Once again, I'm going to use October to try and play some scary games. I'm currently checking out the original Silent Hill. Does anyone else want to Halloween game or play some cool horror titles or Halloween themed games this month?

Ooooh, SH was my first serious attempt at Halloween gaming and it was a real blast! Hope you have fun with it!

I have no ideas for this year yet, though, and I'm not sure if it'll even be feasible since All Saints' (which is the day off we get in Poland) is on Wednesday, so there won't be a long weekend to really sink my teeth into a game. But who knows? Last year we bought Fran Bow on a whim and that was pretty excellent.

Not really a horror game, or maybe it sort of is I guess, but playing Hellblade Senuas Sacrifice. Fantastic thus far and quite creepy at times.

Costume Quest is a fun game to play around Halloween - definitely not a horror title though. I haven't played the sequel or DLC - should get around to that.

Oh, also Bully is good for the season too because it has a Halloween section early on in the game.

If I magically find time, I was thinking of doing a fatal frame series playthrough. That will probably have to be next year though.

I have just gotten to the Dark World version of the School! I hope Harry Mason had his tetanus shots.

Man, really brings back memories. I remember feeling really uncomfortable in the school and wanting to get out of there. Then the world shift happened. And it got worse.

I psyched myself out in that god damned school in Silent Hill. Nothing that bad even happened but MY BRAIN

I mean, having that terrifying a dungeon right off the bat just made the rest of the game pretty much equally scary rather than unbearably more scary as it went along :monster:

I have SH2 I want to try but I don't know if I'm ready for that. I also have Fatal Frame 2 but that also seems pretty high on the spoop factor

I would like to play a spoopy game though on Halloween

But I also have classes the next day >:o

SH2 isn't really spooky scary.

It's more "oppressive, depressing, overwheming existential drea" kind of scary.

It's Halloween, Pumpkin!

You gotta start scare-training!

The Silent Hill titles have pretty creepy atmosphere over all, so even if the game is light on jump scares and threatening monsters, I can see how some people may feel a bit unnerved by it. As for my playthrough, the school has not really been too bad, I've already reached the point where I'm trying to run away from everything, not because of fear, but because combat is so damn annoying. Thankfully the Grey Children are pretty easy to avoid compared to those annoying flying creatures in town.

Which is the least spoopy game of these:
RE2
SH2
Fatal Frame 2

Fatal Frame 2

RE2 is more jump scare type nonsense and being chased down by a murder machine. SH2 is more disturbing than actually scary. Fatal Frame 2 is probably the scariest among the three.

Haven't played Fatal Frame 2, but SH2 wasn't really scary so much as sort of depressing. WK is right that Resi 2 is all about the jump scares, but I think it does the jump scares well and a lot better than most modern games with them fwiw.

Got a lot done tonight, I'm currently traversing the sewers to reach the resort side of the town. Hospital was less creepy than I thought it would be but I'll be damned if those motherfucking parasite nurses soak up way more damage than they deserve to.

So you're pretty much almost done. Wonder what ending you'll get.

We'll see, I'm well aware of how to get the best ending and I've already picked up the two easiest to miss items for it.

We actually got one of the worst endings for 1, but we actually thought it was pretty cool. Though I really prefer 2's approach of there being a number of endings that aren't easily categorized into good or bad, they're just alternate paths.

UFO ending for life.

For my Halloween gaming I'm playing Binding of Isaac. Which isn't really a horror game per se but god knows it's one of the more fucked up games I've played. I finally beat Mom's Heart for the first time ever last night. My Undertale bullet hell skills came in handy!

Done and done, Silent Hill is complete. Figured I probably wouldn't have a chance to play it for a long time afterwards so I just used a guide for the Good+ ending, though I probably would have gotten one of the two where Cybil dies had I not. Now should I continue the Silent Hill love with Silent Hill 3, restart Fatal Frame, or should I give my Steam account some love and finally play Amnesia: the Dark Descent?

If you've never played amnesia then play amnesia.

I say Silent Hill 3!

Since getting days off work from my passing out adventure, I’ve been playing symphony of the night for my Halloween gaming fun. It’s been a ton of fun.

