View Full Version : Having a graphics problem playing FF8 on steam

Hey. I'm currently playing FF8 on steam and even though the characters are in rendored in HD, the pre-renderedd backgrounds are pixelated instead of what it should look like here (https://youtu.be/5uOKgOMPzD4?t=8m5s). It's beginning to look off-putting. :(

My current PC has more than enough specs for this to run perfectly. I tried options in-game but I've never used steam before this so it could be something simple that I'm missing.

If anyone knows a suggestion it'll be much appreciated. Thanks.

I've moved this out of the Private Feedback Forum for you. x}

Pixelated how? Are they simply not interpolated?

The video you linked has "HD Mod" in the title. Are you using any HD mods?

Thanks Shauna I wasn't sure.

@Mirage - I'm not using any. I didn't even notice that in the title!

I mean like the image should look something like the left and yet it looks like the right in the example below. Lousy example but hopefully you understand.

What are HD mods, and could it make the backgrounds smoother? Should be noted that when I enter battle the backgrounds are perfect again.

In battle, the backgrounds are a texture on a 3d plane, and is treated like all textures are, with some sort of filtering, usually bicubric. Outside of battle, the backgrounds are bitmaps, not textures, and are treated as such. It's just the steam port that is lousy from SE's side.

Mod is short for modification. HD is an abbreviation for high definition. A HD mod is a high-definition modification for the game. Presumably, this guy used a mod that replaced the background bitmaps with versions that have been upscaled with a reasonably good filter.

Mods are usually third-party additions to games, and a lot of games do not not officially support modding, which makes installing them a bit technical.

Thanks for the info. It sucks but what can you do I suppose. Here's hoping the console release expected to come this year will look better.

There are things you can do.
