Golden Age of Television Recommendation

I've seen it said that we're currently in a golden age of television. We have shows that are rivaling movies in quality. We have writing that blows out everything else in the water. We're truly in a great time for TV.

That being said, here's the hypothetical question:

Joshua Coma-man has just woken up and hasn't seen TV since the 90's! The entire 2000's is gone to him! He'd like to ctach up on some of this fabled golden age television but doesn't know where to start!

What are some must-watch recommendations for Joshua?

I'd tell him to get an HBO and Netflix subscription and just explore.

Even though some shows took a nose dive in their final season, the overall experiences were pretty good.

Got to go with Game of Thrones, Westworld, Room 104 and True Blood as some of my HBO favorites.

In the Showtime camp I was a fan of Dexter and Penny Dreadful.

If I had to pick three must-sees they would be The Wire, Breaking Bad, and Fargo. Then I might realize that those are all heavy crime-dramas and tell him to go watch Peep Show to have a laugh.

First 2 seasons of The Sopranos
First 2 seasons of Arrested Development
1st and only season of Firefly
All of The Wire
All of Breaking Bad
First 6 seasons of GoT (maybe skip the 5th season except for Hardhome)
3rd and 4th season of Mad Men
All of Veep
1st season of Atlanta
1st 4 seasons of Futurama


That should just about catch the person up.

I'm torn about recommending The Walking Dead. It is simultaneously one of my favorite shows and one of the most watched shows on television, while also getting harsher reviews in recent seasons. Those reviews coming from me, as well.
