What did you think this meant?

I've come to understand it as the shape of Midgar being divided into 8 sections. It took me way too many years to figure this out. I thought it was a gibberish euphemism to call President Shinra a bad word.

Barret says rotten pizza. He is referring to the plate above the slum parts. That as a whole is one round thing and it blocks sunlight as well as is used as upper level by richer ones which throw down all their garbage and other stuff. Overall its simply a bad thing.

Yeah, they were discussing the above plate before he makes this comment. I don't think he was referring to Midgar as a whole. Just the plate where all the richer people live. Blocks out sunlight and all that.

Yeah, I meant the Midgar plate.

Looks like they used the line for the track name, too. It has a great sense of unease that is fitting for the slums, the way it builds up and then seemingly goes back to the normal beats at 1:43. It's tense.

I think the only time it confused me was the first time, and that was only because I, for some reason, went through the dialogue too fast (no idea why, I was already the kind of gamer who cares about the storyline, and would have been interested in Final Fantasy VII's storyline, having become curious about the game). I don't think it took me too long to realise he meant the plate, but I can see how it would confuse people, as it's not a normally heard of thing to have a plate covering a city, with what I think is another city on top of it? So if you miss the point of the dialogue, the "pizza" line comes out of nowhere.

I remember someone claiming their was a "cheat" to get Barrett to mention "pizza", like he would only say the line if he was given a specific name, but of course, he always says it.

Barret does not say 3929874p39z5r8o34wpz9534iztp8493 in the original. He literally uses the word for rotten. So that's that. And he uses "pizza". Also within the given context of the entire "blabla Midgar, blabla, plate that is above the slums, blabla people do not want to live above that because they love their land, even if it is not just about the money" we have a whole bulk of Midgar talk with "plate" on one side and "slums" on the other side.

Fantastic.

They changed it for the English translation. That's also that.
