some black magic, and some white magic. While most people see this class as a blessing it's end game systems often make this class weak since they can't be better then a high level warrior, black mage, white mage.

Blue Mage

Often the high hitters of mages. They learn powerful magic from enemies. Sometimes they get really good abilities like White Wind, Mighty Guard, and even the awesome Supernova. If used right the blue mages can become the strongest jobs in the game.

Green Mage

The buff and de-buff of magic jobs. They have spells like Protect, Shell, Bravery but also have spells like Blind, Silence and Sleep.

Time Mage

Haste and Slow? Yes please. This magic user has spells that involve space and time. Stop and Gravity make this character powerful.

Summoner

Call upon magic beasts to do you bidding. Ifrit and Shiva can be easy heavy hitters in the beginning of the game. While Summons such as Odin and Bahamut are great late game summons.

If I was to make my own mage. I would have to look at what Final Fantasy has so far. It has healing, Buffing, Damaging, De-buffing, Summoning, and Other multi purpose mages.

I think I would make a mage that could nullify damage from attacks/spells or immune to negative status effects. Like Freeze HP, 0MP, and Nullify Attacks, Magic, Specials, Null Elemental, Null-KO. It would be my Silver Mage.

Silver Mage

Ruin - Low "physical" based damage
Immortality - Stops HP from depleting
Mastermind - Stops MP from depleting
Null-Magic - Magic no longer effects players.
Null-Physical - Attacks no longer damage players.
Status Guard - Immune to status effects.
Ruinra - Mid "physical" base damage
Null-Specials - enemies special attack no longer damage players.
Power-Boost - Stops positive spells from fading.
Null-KO - When you hit 0 HP you get full health
Quick - Players ATB is always full.
Ruinga - High "physical" base damage
No Thievery - prevents enemies from stealing from you.
Retrieve - throw and coin can be used without losing your stuff.
Stuck-Ill - Enemies can not recover from their status effects.
Victory Fanfare - gain the rewards but the enemies do not die. (flee with benefits)
Fixed damage - Allows players to hit for max damage.
Force - Max "physical" based damage (single).
Energy - Max "physical" based damage (all)

Edited my above post to look more clean and gave it more detail. I forgot to put in Osmose, but it should learn it after Doom.

I think a job like this would be neat in FF. Ah, I forgot Zombie and Stone too.

Basically a Dark Sage is fragile defensively, uses a lot of resources, but is powerful for crippling enemies.

There are some neato ideas in this thread! I'd love to see more types of mages in FF. (GO MAGES)

Space mage.

Does space stuff! We have a time mage already. Time & Space work together right? This person could like... teleport things. Like teleport a volcano on top of the enemy. Yeah. And then suplex it. Wait, what?
