To me FFXII looks like the Game of Thrones of Final Fantasy. Loved the political machinations, most of the themes it tackles (war, honor, revenge, betrayal, duty and so on). Amazing world and gameplay. Great story and characters.

It goes great with French versions of classic animated films from the 90s?

This is amazing :jess:

There used to be an awesome FF XII AMV of To Be Prepared with Vayne, but don't think it's up anymore.

Complex political intrigue, layered characters, and fun gameplay are all well and good, guys, but I think we're losing track of what really matters.

Also I super LOVED the license board. Absolutely adored it

For a game so far from its roots, and so deep in the series, to have real legitimate drama, while the biggest names in the series both before and after had ridiculous plots, with unbelievable and unrelatable characters, hinged on the worst cases of melodrama in the genre, it definitely stands out in both the series, and the genre itself for its time and what it brought to the table

How can anyone say this plot isn't just as ridiculous?

Anyway, I think it's the setting up the Gambit board as unpopular as that is and how nerfed it's going to be. My favorite part of RPGs is doing everything to the point where I'm a God. I want to walk into battles and put my controller down like "Come at me, bro".

Huh, could've sworn I posted in this. Well anyway, When I think of FFXII, I think of the gameplay, the story, and the environment, in that order.

I really loved the gameplay. Yes there's a few weird quirks to it - what is the actual point of measures and hand-bombs? - but overall I really loved how you could really specialise characters. I mean sure by endgame everyone knew everything and the best combination is just spamming physicals; offensive magic does get relegated harshly in this game. But that's besides the point. For the majority of the game, the gameplay was very impressive and made me think about which licence to get for each character. Even better, the remaster will make the specialisation element a mandatory requirement, and magic will be better now that you don't have to patiently queue up for the last spell to end.

The story is understated yet deeply moving in places. I will say I wish the story could be refined and improved upon. A few characters barely get a look in. I really wanted to see more Drace, and I wish Penelo had more of an impact to the story than either kidnap victim or marriage material. But honestly, what we have is compelling in its own right and was a mature game. I liked the Star Wars-esque feel, with the 'Resistance' and the Empire, yet the mature plot also manages to fold more fantastical magic and prophecy into it, which mostly works. The Occuria were kinda just there to say 'surprise!'. But there were good plot twists, like the major plot twist at the end of the prologue that I didn't really figure out until we met Basch.

The environment was good as well. Lots of various locales. I hated The Great Crystal, which was an absolute mess to navigate, but it was definitely pretty. All the locations were, with maybe the exceptions of the Sandseas for being so long, and the Garamsythe Waterway for being another maze. Other than that they were amazing.

I'm so looking forward to FFXII: TZA though, where they can iron out just a few things and improve the gameplay even further.

My favorite part about is the political drama. That's what makes the game for me.

Atmosphere. For me the story was just okay (I kept waiting for it to pick up more and then I beat the game) and only a handful of characters thrilled me, but oh my God that atmosphere.

I can't say it's the best exploration game I ever played, but roaming around the world from the deserts of Dalmasca to the deepest depths of Henne Mines to the lost kingdom of Nabudis was an absolute blast. With a soundtrack that made each of these environments richer and a bestiary that gave a background to EVERY SINGLE MONSTER IN THE GAME.

And then there were the hunts of which each had a (side story) purpose to defeat besides just "beat a big monster."

This is why I won't get Zodiac Age. I can't. I can't pour 400+ hours into a game anymore. It's too much to do over again.

+Variety of huge, gorgeous and amazing environments to explore.
+Random loot
+Lots of secrets that reward you for exploring
+Has to be the Final Fantasy with the most content
+Great music by the Tactics composer. I really like his style. The Esper battle theme is the shiz.
+IMO great combat. Loved that the speed stat allowed characters to attack more than once in a turn (for their auto-attack). I would slap cat-ear hood and cast hate on Vaan and he'd do 9 or 10 9999 hits per "turn". They did a good job updating the ATB system. Really, the main difference between this games ATB system and other ATB games in the series before it is that it was a lot faster-paced so you had to automate at least some of it it and it got rid of repetitively selecting things in menus over and over again. Unfortunately not everyone saw it that way.
+Esper design. They were useless in battle, but I like that they went dark with the art direction here.

I think the voice acting deserves a mention to say the least. The amount of efforts they put to give voice to those characters is astonishing imo.

To be honest with you, my favorite part of Final Fantasy XII was obtaining Espers. I loved it. I loved how each had it's own conditions and hunting it and finding it was so unique. I have to admit that once I got them I did not use the earlier ones in battle as much, but the adventure to capture them all and get them to side with my party was pretty thrilling.

Attempting to get Zodiark in that final dungeon was a pain in the ass. I spent countless hours leveling up and whittling my way back there only to find no save point and die deep into the Esper battle. I did obtain it my 2nd attempt, but I broke my DualShock 2 controller in the process after my 1st defeat.

I agree, getting all the Espers was one the things I liked the most about FFXII. Ultima and Zodiark were both a pain to get, and yet the feeling of satisfaction is amazing after you collected them all.

Right now?

Either the Eruyt Village theme, or Mt. Bur-Omisace theme.

More than anything, this game has an amazing sense of discovery. Gathering the materials to brave a sandstorm and hunt a Wyrm, clearing out an area of wildlife to lure out Cluckatrice chicks, learning the different weather conditions and the way they affect locations all worked to make Ivalice feel "real".

Hell, the dungeons felt like age-old relics of a forgotten time. I loved the Tomb of Raithwall, and while the Tower of Pharos and the Great Crystal were long as sin, I felt like I was actually going through a Rite of Passage to claim powers unknown. There's a philosophy to XII's design that (to me) goes beyond a simple video game dungeon design (FFX's Cloister of Trials being an example). I felt like I was going through real temples, each with their own rules; I don't think any two dungeons shared a puzzle mechanic, and few of them were so simple as "put this key in this door to progress". Instead I had to decipher riddles and discover elements unique to each dungeon I was currently in, and that's a COOL feeling. I can forgive the game's plot being so sparse when the world is so well thought out.

It's one of my top 5 FF's but I think the character advancement, battle systems, and gambits are excellent and had the series chosen to go that route with an open leveling system that allowed you to - gasp - fuck up your characters is immensely satisfying.

How exactly could you ruin your characters?

Overcommit to a certain set of skills, using weapons that aren't very effective or too rare to always have access to, etc. It's not like old-school D&D or anything, but most FF's with open-ended character progression allow you to easily undo a lot of your mistakes (VII, VIII), or are much more streamlined (X). XII requires a certain degree of planning.

But, all you have to do to undo a mistake is pick up one more license for something more useful. It's not like you get locked out of anything by the open progression. Sure, you can take any path you want, but changing if you find yourself on a poor route is relatively easy.

Gonna have to say the music. With the world design thing being close second.
The music is awesome and very underated. Listened to a few of the remakes tracks though and they are a bit less good. But still alright. The original though has the 3rd best ff ost ever created imo so yah
