People seem to have all but forgotten about this game. For some reason I never got around to playing this one, but I gathered that the reviews were decent.

According to the FF Wiki (http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Final_Fantasy_XII:_Revenant_Wings) it was originally a game unrelated to FFXII until Square decided to make it so:

Although inheriting the Final Fantasy XII title, Yokoyama downplayed its link to its PlayStation 2 predecessor, saying—"It is not accurate to call this a sequel. We want people to view it as the latest FF game. This is not FFXII-2".

It's been about 10 years since this game came out. So I was curious if anyone who played it would recommend it to a new player off the back of FFXII HD or if you otherwise have any fond memories of it.

It's basically X-2's story in Ivalice, because that's the only story Toriyama could write at the time. None of the characters resemble their previous selves in terms of character and writing, and it's all really just bad all around. The gameplay is also hilariously unbalanced.

So yeah, would not recommend.

I hated it when it first came out, but I've kind of wanted to revisit it lately since I only rented it and didn't give it much of a chance. I've seen Fynn write about it a couple of times, and that usually deters me from trying to get it though.

Watched a YouTube Lets Play of it for a couple of episodes. It's REALLY slow. Don't recommend.

The story is kind of banal and the game pulls a X-2 with the cast becoming 10x more cheerful and joking around than actually having character development. It's cute I guess, but feels really out of character from the original and not in a good way. Like X-2, the plot can't decide if it's going for light and charming or deep and serious.

The gameplay is okay, but it's obvious SE doesn't really know what it's doing with RTS style games so there is much to be desired. The end game also gets frustratingly difficult due to arbitrary difficulty spikes where the game just throws you into missions with maxed level enemy units. You do finally get to see classic summons though.

The story is meh. Not really bad, I don't think, but definitely not great. Just kind of there.

The metagame progression; gear collection, summon collection, achievements, etcetera, is all kind of cool, actually. Definitely my favorite part of the game.

The gameplay starts off decent enough, but the limited control scheme really hampers any ability to micro units, and the game winds up making some incredibly frustrating design decisions in order to make the game hard, and as a result the endgame (last 1/4 or so of the story and all of the special bonus boss stuff) are all frustration, zero fun.
