Some interesting reveals were made at the live Nintendo Switch presentation last night and Square Enix had a few reveals during the event, but one new IP reared its head. That game was Project Octopath Traveler. This is a new game from the Bravely Default team with classic 2D sprites in gorgeous modern technology and turn-based combat. The title is a work in progress at the moment and not much was shown off in its thirty-second trailer, but what was shown does insight interest. The game will be a Switch exclusive, but no release date was given. You can check out the trailer below:

I quite dig the art style and camera perspective, but hope it won't all be on a 2d plane.

...

That's about all I can say with the information available.

Can't say I feel particularly strongly about this in any form right now.

When SE goes retro, good things tend to happen. This looks hopeful but we haven't seen nearly enough so far!

That's about all I can say with the information available. This, except I wouldn't be opposed to it being on a 2D plane.

Square Enix being invested in making games on the Switch has me all emotional right now.

The name right? I know it's a working title, but still.

Ah! You just reminded me - this is a game with sprites. Show it to Carny to let him know what sprite is :p

He knows what sprites are! But yes, a game so retro? Not a game for him, I suspect. Talking about the art style and visualisation, I'm really liking the use of shadow in this game. When that guy uses a fire spell against that monster, notice how the shadows are illuminated against the background. It kinda reminds me as if they're on stage, in some theatre or something. For a sprite-based game, it's visually arresting. I've always liked a classic fantasy adventure. Thirty seconds is nothing though, so who knows, when more details come through I might change my mind!

That narrator is really hamming it up, isn't he?

Not sure how I feel about it being a Switch exclusive, though.

I like the look of it, and I have a pretty good feeling about it. I really like the style and don't really care if it will be on a 2D plane or not.

For some reason I want to keep calling this game Project Octomom.

As someone always interested in the SaGa series, but turned away from Frontier due to a general lack of polish, I'm pretty excited for this.

A version of the Bravely Default BP mechanics, multiple stories, unique character actions. This all sounds great. As long as the writing is up to snuff, this will be right in my wheelhouse.

It looks cool. I'm going to have to try out the demo if I have time after work.
