For many people, discord is the the alternative. It replaced the old, dated chat boxes. It seems to be working just fine.

For real, if you want a modern alternative to IRC that's self-hosted, check out Riot:

It's self-hostable, uses a new communication protocol on the back-end that's similar to IRC (though more robust), and has all the features you'd want from a Discord/Slack/etc. host.

When did the old chat room go? Wasn't a member hosting us for a while?

I dunno - it can't have been more than a year though since we to the Discord life. And Yeah, Aexoden was hosting the IRC server. Still is, as far as I am aware.

But at this point I don't think we're looking for a Discord alternative.
