It's not a movie, it's a series of shorts. Basically, like Origins, a handful of mostly standalone episodes that run through the entire series.

Why can't the anime be like this? I watched a few episodes of it on Netflix to see if I would still enjoy it as an adult, but man I must've been on that stuff as a child.

That part with the Magnemite hacking the door was cool.

Disappointed these are so short. I expected them to be episode-length like Origins. But I guess this is cool too.

DM, read the Pokemon Special manga if you're looking for something like this and haven't read it already. It's actually very similar in its tone and execution, WAY better than the anime.

These don't feel like stories, these feel like trailers. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be getting out of them. They definitely come across as hype for something bigger. Does the something bigger exist?

Nothing that's been announced.

I'd say they're more like these vignettes, or basically what flash fiction would be if it were filmed instead of written, and not exacly a trailer because there is build-up and resolution, which trailers shouldn't have. The Giovanni plotline will probably continue in the next episode or later because Team Rocket was also the main antagonist in gen 2.

So, on Origins and Generations, here's some speculation:
With the decline of the Pokémon anime's viewership in Japan among the primary demographic (as children are primarily watchingYo-Kai Watch), the anime has undergone a massive shift in direction. The attempts at more serious stories with character development that we saw in Kalos have been completely abandoned (with many believing that is why the writers from the BW arc were called back, and why Ash lost, something so negatively received even in Japan that the writers apparently apologized for it on Twitter). This is most clear with the new art style, which has undergone an astounding shift (and entirely for the worse, in my opinion).

At the same time, the older fans outside the target demographic overall responded very well to the Kalos arc (until the end), and Origins as well. Currently, Generations is scheduled for one episode a week until the end of the year.

The current speculation is that Generations is a test run to see how this style will work and be received. If it does well, it's expected to be the precursor to a second anime that will run concurrently with the one starring Ash, aimed towards the older and more serious fans.

Please keep in mind that this is mostly speculation, with no official word on the subject.

EDIT: Also, apparently Generations is a Western release only. Which is very unusual for the series, which has typically focused on Japan first.

But, here's Episode 3:

My Prediction: We're about to move out of Kanto. I think we'll have the burning of Tin Tower and Ho-oh resurrecting the legendary beasts at one point.

It's really weird that it's English first because the dialog is terrible

Agreed.

Honestly, I'd watch the hell out of a show that was based on the games in a similar way to the Pokemon Special manga. Heck, I'd be happy if they just gave us an anime version of Pokemon Special. That would be awesome.

Really? I liked it. Maybe not the creepiest that Pokémon has ever been, but it was still some nice Halloween ridiculousness.

It was just trying way too hard and tried to throw in every horror movie cliche without really understanding what makes them work

Would be goofy fun if it didn't make me cringe all the time
