An eight year in development ROM Hack of Pokemon Gold was canceled today by a cease and desist notice from Nintendo.
One of the devs posted a tweet (https://twitter.com/Koolboyman/status/811456505727717376) earlier telling fans about the news. The project was planned to release next week. As Pokemon fans know, there are many other ROM hacks out there that were never shut down by Nintendo, but considering Prism had a YouTube trailer with over 1 million views, a Polygon article, and Twitch streams it was looking like for a while that this was going to happen.

He shouldn't have called it "pokemon", or included pokemans from earlier games.

Calling it "Prism" and writing "a conversion mod for pokemon" below it would have avoided trademark issues.

Probably just not advertising it at all would've prevented it. There are dozens of others out there, but it doesn't matter now really because the game got leaked the same day I wrote this.

What do these hacked versions do differently than the main games?

This one was a total conversion mod, changing it into an entirely different game (if you ignore that even official pokemon games are 90% identical within the same console generation), but reusing the assets found in the game already.

In some they allow all pokemon catchable in the game requiring no trading, altered AI to make the game harder, etc. This one includes updated sprites over 280 pokemon, 20 gyms, mechanics from generation 4, character customization, and more.
