Happy Birthday Final Fantasy!

So, I don't know whether you've heard of this series - Final Fantasy, it's a pretty niche thing - but it is turning 30 this year. So old. Join us in celebrating EoFF's namesake in its big milestone!

To kick off the celebrations, which will hopefully see various events and such running throughout the rest of the year, we are going to have a character tournament! Yes, I know, such an original idea.




A Character Tournament? I cannot contain my excitement, tell me more!
But which characters will be included in this? There are literally millions of characters to choose from!

That's where I need your input, friends! Please send in via PM to me (http://home.eyesonff.com/private.php?do=newpm&u=15366) a maximum of 10 Final Fantasy characters of your choice. Use whatever criteria you want for nominating them! Maybe you like the frill of their socks? That is fine.

The 32 characters with the most nominations will be randomly seeded, and they will each go head to head until we vote the ultimate champion! I can only hope that we see an upset like the IX vs X-2 battle we had a few years ago! What an exciting time that was!

I was worried we weren't going to hit it with characters with two nominations minimum, but now we have 40 characters with that threshold. So, trying to get the cut off of 3+ nominations now! We have 21 of those, so just 11 more characters need to be pushed over the line!

Things that surprised me during nominations:
- Cids were... not common nominations. At all. I didn't think too much of it until I finally got a Cid nomination in, really late on in the game. I would have thought we'd see more of the various Cids!
- Sephiroth only got one nomination. What the heck!
- Edward has a full name, and it is really really dumb.

I think Sephiroth suffers from oversaturation and oversimplification. He's definitely the most well known and prominent FF villain and Square love to give us him and One Winged Angel remixes at every opportunity. I like him but I'm also kind of bored of him by now.

I've seen several members here boil down his plot to "oh he's a mama's boy" or whatever and say therefore he's a bad villain, but smurf that because they're all a bit one dimensional. Above any FF villain before or since, he has presence. The closest ones to that are probably Caius and Ardyn. Maybe X-Death. And Jecht, if you count Jecht as a villain (I don't)

For the next 14 days starting from tomorrow (god help us) there will be two polls posted on the forum. I'll make a hub thread as well, for overall discussion and a place for us to track the competition as it goes on.

Vote in those polls for your favourite character of the two! Tell us why! Tell others why they are wrong (politely, of course)!

Following those 14 days, there will be 4 further days of one poll being posted - this will be the semi-finals, 3rd place and final rounds. Giving them their own days for maximum intensity.
