Do you ever find yourself shirking more powerful and/or useless equipment merely because you think it's ugly?

you can't fight crime if you ain't cute

Kinda? I mean, if it is the ultimate equipment I'll wear it even if I don't like the look of it. But in the middle ranks, I will absolutely wear something if it looks good (or, if I'm playing as a woman, something that actually protects them).

Dragon Age: Origins has this problem a lot. Like, look at this:

This is one of the best rogue armors in the game. And it looks so brown. I mean, fair enough, the entire game is brown, so I guess it could pass as camouflage, but still. Oh God and the mage robes are hideous. Especially the hats.

Thank God Dragon Age: Inquisition introduced armor tinting in an earlier patch, though for some reason they neglected to include weapon tinting, in their infinite wisdom.

I personally don't mind having some armor that's less conventionally pretty, but I do hate it when they make the fanservice-y, fetishy clothing for girls more powerful armor than the rest, at least at that moment. This was the biggest problem for me in Persona 3 Portable and Dragon quest VIII, both of which had really great female characters but some of their better armor was basically just lingerie?

all the time, i care more about my characters appearance than the DPS of their weapons... i power level, so usually by the time i get new weapons, armor, or equipment, if it's fugly i won't use it, it's not like the extra dmg makes a difference when i'm one hit killing everything i encounter anyway... my leveling rule is simple; i don't leave an area until i can one hit kill everything there, then i can move on...

Guild Wars 2 did it right... they let you copy looks from other items to the ones you are wearing :o

Press releases from Dragon Age Inquisition before it came out made it sound like they did something similar. They did do something interesting with armor but not that. Either way I'd rather enjoy looking at my character while playing a game. It's no fun being protected if you look stupid and constantly worry someone is going to walk in and see your character

Since I exclusively play JRPGs I don't have this issue.

I'm sure there are probably others but Xenoblade chronicles suffered from this

I love the glamour system in XIV for this.

Like Vyk mentioned, this is no longer the rule. Xenoblade Chronicles, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Dragon Quest IX, Persona 3 FES and Portable, and many other JRPGs have appearance-changing gear

Can't think of a lot of gear in Persona 3F that did this. There were a couple of exceptions that would do it, but you typically just looked like you always did.

Yes, to the point where I wish more games would incorporate ideas like The Last Story's implementation, where you could customize various outfits by removing certain parts and changing the color scheme as you see fit.

Also, I'm a terrible Commander. Towards the end of Eden Prime I found some better armour for Ashley but... I... thought she looked better in the white outfit and didn't give it to her. I'm an awful person.

I mostly favour utility over appearance. Mostly. I'd rather it look nice, if it's at all possible. If equipment's really super-duper yuck, I won't use it.
