Playing this again because of course I am. Just dispatched these two cretins and found myself wondering... how the hell did they get there??

We happen upon them whilst exploring the ship here...

However, when we arrived at the Gelnika, there was no other submarine or vehicle in sight?

They were not wearing any kind of scuba gear. They were just in usual black-suited Turk garb.

Please can someone who is knowledgeable in the extended universe answer me this?

They clearly just had Underwater Materia and hitched a ride on emerald weapon.

I mean other than this, the story is flawlessIn before Fynn pipes up It's just incredibly jarring.

If someone could please offer me a decent explanation I can go back to knowing it is perfect.

Maybe they were the ones flying the plane. After all, you don't see signs of any other crew, do you?

Yes, but they were clearly there to recover the weapons and materia (developed by Shinra) needed to defeat Sephiroth. This is what they say.

Don't believe their lies. They hijacked the plane to start a new life together in Wutai where they had enjoyed a lovely vacation, but were cruelly shot down. Fearing judgment about their lifestyle from noted homophobe Cloud (Cloud x Mukki should be canon, smurf the haters) and his gang, they made up a story about recovering weapons and then when you were distracted trying to get the Hades materia, they stowed away in the torpedo chutes of your submarine.

I just figured some things were assumed to be off screen. In this case, the Invisible Turk Submarine ™

In the case of the Gelnika, the boss fight may or may not happen depending on what time of the game you visit, so maybe they just didn't factor in an extra vehicle animation. It also helps make their appearance a surprise.

Also, I want to give you a shout out for changing the color in the dialogue box from the standard blue.

I mean, I find it interesting that out of the whole mess that is the plot of disc two onwards, this is the bit you take issue with :p

Side note, the name Gelnika has always bothered me. I may be wrong, but I always thought it was meant to be a referrence to Guernica (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guernica_(Picasso)) that got lost due to FFVII's insanely bad translations, but what the hey :gator:

Guernica is a Spanish town that in 1937 was the site of Nazi Germany's first aerial bombings.

I think the Guernica translation would make sense. Both Guernica and Gelnika are associated with planes from groups that bring terror. The difference being that Gelnika is one of those planes.

This distinction doesn't bother me because I had to look it up to even know it was a thing.

I have no idea what you're talking about. The rest of disc 2 is perfect.

I figured it out. They were training their underwater swimming for blitzball to try to form a team with the Turks. The Midgar Zoloms!
