Hello friends! Following the lovely fun in Karifean's Mafia game a lot of people wanted another one. Like, right away. If you don't know what mafia is, it's a fun forum game. Check out this to explain it: http://mikeburnfire.deviantart.com/art/Mafia-Tutorial-31409818

I am looking for seven people to play, it will be an open set up:

1 Mafia Goon
1 Mafia Roleblocker
1 Sane Cop
1 Doctor
3 Townies

We will use alt accounts and there will be a theme. I have three in mind! Please score them in order of your preference when you sign up!

I think it might actually be best if Mafia got a sub-forum.

And there could possibly be a sign-up list for people wanting to host bigger games.

I don't like having to use secondary accounts. Having to switch between my real account and game account in 2 separate windows is tedious and annoying.

It's also incredibly stupid that you HAVE to include a deletion message in order to have a post deleted. I clicked the "delete message" button immediately after I posted with my real account, and it didn't delete the post until I tried it again with a message included.

Really stupid.

Fynn

Regular peeps can't see the message anyway. The message is for us staff :)

That's not really fair. You could easily hop onto your staff account and see any accidentally deleted messages in-game, thus giving you a huge advantage and more information than a regular user would have access to.

I like not imposing a time limit at the start and just seeing how it goes.Yeah. I'm in favour of variable day lengths. My plan for this game is to let it flow if people are getting into it and there's a good discussion happening, but then if it seems to have dried up I'll start putting some deadlines up. It'd be great if everyone was online at once as then a short day would be perfect.

Scruffington

I like not imposing a time limit at the start and just seeing how it goes.

There's definitely a few directions you can go in when it comes to time limits.

In Town of Salem when a player reaches a majority of the votes, they are put on trial and all of the players must vote "Guilty" or "Innocent" after they have a period of time to defend themselves.

That's a concept I would love to see here but it would be really hard to implement on a forum.

Most of the time the Day Phase just lasts 24-48 hours and ends when the time is up regardless of the votes.

Them pesky time zones!

Funnily enough, a 'Town of Salem' style concept is what I'd do for an Ace Attorney themed game, with a trial period.

I think it could work. Just have to sort out the details.

I could see it working if a player gets put on trial after reaching a majority of votes. Then they would have one post to defend themselves. After this post, the remaining players have a period of time to deliberate and submit their votes.

There do need to be time limits on the post and the votes. Maybe an hour or two to submit a post, and another hour or two to vote/discuss the defense.

I don't want to discuss much outside of the game thread (especially as I'm still playing), but I agree: what happens in the night will definitely affect conversation. Everyone likes a good murder to discuss. Who is killed will undoubtedly affect things as well.

I think I cracked this Mafia case. Thinking about it the only night action that needs to happen is a kill. If the doctor doesn't decide to save someone or investigators chose not to investigate it wouldn't hold the game up. They may chose not to to hold their identity a secret. Won't say who my character is as I do not wish to be their next or current target as their is time before the randomness happens, but if my thoughts are true I know either both Mafia's, or I am way off.

Formalhaut
01-14-2017, 06:10 PM
My knowledge of night actions isn't the best seeing how I haven't played as one since forever, but you can choose to just, not, perform your action? So a Doctor can choose not to protect, a Detective to not investigate. By that logic, does a kill even have to happen? Not sure why they wouldn't happen, but who knows.

Karifean
01-14-2017, 06:12 PM
Even if an action doesn't need to happen, I'd assume you still have to PM Psychotic with the information that you don't use your action. I doubt he'd randomly cut the night short and take away anyone's right to use their night ability if they just happened to not be around in time.

I think we need more rigid and clearly defined time limits. At the moment some players aren't active and those who are don't want to make any guesses or vote to lynch someone because they have no information and the only thing any action does is make them look suspicious. I want to go to bed shortly but I dunno if the phase will still be going when I wake up, so I'll probably just cast a random vote and hope that it doesn't bite me while I'm sleeping.

I really don't think it's cool that a host decides to implement or enforce rules on a whim.

Day Phase 1 came to an end after the host randomly felt like setting a time limit of 12 hours after previously stating that there was no real limit. I was only given less than 8 hours for Night Phase 1 (of which there was no indication how long it would last), and now Day 2 has a time limit of 24 hours.

I also got booted from the game without any forewarning. This game has absolutely no consistency.

