View Full Version : Xenoblade Chronicles 2
I'm torn

On one hand, my favorite game of all time is getting another follow-up, and it looks like this time it's an actual sequel that's in many ways more similar to it than to X. Takahashi's still involved, so it should be good
BUT
THAT ARTSTYLE
IT'S JUST SO OFFPUTTING! WHY DID YOU DO THIIIIIISSSSS :crying:

Generic anime cutesy art style. That's a downgrade.
Yeah. Did Monolith just assume that while playing the original my thoughts were "This game is amazing, but you know what would make it even better? GENERIC MOE BLOBS INSTEAD OF ACTUAL CHARACTERS!"
Just watch. It'll turn out that your main character is the only male party member and you'll have to pick one female character to have intercourse with by scoring points throughout the game :roll2
Yaaaay, proper Xenoblade Chronicles again! It's Reyn Time!
I mean, after FFXV I don't really get excited for things any more, but this is as close as I allow myself to get. The protagonist has a VOICE and says WORDS after XCX I thought those days were behind us! Nice to see some of the old music team return as well - although no Shimomura for obvious reasons. Now I just hope that the game mechanics follow suit and they drop 60% of the rubbish from X.
Art style doesn't bother me (except protag's weird pant boot armour things. Reminds me too much of Fayt from SO3 and they were weird in that as well), although the character designs in the original did look somewhat more unique. The environment is spot on and wonderful as ever though.

Yeah I'm not a huge fan of the new designs. They all look 12. But they don't look porn game to me either
Wow. I assumed you'd like the art style, actually, since it reminded me of the Tales series
I quite like "Red-head Asuka Langley". But "Fayt from SO3 with a diving helmet on his back" does nothing for me.
I have no opinion on blonde girl by the tree.

Yeah the pant boots are weird, but otherwise it doesn't bother me. We got sort of burned by Xenoblade Chronicles X so I am approaching this with cautious optimism.

It's a typical new Nintendo style. They went that way since the Wii and I think if this is a big realse for the Switch as they are looking to bring people back to Nintendo, and they had their say in the art. Just my thought.

But the original Xenoblade was on the Wii. And it looked like this.

Notice how the characters don't look twelve, have the same face or boobs the size of their heads.
Idk, I don't think there's a "typical Nintendo style" they're going for. If anything, it reminds me of those weird otaku games that come shipped with panties. And that's just incredibly creepy and I really can't get that association out of my head.

It's anime styled. Plenty of games have it, that are not what you describe. I have shelves of games with cutesy anime style, and not one was shipped with pants. Not even in Japan. You need to get your mind out of the gutter I think. ;)
But it hurra, Shauna :crying:

I know it hurts to take yourself away from your own deviancy, but you've got to try. For your own sake.

Ehh~~
But onii-chan, lots of wonderful games have this kind of art style and put it to good use! Did you never play Valkyria Chronicles?

why is valkyria chronicles brought up? that game's style isn't similar to XC2 either.
You do realize these things are completely subjective, right?

You could spend all day debating whether [x] is closely related to [y] or [z]. What's important is that it is pretty different.
I'm not sure how common it is for video game sequels to drastically change the art style. Zelda pulled it off by having it occupy another timeline altogether with Toon Link, but I can't think of any other examples off the top of my head. I wonder why they decided to change it? It's not as if the original art style was ugly.

trying to appeal to a different consumer group, maybe? because obviously no one likes a good jrpg except 12 year olds.
wouldn't surprise me if Nintendo honestly thinks this is true, despite the average gamer age, even for jrpgs, is way past 20.
Watch the game get like a 7+ age rating and have no objectionable themes.

Probably just the result of a different character designer.
I'd be surprised if X2 ends up being set in the same world/timeline as the original, judging from the trailer. I expect they'll do a Final Fantasy thing where they share themes but tell a completely different story in a new world.
It's still directed by Takahashi's. So I highly doubt it.
*response to Mirage, btw

maybe it was a corporate decision
anyway, i feel pretty sure that this is a direct sequel. Possibly even the same world.
Yeah. Otherwise, why even call it a 2?

Watch it have this cutesy art style and deal with heavier themes than the original Xenogears.

Oh god... that's a terrifying thought. The memories from the last time this happened haven't gone away.

To be fair, I don't like the style of the original Xenoblade either. Their faces are weirdly flat and Sharla looks like she has a dislocated pelvis her thighs are so far apart

I like the concept art designs for them, but ingame they are a bit weird. i put some of that down to the graphical capabilities of the Wii, but not all of them. Fiora's later appearance is pretty bleh too.

Except it looked less like that, and more like this:

Which still looks better than the moe moe desu style we have here