Closest thing to horror I ever played was Dead Rising, but it's a blast. For a while i played Costume Quest each year and I have the sequel, but for some reason battles lag on my computer. Since it relies so heavily on timed hits that's kind of very bad.

I usually liked to play games that had traditionally spooky parts in them. Big Boo's Haunt, Mad Monster Mansion, Pumpkin Zone (Mario Land 2), Pokémon Tower.

I decided that beating SH1 may have been one of the things keeping me from doing SH3, so I started it back up tonight and finally got out of that damn mall and am currently lost in a subway before I got ran over by the train I thought I missed. Good times.

There is a chance my console time will be cut short later this month so if that happens, I plan on starting up Amnesia, and who knows, maybe I'll finish Half-Life finally as well.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent is always good for a Halloween play!

So true! I remember playing it at night with the lights off, in the jail place underneath the lake, that creeped me the smurf out.

Wait, you've never played through SH3 before? That would have made my recommendation a bit harder.

I've never finished it, I started it last year for my Halloween gaming and never even reached the first boss before getting sidetracked. Same thing with Fatal Frame. In the case of Fatal Frame, I ended up getting distracted by getting MGSV. For SH3, I got my PS4 and was playing through I am Setsuna before FFXV took out the rest of the year.

I'm currently in a position where nothing interesting is coming out until next year (Secret of Mana remake) so I have time to dedicate to my backlog. With my PS2 hooked back up and my PSP dedicated to Persona 1 and Tactics Ogre, I did have to drop Blood Omen for the moment.

I have come to the conclusion that SH3 really doesn't like me. I grabbed the shotgun and ended up getting killed by this games numerous instant death traps. I called it quits after that, when I came back, I forgot about the whole "dying" thing and completed the stage as normal until I realized my mistake and inability to backtrack. Since I never make secondary saves, this meant replaying the mall section for the fourth bloody time.

Also, for a game with "Silent Hill" in the title you don't spend a whole lot of time there. It's kind of ridiculous the whole silly path Heather has to take to get home and I'm really chuckling with the moments the devs reveal their true country of origin with some very Japanese cultural things popping up in what is suppose to be 'Merica.

What instances do you mean? I think I missed those, actually! Then again, I don't live in the US, so maybe that's why

Three biggest I can think of:

Even if she had weapons training, seeing a gun lying on the floor should have elicited more of a response than mild curiosity. I know we're the gun capital of the world, but it does not mean that average people are not a bit frightened by seeing a gun in real life even if it's unloaded.

While I will give them props for realizing that cell phones didn't really hit it big over here until a few years later from the game's release and thus it makes sense for Heather to call home by payphone, as usual, they assume our mass transit system is as developed as Japan's. It is very unlikely a subway system would run through a mall over here, let alone that a city would even have one. As a seventeen year old girl before the age of cellphones, Heather would likely be driving with her licenses or would have been driven to the mall by Harry. In the odd possibility she didn't have her license or car, she would have likely taken a bus. We're a very car-centric nation so public transit is still sparse throughout most of the country outside of major cities like Chicago and New York City.

Having a ritzy restaurant on the top floor of the mall would be unheard of over here. While malls do have various food and restaurants attached to them, they tend to be on the first level and have their own entrances so that they can remain open when the mall closes. Having one higher up is more common in Japan's department stores whereas a mall over here would likely not have such a ritzy looking place attached to them, let alone on the third floor which would restrict the business to the mall hours which is terrible for the service industry. There are exceptions of course, but again, you will likely find them in major metropolitan areas which Heather's hometown doesn't quite strike me as being one.

Anyone who doesn't know yet what they want to play this Halloween, I strongly recommend Doki Doki Literature Club (http://ddlc.moe/). It's free, it's pretty short, and you won't regret reading it. I would say more, but really, the less you know about it going into it, the better. You can get it either on the site I linked, or directly on Steam.

Enjoy~

I picked up Crypt of the NecroDancer in the Steam Halloween sale and I think I'm in love. Who knew that a roguelike horror dancing adventure could be so smurfing good?

Necrodancer is great.

Pity I am just garbage at these sorts of games. xD