I did PM you about this but perhaps you haven't seen it.

I thought I had made it clear that I was looking to host a short, weekend game, and I've also made it clear that time limits would be variable depending on the flow of the game. If I hadn't made that clear and you didn't know what you were signing up for, I am sorry.

Before I replaced you, I was watching you because I was desperate for you to participate. I had watched out for you all day and had even checked your post history to see when you'd be likely to be online. You were online, viewed the threads several times, but did not post. After several hours of that and having publicly mentioned I was considering replacements, I made the call.

If you didn't have time or were busy, that's cool. Mafia doesn't run anyone's life. But if someone is absent for a prolonged period it doesn't fit into quick intense experience I am going for either. In a longer game with more players I'd have just let it slide but in a short, small game like this, we can't really afford absences or long delays. I have a responsibility to all of the other players who have committed their time and energy - I don't want it to be ruined for them.

I apologised for this in the PM I sent you but I'm more than happy to do this again. I'm sorry that the experience didn't match your expectations and that it's sucked for you. I hope there are no hard feelings.

The sign-up thread had no indication that it was a "weekend" or "short" game. It was only shown to be a smaller game since there was a 7 player limit.

I was actually the one driving -- or attempting to drive -- the discussion in Day 1. Most players were inactive ASIDE from me, but I still attempted to create conversation as best as I could. I decided to go to bed really late before the Day Phase ended since no one else was posting, and as it turns out, the Night Phase both started and ended before I even woke up. I never actually checked the Mafia thread until I had already been kicked.

To you, a "long absence" was literally 5 hours of not posting. This is despite the fact that several other players were "absent" for far longer than I was during the first day.

I don't have anything against you, haha. Or anyone for that matter. Mafia is just a game and it's intended to be a fun/thought provoking experience for everyone. I'm just kind of annoyed at the lack of information regarding rules, inconsistency, and seeming double-standard of "absence."

Well played, Mafia. But god damn. Quina didn't particularly set off many red flags. I laid out all my thinking. I'm trying to figure out where I went wrong.

I think the theatrics with Karifean made it all possible. Before he claimed cop, things looked to be turning against both of us slightly. So when he decided to claim cop and out me as Mafia, I had an opportunity to get onto your good side. By killing off the fake cop who proved to be Mafia, that should have put me quite low on the suspect list. After he accused me, either people would believe him and I would die (in which case Eiko looks like the fake cop), or people wouldn't and he would die (in which case I look super innocent).

It seemed obvious that one of us was likely to die anyway, so we tried to make the most of it.

Your other mistake was just luck of the draw; you had already said you were suspicious of Steiner. I figured you were likely to investigate either him because of those suspicions, or me because you'd tried to investigate me before but been blocked. If you chose me it was game over, as you were basically confirmed the true cop, or if you'd investigated Vivi, killing Steiner would have been in vain. But I got lucky!

Yeah you really were unlucky! I take some of the credit for day 2 because I was playing the probabilities, but day 1 the roleblock was completely random. And it just so happened that it prevented you, the person who was key to the major events of day 2, discovering that I was mafia there and then.

The other thing that pushed it to Vivi was his post about Scruffy's night action. Very good game!

Day 1 is a crapshoot? Look at how the entire mafia had to vote for Beatrix as they were already being pushed into losing one of their members! I do think Fynn's comments afterwards were funny too, about how the town was to blame and he wanted the mafia to win - The mafia are the ones who voted for you! :p Either way, when the Mafia are already on the defensive it makes for an interesting game.

Night 1 was a lot of fun. As soon as Eiko's night action to investigate Quina came in I was like... welp gg mafia. But then they managed to roleblock her! I have no idea how they got that one right but damn. The killing of Kuja was good too. The idea was clearly someone who was on the fringes and not have any protection, and to confuse the town. And it worked, the town spent a lot of time going in circles about it. My advice to town will always be to analyse votes and who said what rather than why anyone was killed in the early game. Oh, and in case anyone cares, the Steiner protection was a dice roll and landed on, coincidentally, Eiko.

