Its here.... the one I never wanted to do... tidus.

tie dus...

Elly

the right way... the way it's pronounced in the FFX game trailer on The Spirits Within DVD, and how JAT and the rest of the staff that worked on the game pronounce it... definitely not like the American comedian Christopher Titus, but rather like the Okinawan word Tida which means Sun which perfectly mirrors Yuna which means Night... this ideology behind their names is reflected in their sun and moon sigils/crests...

Te-i-chouon to lengthen the "i"-da
Tiida

"Teeda"

Tidus

"Teed(uh)s"

Fun fact: I like "Taiduhs" more. But for the question "how is it pronounced" in terms of overall and not "how do people personally pronounce it" see the above. I also used to see Taiduhs but not anymore.

Also at thread title: Pornounce? Freudian slip?

Tidus as you would say it in German. I guess the closest I can describe it is Tee-doose with a short oo sound.

Got your back, man.

I think most people agree that it is supposed to be Tee-dus.

I think that sounds stupid so I always say Tie-dus and I will never stop saying it like that.

I know it's suppose to be TEE and I keep trying to get it right, but I always slip up and say TIEdus.

It's Teedus.

Tie-us.

Skyblade

I pronounce it "Sky-blade".

If they wanted us to pronounce it a certain way, they shouldn't have given us the ability to change it to whatever name we want.

I like that the pronunciation "Tie-dus" mirrors the pronunciation of a more common name Titus, but it's definitely Tee-dus.

This isn't something you can debate. His name is said in numerous videos and games. That's like someone intentionally mispronouncing your name and them then saying, "Oh, well I say it this way."

Tie-dus

It fits in better with his TIDE theme. WITH HIS WATER SWORD AND HIS WATER SPORT AND HIS STANDING IN THE DANG WATER ON THE FRIGGIN COVER

TIDE

TIDE-US

There's no high teed.

Fynn

But, as has already been said, TIDA (as in TEE-DA), his Japanese name is the Okinawan term for Sun. Just like Yuna means moon!

Heck, if ya\ll are gonna mispronounce it, might as well go ahead and pronounce Yuna "yuh-nah" since th meaning of that thing is lost anyway

Elly
10-11-2016, 11:37 PM
indeed, if people insist on pronouncing it with a long I, might as well pronounce Rikku, Khimari, Selphie, Tiffa, & Yuffi with a long I too...

Galuf
10-12-2016, 12:21 AM
I might just do that.

see how it goes.

but really. How someone pronounces something in a game isnt really bad. I guess its bad if the insist its the correct version. (I use tie but know its tee. I just dont like its sound. Whereas yuffie selphie tifa khimari etc. All sound better with ee)

Elly

lol, i was just being facetious, of course how people pronounce it is up to them and their particular tastes as long as they don't claim it's canon or official... i myself always say Aeris instead of Aerith even though i know the latter is canon... simply because i don't like how the official sounds and had been saying it "Aeris" since FF VII first hit the U.S. shores...
i honestly can see the confusion of Tidus' name when water is so prevalent throughout this game, if one had not seen the pre-launch trailer or knew the meaning of his name prior to having played it...

I've hear that we are supposed to prononce it : Tie - Dah
But as a French Canadien i'm prononcing it Tie-duse
We all have our way to say it, I don't think that there's a real bad way to prononce it.

Peter1986

I pronounce it "Tee-dus", because that's how most Swedish people would instinctively pronounce it.
I am aware however that English-speaking people love the pronunciation "Tie-dus".

Sometimes I will use the Japanese name Tida as well ("Tee-dah", more or less, I guess), especially when I play the Japanese version.

"Tie-dus". I mean I get that "Tee-dus" is the proper Romanization, but new name changes aren't news.

Butz sounds like butt. Teedus sounds like teet. This must be stopped!

Teedus is not the proper Romanization. Romanization would mean you write it like that which is not the case. He is shown as "Tidus" even in Japan. It is just that the pronunciation is different.

His VA pronounces it "Teedus" (as in tedious) - or did in the bonus stuff with the game anyway.
It'll always by TIDEus to me though. Sea/surfer theme and all that.

The proper pronunciation is "new guy" Auron was very clear about this. You may also shorten it to "him", but that's only for close friends and family.

Blitz players... what ya gonna do, eh?

It's pronounced "tedious". Or "this whiny new guy whose name even his girlfriend can't remember".

This (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FyV5UrwROvU) is how the voice actor pronounces it, though, starting from 2:20.

I may be experiencing a Mandela Effect, but I swear the last time this topic came up someone pointed out that Square Enix changed how they pronounced his name in later Kingdom Hearts games, and it was only spoken as Teedus in the first game, so it made all the arguing moot. But I haven't played any Kingdom Hearts past the first one so all I have is a memory of this discussion and no proof to base the claim on

It is not that Square Enix changed it. Selphie just mispronounced it. In Dissidia and the Audio Drama they call him Teedus again.

When the game first came out and I played through it, I always said "Tie-dus" but more quickly. Having watched trailers and interviews of voice actors, I've come to know that it's "Tee-dus", but the way I had always pronounced it always sounded cooler to me so I've stuck with it when saying his name.
