I get that it's faster to produce in some ways

Berserk is a particularly heinous example. Something like Tsuki ga Kireii looked, mostly, pretty good.

Its a technique that will get generally (Berserk notwithstanding) higher in quality the more it's used. Look at Toy Story 1 vs Moana.

I didn't realize until watching Sailor Moon Crystal Season 3 after watching the first two seasons that I absolutely despise this animation technique. Apparently I'm not alone either, as Sailor Moon's voice actress refused to do the third season unless they went back to classic 2D animated transformations. :P

I've always felt that you need to go with one or the other. 3D animation rarely melds well with 2D animation and comes out the other end looking right.