Day 2 was insane. I suspect it backfired somewhat on the mafia. They can correct me if I'm wrong but I'm assuming the idea was to have Zidane confirmed as cop going into the last night, the actual cop roleclaim (and then, with their identity revealed, roleblocked) and then on the final day, the cop can't claim any results, mafia "cop" claims the real cop was investigated as guilty and it's an easy win. Didn't quite work out that way, did it! The mafia lost the roleblocker and confirmed the real cop in the process. Oops! Great work by the town in ruining the best laid plans and seeing through the ruse.

Night 2 I knew the only smart play Quina could make was to kill Steiner so I was pleased when the PM came in. With the Doctor still in play, Eiko would obviously be protected. But then that would leave the little problem of Eiko's night result to deal with. Eiko had been suspicious of Steiner as Zidane's scumbuddy and was the most likely subject of investigation. So killing Steiner and going into the final day with Vivi as the opponent was the best move Quina could've made.

Thank you all so much for playing and providing such good entertainment!

I loved your write-ups Psychotic, particularly the last one. Evil Quina stabbing someone with her frog fork was a hilarious image. My only question is, did Quina then eat Eiko?!

I say the game is not simply to win... but to kill one of our own, confirm the real cop and still win.

Once again I really enjoyed playing. The quick night was great as that's when we over think and can't get our ideas out there for all to hear.

I only wish I'd had a bit more of a chance to play! A lot of the action of the first day went on after I'd gone to bed, and of course I died on the first night. Maybe next time I'll be able to hang in there a bit longer.

It didn't so much backfire as much as it went the more complicated route. I tried to set things up so that regardless of if I will be believed or killed, we could still win.

If I had been believed, my investigation would have been "proven to be true", putting massive shade on the real cop who couldn't possibly have remained hidden given the fact the Mafia would win if a townie was lynched. I then pretend to have been roleblocked myself during the night (since it would be obvious that the roleblocker was still in play), kill off one of the non-real-cops and then lynch the real cop on the last day.

But even with me not being believed, as you probably noticed I tried my hardest to make it appear like Quina and I were on opposite teams. I'd been voicing suspicion of Quina since the beginning of the game and especially on the second day when the Mafia would've won with another townie lynch I still picked on Quina. I didn't expect people to actually still be suspicious of Quina being my co-conspirator after that tbh. ^^; Of course it would've all died if Fox hadn't killed Eiko's investigation target that night, but thankfully that went well.

All in all it wasn't so much a huge risk as much as it was trying to lure the townies into believing the live Mafia is a trustworthy player regardless of who it ends up being. I could've also tried getting a townie to get lynched, but eh, I figured doing what I did would make the game more interesting and memorable. And it totally did =P

A pretty close game that came down to the wire. Good job mafia! Some smart kills in particular.

I think the town's biggest mistake in the end was for Steiner to protect Eiko. I think the kill was predictable to not be Eiko due to the existence of protection so the doc had a 33% chance to block the real kill by switching it up.

You can't protect yourself as doc though can you? If so then it couldn't have made any difference as I targeted the doc. Not deliberately, but still ^^

I thought Eiko and Quina were mafia but it was really just guesses

For me my biggest mistake was not to advocate a no lynch to allow another investigation. Atmosphere got ahead of me, what with everyone's going "the final day" and "decide now!"

I had completely forgotten no lynch was an option.

Also an option I'm pretty sure would've gotten you a quick defeat. Since it would've meant a free kill for the mafia, the number of town and mafia would've been equal afterwards.

That is a stipulation that is used sometimes but not always. I think in a small game like this I would not use it.

Hmm... good point. In that case, biggest mistake was investigating Steiner. Pretty much hinged on that, I guess.

Yup. Having your investigation be predictable was the biggest weak point. Had you investigated anyone else, you'd have won instantly. But of course from your point of view it made sense, if you believed Steiner to be the remaining Mafia ^^

In my defence, Steiner was acting pretty fishy.

Yeah you're lucky that off the bat they announced you were a sane cop too. Imagine being insane and not knowing it! You'd have thought everyone was a baddie!

In a bigger game where they have a large roster, and don't list roles, always investigate yourself =x That way you know if your future investigations will be backwards or not.

Unless the mod says you can't investigate yourself. :p Then you have to think about it more.

I think if you're going to have variable sanity then you should allow the cop to investigate themselves. Then you have the trade off as to whether it's worth sacrificing a night or not.

I was wondering if you were going to investigate me really. If you did it may have gone different, but I was sure Steiner was Mafia.
