My OCD is getting the better of me again...

Recently beat FF9.

But, during a battle outside Esto Gaza, some enemies did an earth move on me which slowed down the game. Even the music slowed down. This lasted for a couple of seconds.

I may (although not certain) have pushed a command button during this slow-down period. Would this have made me enter my command sooner than is allowed?

Did I cheat?

Have I still beat the game properly?

I wouldn't call it cheating. IX seriously pushed the PS1 so it has a lot of slow down for it and if you're playing in Active mode where you can input commands during turn, then there is no problem. At worst you found a glitch, but I still wouldn't call it cheating unless it was exploitable and gave you an unfair advantage but nothing you said sounds like either.

That's the thing, I don't know if it gave me an unfair advantage. As in, I'm unsure whether the slow-down allowed me to put in my command sooner than I was allowed to

Obviously the enemy is doing its turn, so no, you didn't cheat. You might have inputted your turn sooner, but it's actually more likely you put in your turn later, so the computer technically cheated thanks to a graphics hiccup. Still, I wouldn't consider any of this cheating and more of a glitch. Cheating in RPGs, at least for me, involves more serious intention on the players part like using codes to get max levels/items and such.

I've just tested out the glitch by trying to repeat it, and I think it did repeat.

It was a Mistodon outside Esto Gaza, and the attack was "Mist".

Does this attack slow down the game for anyone else?

(It didn't do it every time I tested it, but it did a couple of times...)

(Playing on PS3 through Ps store)

Here is a similar example I found on youtube:

if you think you're cheating when a game gets some fps drops, i don't think you can play any game ever again.

You absolutely did not cheat in any way. There was no exploitation or unfair advantage gained.
What will you be playing next?

Slowdown on ffix is like superglueing a snail to ground

Did you intend to take advantage of the system? Did you actually intend to manipulate or change the way the game works? And, if there was slowdown, do you think that it actually adversely affected the game? Do you think that a frame or two difference in when an input was accepted not only changed the outcome, but did so in a way that was not seen or intended by the developers?

And, just because something isn't intended, doesn't mean it was wrong.

Do you know what the first video game to have a difficult curve was? It was Space Invaders. The more enemies you shot down, the less there was to process, and the faster the aliens moved. And, therefore, the harder the game got. It wasn't intended. It wasn't supposed to work that way. But rendering that many sprites caused the game to chug.

That's right, slowdown was a thing way back in 1978. And you know what? It is universally agreed that the slowdown and the progressive speed increases as you shot down each enemy made the game better.

Okay, this made me happy. With how depressed my mood has been today, that is no small feat. So thank you.

I reckon you should play it again just to make sure.

I'm joking. You definitely did not cheat!

I may be wrong, but I think this may have happened to me too, back in the day. I can picture the battle music and the game going slower at times, so I think this happened every now and again.

Literally every console game has slowdowns here and there.
